"There is so much at play in this wondrous novel. Vi, struggling to place herself in any context that makes sense within the world, earnestly leads us into a wild experiment, to turn a blob into the man of her dreams, and I was transfixed by her voice. This is a book that looks at identity and desire in profoundly interesting ways." -- Kevin Wilson, bestselling author of Now Is Not the Time to PanicA humorous and deeply moving debut novel in the vein of Bunny and Convenience Store Woman about a young woman who tries to shape a sentient blob into her perfect boyfriend. The daughter of a Taiwanese father and white mother, Vi Liu has never quite fit into her Midwestern college town. Aimless after getting dumped by her boyfriend and dropping out of college, Vi works at the front desk of a hotel where she greets guests, refills cucumber water samovars, and tries to evade her bubbly blond coworker, Rachel. Little does Vi know her life is about to be permanently transformed when she agrees to a night out with Rachel. In the alley outside the bar, Vi discovers a strange blob--a small living creature with beady black eyes. In a moment of concern and drunken desperation, she takes it home. But the blob is no ordinary pet. Becoming increasingly sentient, it begins to grow, shift shape, and obey Vi's commands. As the entity continues to change, Vi is struck with a daring idea: she'll mold the creature into her ideal partner. Feeding it a stream of sweet breakfast cereals and American pop culture, the creature grows into a movie-star handsome white man. But when Vi's desire to be loved unconditionally threatens to spiral out of control, she is forced to confront her lonely childhood, her aloof ex-boyfriend, and the racial marginalization that has defined her relationships--a journey of self-discovery that teaches her it's impossible to control those you love.Blending the familiar with the surreal, Blob is a witty, heartfelt story about the search for love and self and what it means to be human.

Bookwormjillk The Blob was a surprise like for me too 5d
ChaoticMissAdventures @AshleyHoss820 it is very short too! I found Édouard Louis maybe 2 years ago and I am going through his backlist, he is an interesting voice. A gay French man who talks about growing up poor and rural and his strives to get out of that life while still being tethered to his family. I learned a lot about France's heath care, welfare, and how the less wealthy see the government. 4d

I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would once I got past the whole sentient blob thing. The MC, Vi, was unlikable but also kind of relatable. I‘m glad I gave it a try.

Hooked_on_books I agree about Vi, and I kinda love when authors do that. 1w
squirrelbrain This one is sounding more promising with each review! 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures I liked it too! The whole idea drew me in and I was constantly interested in where we were going. 1w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain What @squirrelbrain says. I wasn‘t that interested in this one but now I am! 1w

I am still trying to decide if I liked this because I liked it or if the bad reviews just gave me super low expectations.
Vi is a super unlikable MC. She is listless, unambitious, rude. Floating around with no direction for no reason (her parents seem great) then she molds a man out of a blob. I got Awada Bunny vibes from this but hesitant to say that, it is not as weird and the writing is not as strong (GR commenters are mad at the comparison)👇

squirrelbrain Ha, I hope I like it too as the reviews aren‘t great! 2w
sarahbarnes I‘m sort of tempted to try this one! 2w
BarbaraBB I am kind of intrigued now! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I cannot guarantee it is good! The MC is insufferable, But I did keep thinking I don't know what all the hate is about I didn't hate listening to it. 2w

Vi has stalled in life, working a humdrum job after dropping out of college. Then she finds an odd blob and discovers it‘s sentient. Then it starts to shift. On the surface, this is a quirky story about an eccentric woman, but really it‘s about the choices we make, societal/familial expectations, and how the disconnect between those can derail us. I liked this. #TOB26 #TOBlonglist

ChaoticMissAdventures Now I am excited! I have the audio from the library, just have to find the time! So glad you enjoyed 2w
squirrelbrain Oh good, I‘m glad you liked it! I‘ve reserved a physical copy at the library and hopefully it will come in soon. We may end up reading it at the same time Shawna! @ChaoticMissAdventures 2w

Vi, a twenty-something who‘s been dumped and lost direction in her life, finds a sentient blob in an alley and takes it home. She then decides to mold it into the perfect man. This was weird and quirky and really boring! Vi is pretty unlikable and very uninteresting. This could have been so much more, so much hilarity could‘ve ensued, but it fell flat for me.

