Going to give this a So-So rather than a Pick. Inventive premise, yes. Sharp satire and geopolitical commentary, sure. Character development and insight, not so much. The stories themselves were so formulaic to be a drag - born-gifted human in interlocking, exposition-heavy narrative faces oppression and prevails via luck/gift of birth - and creativity doesn't overcome that in this instance. Anyway, if you like wierd alien sex, this one's for you.

🎶 Baby it‘s cold outside. 🎶 It‘s been slow going with this one. I can‘t with the gratuitous graphic gore and with the misogynistic treatment of female characters that seem to be a staple for many Latino writers

Heading to a weekend cruise to the Bahamas in a few hours!
My boyfriend decided he should also have a paperback book with him (besides just relying on ebooks on his tablet), so I did the best thing a girlfriend could do. Found a local, indie bookstore and suggested books that I also want to read. It‘s a win-win, since this book will soon be mine. 😉

Reading Cuban SciFi and appreciating how Yoss portrays a colonial expectations.

Holy crackers what a ride. This amazing book is filled with so much creativity and anger. Yoss takes us to an alternate Earth which has (only just) survived alien contact. Humans are now little more than in the way of the controlling regime and they eke out existences in a myriad of ways. Told from half a dozen points of view, you get an idea of what life in Cuba might have been like at the time of writing.

My new job is a complete (enjoyable) time suck and I've literally had no time to do any book reviews but my freaking god. This book. I am utterly gobsmacked. Amazing for the science fiction and explosive for its references to Cuba. Nothing I can say about it will do any justice to its perfection.

Almost every story in this collection is like a noose tightening around your neck but you keep reading because it doesn't stop being propulsive or affecting.

Well, this unexpected gift from my aunt is amazing so far.

Now reading, excitement level high!

Sooo good! Alien domination disguised as tourism, all symbolic of life in Cuba during the 90s.

Got this through my campus's ILLiad, have been wanting to read ever since I heard @Liberty talking about it last year. Half of my curiosity was because of her description of the photo of Yoss. That is seriously the best author pic, ever!
