While reading this book, it fell into the most beautiful pool in Turks and Caicos. I wasn‘t certain at that point I even liked this book, as it seemed to ramble. I‘m glad I rescued it and finished it post drying. I do love her writing and these characters will live within me for a long time. Choices. And, timing is everything. 5🌟

I‘ve been working on this chunkster for a few weeks. It traveled to Turks and Caicos and was dropped in the pool. It‘s finally dry, so tomorrow I hope to finish it. Her writing is so good, and she‘s likely misunderstood by many. The characters in this book...brilliantly written.

Reagan I‘ve been a fan of her writing for a while. We Need to Talk About Kevin is outstanding. 5y
Amiable I loved this book 5y
MrsMalaprop As far as Lionel Shriver goes, for me this was just an ok read. We Need to Talk About Kevin remains one of my all time favourite books @Reagan-reads 👍. 5y
Ruthiella This is the only book I have read by Shriver but I loved it! 😍 5y
Gayan I absolutely love this book. I still think about it sometime even though it‘s been years since I read it. 5y

I think this book needs a backlist bump.

If you like:
✅ Stories about the road not taken
✅ Character-driven books that focus on psychological makeup and explore big ideas
✅ The movie, Sliding Doors
✅ The dichotomy of stability vs. sparks in relationships
✅ Thinking about choice vs. chance

This would also make a great book club or buddy read pick.

MicheleinPhilly I read at least half of this years ago and then put it down for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♀️I know I was enjoying it. 5y
LauraBeth @micheleinphilly I think this book has passed the 10-year mark in age. Still good! 5y
jmtrivera This was a great ad for this book. I'm in. 😄 5y

cathipink I love Lionel Shriver. I know she's not for everyone, but I loved this book and Kevin. 5y
LauraBeth @cathipink I think her writing is so intelligent that she can be mis-understood by some readers. People seem to miss the brilliant depths sometimes. I love that she tries to get readers to wade out of the shallow waters. 5y
Suet624 I may have asked you this before, but have you read So Much For That by Shriver. It‘s genius. She is so good at her job. 😀 5y

Told in alternating, parallel-universe chapters that detail the main character‘s life (lives) after a decision point: Should she give in to the urge to kiss a friend at his birthday party – or not? From there, each chapter is split into two parts: what happens in her life if she gives in to temptation and kisses him, and what happens if she doesn‘t. I really liked this book—the writing is clever, intelligent, and witty.

cassareada This seemed very interesting. I'll have to read this one. 5y

I wanted to finish my book tonight but the DA on the Chris Watts case released almost 2k pages of documents from the investigation and I have spent hours reading them. 😖😬 Why do I do this to myself?! I am trying to wrap my head around how such a “normal” guy could be such a #psychopath.

Time to put my phone down and read ffs.

#nofemmeber

Billypar I don't know this one, but it's so hard to wrap your mind around how any of these horrific cases between couples in relationships really happen 😔 5y
Loric I don‘t get it at all! It‘s not hard to walk away. People it every day sadly. It‘s mind boggling to me that people do this... 5y
Jinjer Did the other woman know he was plotting to kill his family to be with her I wonder? If so she needs to be in prison too. 5y

