As much a love letter to a music genre; and a statement on making art, finding purpose, and the dangers of compromise for fame and profit, of seeking comfort over personal fulfillment; as it was a gory, creepy, violent road trip leading to one hell of a final performance.

A Faustian tale that isn't really about Faust so much as his bandmate who has to live with the aftermath of his bargain. It's not really about the tragedy of giving into temptation so much as the vacuum of being 'soulless'. When heavy metal becomes nu metal and gets taken over by corporate overlords, it's not mortal sin, just sad. Thankfully this novel has plenty of soul: it's darkly funny and fast-paced 👇
pickFinished yesterday, my July #TitlesAndTunes pick for #SexDrugsAndRockNRoll & I loved it! Although metal has never been my thing per se, I did recognize most all of the references that Hendrix does so well. You really have to be okay with gore for his books-although for claustrophobic me, there‘s a part when our MC Kris is trying to get out of a tight underground situation (bats & bugs included) that had me whimpering like a baby in a good way!😱🤣

I decided to go with a double-Hendrix for my pick this month. Grady has long been on my list of authors to try - I've read Paperbacks from Hell but never any of his novels. Message to Love is from Jimi's live album Band of Gypsys, one of my favorites from college. It's chock full of solos 🎸

bailedNope, couldn‘t do it. I read about 150 pages because it was my #lmpbc book but ultimately I‘m bailing. It‘s me, not the book. I don‘t get any of the music references and parts of it are making me feel sick. But I think my other group members liked it a lot more, and I think for the right reader it would be great!