Did not love this. It was all over the place and never really settled on any tone or vibe - is it supposed to be quirky, funny, deceptively serious? Then it ties up quickly with a “life lesson” and ends.

rubyslippersreads I think I‘d rather watch the old Steve McQueen movie. #BewareOfTheBlob 2mo
mom2bugnbee @rubyslippersreads Fun fact - "The Blob" was filmed in my parents' (small) hometown when they were in high school. The film's director lived there, & used many locals in the film. Both the fire chief & the police chief were the actual chiefs for the town, not actors! My parents weren't in the film, but several of their friends were in the movie theater scene 2mo

Judging by the state of dating apps and misery in the dating world, which my sister in law partakes in (unfortunately), an actual blob might be more palatable than some of the available men. Su takes this ideas and runs with it. Lonely, single, and miserable our MC finds a blob and takes it home. She literally shapes it into a man. The set up is great but I feel like way more hilarity could ensue. Almost a wasted opportunity to get banana pants.

ChaoticMissAdventures Dating in this day feels like a horror show!! Most of my single friends have decided they cannot do it anymore! 5mo

Read this one in one sitting this morning, so clearly enjoyed it. Reading the description I thought it would be more of a dark comedy along the lines of Awad, but instead Su definitely treads her own ground. Su“s message at the end is: humans know as little as about the meaning of life as a sentient blob taking on the appearance of a conglomeration of the early 90s heart throbs, and this is reassuring in a way.

BarbaraBB Great review. I have been intrigued by this book and now even more 6mo

A 20-something Taiwanese-American suffering from depression finds a sentient blob in an alleyway. Though she‘s experiencing a profound disconnectedness from herself & others, she tries to forge a connection. I liked this book from the get-go. The dark, cynical humor made me laugh. I wanted *more,* though. More character evolution & more character depth from just about everyone. It‘s certainly a book where everyone‘s uncomfortably in the middle.

monalyisha Perhaps the lack of definitive evolution is meant to show just how much of an achievement it is to even *start* giving your life shape again when you‘ve felt so flat for so long. It‘s not satisfying progress, narratively, but it *is* realistic. This may also explain why the author conceded to advice she received early on in her writing process, to “go gentler on Vi.” 7mo
monalyisha Still, I think the idea eclipses the execution. It doesn‘t feel overly optimistic, however, to believe that Su, who‘s still young, could be growing towards an amazing talent. It *does* feel overly optimistic to hope that she might drop the phrase “jacking off” from her vocabulary. But that‘s a me problem and I digress… 7mo
Chelsea.Poole Great review. I started this (I‘m talking like 4 pages read) and was so intrigued but didn‘t continue because life. But I should get this on audio. 7mo
vivastory I have this one checked out. Looking forward to it! 7mo

3.5⭐
•The title suggests that this is a romance, but it‘s not a traditional type of romance, not by any means. This won‘t be for everyone, and it‘s short, so you won‘t waste much time trying it. Overall, it is uniquely weird, slightly gross, and the MC is rather unlikable. However, she does manage some personal growth by the end.
•Eunice Wong does depression/dry wit well; despite that or because of that, I like her as a narrator.

I‘m willing to bet you haven‘t read a story where a complicated FMC befriends a sentient blob before! As expected, this was a quirky read, but it didn‘t fully land for me. The audiobook narration brought out Vi‘s dry wit. 🎧

Its_Amanda_Plz The most curious part is the cover says it‘s a love story?!! lol 9mo
ICantImReading @Its_Amanda_Plz yeah… it‘s weird 🤣 I would say the love story is more of a self-love story though, not really a romance 😆 8mo

Pod Meets World made me do it! It's actually an interesting book, even if the main character hasn't really learned anything by the end. She's on the possibly right road, but there isn't any real growth showing yet. I'm not mad that Rider Strong suggested it. #12-2025

I am really into books with female main characters- especially quirky ones. Vi is at a kind of a weird point in her life with no direction. I am only on page 14 so she has not even taken the “blob” home yet but from the description of the book it will really odd yet funny very soon. It should be a good read. 🫶🏽🩷😂

I was once a crocheter…decided to pick up a hook on a whim this week and now I‘m working on a book sleeve. Crocheting while sampling an ARC from NetGalley, with football in the background with my family—it was a pretty good evening.
Also, this book is really something!

Bookwormjillk I'm trying to re-learn crochet this winter. A book sleeve sounds like a good project! 11mo