Reviewsbylola Right, and how did he not think he would be caught?! That‘s what really blows me away. @loric I mean, besides the obvious issue of smothering your two young kids. 😟 5y
Reviewsbylola No, but she did know he was married. She claims that she was not the catalyst in this and that Shanann and Chris‘s financial problems were likely what drove him to this but someone on the case (DA maybe) said he thinks she is mistaken and I agree. She didn‘t even know Shanann was pregnant until after she disappeared. To the mistress‘s credit though, she did go to authorities as soon as she knew they were missing. @Jinjer 5y
AmyG This is why I am fascinated by true crime. What drives people to commit a crime like this? 5y
Reviewsbylola Same! His parents implored him at his sentencing to finally give everyone peace and tell what happened that night but I doubt he ever will. And his mom‘s a real piece of work but it seems she now realizes he‘s responsible for this. @amyg 5y
Leftcoastzen How does it happen that you make a mess of your life and decide this horrible act is the way out? If you don‘t know about the Robert Fisher case in Az.a similar horrible situation but he is still at large. 5y
Reviewsbylola I do not know of that case so thanks for giving me another avenue to suck all my time away from me. 🤣🤣 I will definitely look it up. And I agree, I just look at my kids and can‘t even imagine doing what Chris Watts did. It‘s unfathomable. @Leftcoastzen 5y
Cinfhen These are the hardest crimes for me, when it‘s a spouse/parent committing acts against the people you are meant to cherish & protect 😭😭😭😭 5y
Kaye I haven‘t read up much on the case. Yesterday when I took a walk I was listening to a podcast on Neil Entwistle who killed his wife and baby girl. When he was interviewed by phone , they recorded that on the show. I couldn‘t believe how calmly he “ explained “ it . Definitely odd with these guys. I‘m wondering if their wives saw signs of odd behavior or abuse that they never told anyone about. Hard to believe they wouldn‘t show signs ahead. 5y
Bklover Well, I saw this last night and immediately got online to check it out. I have now gone through almost 1400 pages of this! I have been reading it all day! It‘s 3:30 in the afternoon and I‘m still in my pj‘s. The only thing I can hope for is that all this reading counts towards my 24b4Monday. What do you think @TheReadingMermaid !? I have 5 hours and 42 minutes!!!!! 5y
BeansPage @Bklover fantastic start!!!! 5y
Reviewsbylola THANK GOD I‘m not the only one with a problem. 😂 I‘m only on page 1105 but I‘ve been reading it off and on all day. It‘s making me rage. @Bklover I still can‘t fathom that not only did he kill them (and jfc poor Bella fighting for her life) but then shoved their little bodies in those oil tanks. 5y
Reviewsbylola At this point I think he had it planned for a few days. I think he thought he could shove Shanann in the tanks as well and got there and realized there was no way in hell. And I think he would have dug her body up and reburied her elsewhere but he didn‘t realize her friend would alert authorities so quickly. @Bklover 5y
Bklover I agree. I keep thinking how morbid I am but I CAN‘T STOP. I‘ve been shopping but I can‘t wait to get home and get back to it!! And I was so happy to see your post- it‘s nice not to be alone in this obsession ! ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
Reviewsbylola I swear my husband has gotten sick of me asking him to please not kill me. 😂 But that‘s what‘s so terrifying about this case—not one single person saw it coming! I am FORCING myself to stop reading it for the night because it is consuming me. @Bklover 5y
Bklover Me too. Saturday morning and I‘m at it already. Have you ever found where he finally confessed to killing the kids too? I can‘t find it! I am insane. Now I‘m sitting here reading this stuff aloud to my partner. 5y
Reviewsbylola I just finished and I didn‘t see it but I also don‘t think he ever actually admitted it. His atty went to the DA with an offer that he would plead guilty to all counts in exchange for no death sentence. The DA and Shanann‘s family threw around the idea of requiring a full confession as one of the parameters of the deal but ultimately decided that he likely would not agree to that so they dropped it. @Bklover 5y
Bklover So what do you think? So you think there‘s any chance at all that he‘s not lying about the kids?? 5y
Reviewsbylola No, I think the evidence was insurmountable that he killed them and he knew it, so he pled guilty. They were very clearly smothered, not strangled. I also think he planned it in advance. He couldn‘t kill them over the weekend because Shanann would have known if he didn‘t send pictures. Plus he texted that co worker Sunday night about going straight to the job site in the AM, which was uncharacteristic of him. Not to mention Shanann ⬇️ @Bklover 5y
Reviewsbylola had clearly asked him via text to go with her Monday morning to take Bella to her first day of kindergarten, yet he never mentioned to anyone at work that he wouldn‘t be going in in the am and instead made plans to work. So he knew his kid wouldn‘t be starting kindergarten. But the curious part of me wants to know exactly what happened. Did he kill Shanann first after she fell asleep and then the kids? Or were they dead in bed when she came home? 5y
Bklover I agree with you! The smothered not strangled thing was pretty clear, and you don‘t dump your kids in oil if someone else killed them. You‘d call 911 in a panic. I missed the kindergarten/work thing though. I still have some to read but this has been fascinating! And I‘m so happy that I had you to discuss this with! If you run across any more of these let me know!❤️😉❤️ 5y
Bklover Oh, and why in the world did he leave the sheet out in the open! I think he bit off a bit more than he could chew, clearly! (edited) 5y
Reviewsbylola That‘s one of the reasons I think the burial was not planned. I think he meant to shove her in the oil too. If you look at his phone/texts early that morning, he kept trying to confirm that they would not be out there anytime soon, obviously so he had time to bury her. And I agree, you‘re the only person I know that has read the whole thing so I‘m glad you‘ve been as willing to discuss! @Bklover 5y
Reviewsbylola Oh, and I also heard that more discovery documents will be released down the road so I‘ll let you know if I see them pop up! @Bklover 5y
Bklover Great!!❤️❤️❤️ 5y
Jinjer @Reviewsbylola Thanks for the additional info!!! 5y
Reviewsbylola NP, I‘m anxiously awaiting the release of the new documents! @Jinjer (edited) 5y
Cinfhen I really enjoyed that exchange @Bklover @Reviewsbylola and I‘m mildly worried about both of you 😘😘 5y
Bklover Oh, Cindy, 😂😂😂😂😂. Me too!😘😘😘 5y
Reviewsbylola 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I clearly have issues. @Cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤗🤗🤗 who doesn‘t have issues @Reviewsbylola @Bklover 💕💕 5y
Reviewsbylola None of it‘s loading for me though. 😖 apparently the system is overwhelmed. @Bklover 5y
Bklover Oooh!! I am so embarrassed at how excited I am about this!!!! 5y
Bklover I can‘t get it to load either. Will keep trying. Thank you!!!! I‘ve been rereading some of the first info. I think I went through it so fast I missed things. I‘m catching a lot more little stuff this time through. Can‘t wait to see this stuff. 5y
Reviewsbylola @Bklover I‘m not sure if you saw, but there are two Chris Watts specials on tomorrow night. One on 20/20 and one on HLN! 5y
Bklover Oh hell yes!!!!! Thanks for letting me know! I‘ll go schedule them both to tape right now! Although between the both of us we probably know way more than they will show!! Can‘t wait to see them. Thanks💛💛💛 5y
Reviewsbylola Hahaha I thought the same thing! I know Shanann‘s parents will be interviewed for 20/20. I pray to god there is an interview with Cindy Watts too. She‘s a real nutcase imo. @Bklover 5y
Bklover Yes! I agree about Cindy. Can‘t wait! 5y

Time for #bathandbook. 🙌🏻 🛁

This is such a finely wrought book about the cross roads in a relationship and the decisions we make. I think the idea of a happy ending would be a #falsehope at this point. I‘m probably about 2/3 through and I‘m beginning to think that Irina is destined to be unhappy.

#nofemmeber

Amiable I really liked this book. Shriver is such a gifted writer. 5y
Billypar I haven't read any Shriver, but from what I've heard, doesn't sound like she's a writer of happy novels 🙄 5y
