This was my bookclub pick from August of 2009. Yup. I should have just culled it from the shelf and it‘s not something I‘d recommend given the current anti-racism climate and the wealth of excellent books on the topic. Fuller‘s parents are blatantly racist and she doesn‘t address it. The book is depressing & disturbing & I have no idea why I didn‘t DNF it. At least I‘m caught up on my 2009 book club reads?

AvidReader25 I read this because of a book club pick as well and was disappointed. 3y
janeycanuck @AvidReader25 I don‘t think I‘d have liked it any more if I read it for when book club actually was but it certainly has not aged well. 3y

Stopped in to a new used bookstore I had previously dismissed as not having a good selection unless you are very into James Patterson hardcovers. I‘m happy to discover I was wrong! Their selection has vastly improved.

My hubby works 50+ hours a week and has three kids under 4, and he still made time to build my bookshelf. 😍😍
How do you organize your books? By genre? Color? Collection?

#shelfie

jfalkens I do it either randomly or right now it's alphabetically by Authors last name and I have my read and to-read separated. 7y

mrsthilkey @mrozzz I sense a lot of "I feel like I need to rearrange my books" in my future ? 7y
mrozzz Do iiiiitttttttt 7y
EvieBee Lovely! With built in book ends, too! I go by overall genre (foodie lit, classics, travel) and then arrange by size (largest to smallest and back to largest so it's not uneven looking). 7y

Myopic Books in Chicago is three and a half levels of creaky wood floors, an excellent selection of used books, and punk music. It also sports a sign that says, "no pictures" that I saw after I took this picture. ?

My reading of books from #Africa is sad. From #southeastasia even sadder 🤤So thank you Littens for help with that!
These books are written from the perspective of the white colonizers. A steamy adaptation of Duras's The Lover, set in then Indochina, came out when I was in college. Then everyone read the book.
Fuller's funny/sad memoir describes growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe during the fight for Independence.

This book is amazing! I covers Fuller's childhood being raised in Africa, first in Rhodesia during the war, and then in other countries. The is heartbreak and redemption for the whole family. Only $1.99 on Kindle!

Reading expands my horizons. Fuller's childhood in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia is so different from my own and completely fascinating. The audio version, narrated by Lisette Lecat, is excellent. I've added her follow-up memoir, Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, to my list. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BethFishReads I LOVE her memoirs. Read / listen to them all 8y

Listening to this one for book club. Subtitled An African Childhood, it tells Fuller's story of growing up in rural white Rhodesia as it was becoming Zimbabwe. Over 50% done, her story is unlike anything I've read and the narration is wonderful!

[DELETED] 2232195534 We have a friend who mostly grew u in that area in the '50's. Think I'd like this. 8y

Some days it's a struggle. I know it'll be worth it especially for book group conversation but I just can't quite get into it.
