Last book read in April!
I'm not going to lie, it's a slow read. Still, it's well-written, well-researched, and interesting. I've learned a lot from reading it. I feel the author did a great job trying to stay as unbiased as possible, and to give, as much as he could, the point of view of the natives.

Thanks to @debinhawaii for this giveaway a while back!

This features several stories that examine the tension of claiming Hawaii as home: people who were born there, people who left and came back, people who weren't born there but lived most of their lives there, and outsiders/tourists. Definitely some new-to-me perspectives and themes. Well written and easy to get caught up in the stories!

DebinHawaii I‘m so glad you liked it! 🤗 10h

#Read2025

This week work is totally kicking my butt so I‘m behind on reviews, book clubs, posting—all the things.😵‍💫

Posting a quick review for this book, my third #Roll100 pick of April (#24 Any short stories or essays). I have been meaning to read this since it came out & overall I really enjoyed it. The stories explore the experiences of Native Hawaiian & mixed race women in Hawaii & are a mix of speculative fiction, horror, magical ⬇️

DebinHawaii …realism & folklore. Some are weirder than others, some I liked more than others but I appreciated the sense of place in all of them. I think having lived in Honolulu for 24 years helped my enjoyment—so a pick for me. 16h

Here we go again. Headed to Kona today, the first of 3 day trips this week. I should finish the tagged book in transit.
The airport lounge is hopping this early morning. I think it‘s a Monday thing.

Trashcanman Is that the potato thingy? It‘s yummy. 3d

I didn‘t do a great job of taking a picture of yesterday‘s #IndependentBookstoreDay haul but I got a good haul. My local indie bookshop, Da Shop had 20% off all purchases, a free bookstore print after 2 pm & a new tote bag with the same print from a local artist plus a few local vendors. So I got 5 books (tagged 1 & I‘ll link the others below), tote bag, bookmarks lots of stickers & postcards from the vendors. The artist that drew the print had ⬇️

DebinHawaii … sets of postcards —the larger ones were Studio Ghibli inspired designs & the small set was of island scenes. I loved the colors of both. I went over my planned spend budget by a bit, but it was worth it. I picked the books that spoke to me as I moved around the shop. And both artists I bought from were really nice—I love supporting local artists. (edited) 4d

Saffron, a city girl from DC, inherits her uncle's chicken farm in Hawaii. While getting the place ready to sell she encounters- and solves- several mysteries. This is the first in a series so we're introduced to a lot of people in town and given the lay of the land. I'll probably read the next one.
