ferskner 1.) First, what did you think of the book? 4y

ferskner 2.) The character of Poirot has been criticised for his pettiness, and that's really on display here in his rivalry with Monsieur Giraud. How does his behavior impact your feelings toward him? Do you prefer the kinder Suchet version? 4y

ferskner 3. One critic of the book called it a distinctly French mystery, as opposed to the very English mystery of The Mysterious Affair at Styles. What do you think he meant by that? 4y

ferskner 4.) The solution of the mystery hinges on Poirot's knowledge of a 20-year-old case. Is this fair for a detective novel to do, since the reader can't hope to solve it themselves? 4y

ferskner 5.) Were you surprised by the murderer's identity? What made it surprising? Who did you suspect? 4y

ferskner 6. Christie famously hated romance in mysteries. Why do you think she included so much of it in this book, even finding a partner for Hastings, when she disliked it? 4y

Librarybelle 1. This is a re-read for me, and I forgot how much I had enjoyed it! I like the clues. Christie puts in and the red herrings that are sprinkled throughout. I couldn‘t remember the final twist, and when it did happen, I was not prepared. And, Hastings is an idiot. 4y

Librarybelle I‘ve always found Poirot to be slightly off putting - he‘s brilliant, but there is no way he‘d win an award for most charming! But, in a way, Giraud serves as a perfect character foil that made me really, really like Poirot. Giraud‘s arrogance is extreme, and I think his pettiness is way more visible than Poirot‘s in this book. Of course, Suchet is the ultimate Poirot! 4y

Librarybelle 3. Maybe more theatrics and outbursts of emotion??? Admittedly, I didn‘t see too many differences stylistically from Styles, but I also have not read very many French mysteries, so I probably don‘t have a good basis for a clear answer. 4y

Librarybelle 4. Whether it is fair or not, is hard to say. Did Christie want readers to solve the mystery, or was she concentrating more on characters and setting the scene? She does give the background story about halfway through the book, so readers do have some of the clues. She does this in later novels too - Orient Express, And Then There Were None jump to mind right away. These characters have a past that is related to the murder(s) we don‘t know at 1st. 4y

What surprised me the most was, had you really paid attention to Poirot‘s thoughts from the very beginning, you would know he suspected the murderer. “The Girl with the Anxious Eyes.” Christie threw in so many ideas as to the final solution that I couldn‘t begin to guess (and yes, I had read this previously and still couldn‘t tell you!). 4y

Librarybelle 6. This is very early in her writing career, so maybe it was a test. Or, because this is set in France, maybe to make it more French. But, one of the biggest motives for murder is jealousy, so love can play a huge part in that. 4y

AnneCecilie I liked the book and did not see the wist and turns. I don‘t like Poirot‘s pettiness, but I think that Mr. Giraud comes out even worse. Sachet will always be my Poirot. I haven‘t read much French Mystery so I can‘t really tell. The details of the case is told in a summary to the read at some point so I assume that an observant reader will be able to solve it. I didn‘t not see the solution to crime coming. 4y

AnneCecilie I have no idea why she would find a partner to Hastings. This is not mentioned later on, is it? I haven‘t read enough Poirot mysteries to know 4y

ferskner 1) I think this one is fun, but doesn't feel as tight as some of the other Poirot's that I love. The end is really satisfying, though! 2) I'm a HUGE fan of Suchet's choices for the character, and I think it's interesting that he's said that he based every decision on something he found in the books. I think that Poirot shows his pettiness in how he responds to winning the contest, but I think it's pretty minor. 4y

ferskner 3) I think that Jess is right, that this is a more overtly dramatic mystery than the stiff upper lip feel of Styles. Passionate love affairs, over-the-top ploys, etc. It's more emotional than what we usually see in other Christies. 4) That's a good point, Jess - you're right about Orient Express. I feel that the past case is told later in this book (at least that's my memory of it) and that doesn't feel fair to me. Kind of Deus ex machina. 4y

ferskner 5) I don't remember who I expected - maybe the mother? - but definitely not Martha! This one has so much going on to distract you that it'd be hard to guess. 6) I think this goes back to the French feel of the book - ooo la la! - but she continued to include Poirot as matchmaker throughout the series, so it's surprising that she spoke out against it. I need to read her bio for more. And yes - Cinderella is mentioned many times from now on! 4y

Linsy I thought this book was good, although I am getting sick of Poirot. Maybe that's why Man in the Brown Suit was extra refreshing! I agree about the old case, but if we buy into Poirot, I feel like it comes with the territory. I didn't know that Christie disliked romance, but that makes sense to me. I didn't really like this romance and tend to not connect with her romance elements all that much. Except Tommy and Tuppence. They're adorable!! 4y
