The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece: A novel | Tom Hanks
18 posts | 16 read | 2 reading | 7 to read
From the Academy Award-winning actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film . . . and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II. Part One of this story takes place in 1947. A troubled soldier, returning from the war, meets his talented five-year-old nephew, leaves an indelible impression, and then disappears for twenty-three years. Cut to 1970: The nephew, now drawing underground comic books in Oakland, California, reconnects with his uncle and, remembering the comic book he saw when he was five, draws a new version with his uncle as a World War II fighting hero. Cut to the present day: A commercially successful director discovers the 1970 comic book and decides to turn it into a contemporary superhero movie. Cue the cast: We meet the films extremely difficult male star, his wonderful leading lady, the eccentric writer/director, the producer, the gofer production assistant, and everyone else on both sides of the camera. Bonus material: Interspersed throughout are three comic books that are featured in the storyall created by Tom Hanks himselfincluding the comic book that becomes the official tie-in to this novels "major motion picture masterpiece."

I originally started this audiobook during the summer but my Libby loan expired halfway through listening and then had to wait 4 months for my second hold to come through. Overall really enjoyable book I would recommend to any cinephile. Tom Hanks is a legitimately good writer and he contributes to the audio narration. You can feel his decades of insider knowledge come through this incredibly detailed portrayal of the moviemaking process.

marleed I felt treading this, that it must have been a very personal writing experience. 5mo
Kimberlone @marleed agreed! And he got to make some comments on the new Hollywood emphasis on franchise-driven IP. His deep knowledge of both the production and acting side really showed through! 5mo

I‘m don‘t usually do fiction as audio, I just really love non-fiction on audio but this was available so I thought why not. It has a cast of narrators but not every character gets it‘s own narrator 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really liked some parts and other were meh. I do feel like this portrays a really accurate picture of the making of a motion picture, so that‘s good

Prairiegirl_reading I really love Tom Hanks the actor. Tom hanks the author maybe not so much. It‘s quite disappointing. 😕 6mo
mcctrish @Prairiegirl_reading it‘s not awful but ….. 6mo
Prairiegirl_reading @mcctrish exactly. I just didn‘t finish. I didn‘t hate it but I wasn‘t into it either. 6mo
mcctrish @Prairiegirl_reading I wondered if it was better in print 6mo

Fantastic audio production, but could you expect anything less from Tom Hanks? This book is different in a great way. I loved not only getting to know the actors and actresses throughout the shoot, but the background of how the film came to be and the behind the scenes people that make everything run smoothly. Interesting and I learned a little something about the movie business.

This was such a clever set up for a story about a movie from the real life inspiration through to the aftermath of the movie. I learned a lot and enjoyed these cast and crew members. Sort of a sweet story. Tom Hanks writes beautifully.

I made this book into a multi-platform experience. I read it at the same time that I was listening to Tom Hanks read the audiobook. His storytelling in both his writing and his reading it made it such an entertaining and engaging time. In fact I considered it auditory therapy.

DivineDiana That is quite an endorsement! #auditorytherapy 9mo
Kimberlone My library loan expired halfway through listening to the audiobook. The narration is fantastic though and I am frustrated I still have 12 weeks of waiting for my current hold to come back in! 9mo

I wasn‘t sure about this at first; it‘s so very long at 16 hours on audio and I nearly bailed near the start, because why use 1 word when 20 will do, Mr Hanks?!

However, the verbosity meant that we really got to know the characters, as well as how a movie is made. I laughed and, yes, I even cried and it ended up being one of my favourite audios of the year. I don‘t think it will work as well in print though: the wordiness works better on audio.

Cortg Thanks for the review and audio version recommendation! I‘m definitely going to put a hold in this one! 10mo
Oryx Glad to see you liked this. It's on my shelf... That might get me to it sooner 10mo

Started this on audio, but finished in print. This was not what I expected; in fact, it is truly unlike any novel I‘ve read before. In some ways it defies description. Go in with an open mind - and a curiosity about the day to day details of movie production.

While the overall story has some flaws, Tom Hanks is a talented story teller with a gift for capturing the essence of all kinds of people and situations. Highly entertaining.

CSeydel The strength of the novel is in the characters and the individual scenes - you-are-there vivid without being overwritten. Ok, FINE, yes, sometimes overwritten. I don‘t always need to know what the wallpaper looked like or the sound of the tabletop or what type of cup the frozen yogurt was in. But the characters, my god, they absolutely walk off the page. 10mo
CSeydel The novel‘s weakness is in the structure and overall story. Don‘t expect a tightly written plot, because this ain‘t that. Many loose ends remain at the end. Many storylines arise and disappear without any proper resolution. Like life on a movie set, I suppose: when the project is over people take their drama home with them and you never see them again. I also found the plot of the screenplay odd and hard to wrap my head around. 10mo
CSeydel But I enjoyed getting down into the details of how movies are made - and who makes them. Where do these people come from? What kind of childhood did the makeup artist have? What does a key grip do? Where do all the props come from? How does a location shoot work? What do they use “local casting” for? What‘s the difference between an extra and a day player? And most importantly, what does everyone eat? (edited) 10mo

Sorry Tom, this isn't the book for me. I struggled through the first part, and found I dreaded going further, so I'm bailing.

I've been enjoying the Spider-Man book, but I only started Tom Hank's book this morning on my way to work. I'm only about an hour into the book, trying to give it a chance, but it's definitely outside of my usual reading zone.

marleed I stopped audio‘ing the Tom Hanks book as a beginning middle end type of thing and instead listened to Tom Hanks as if he was interviewed about the haphazard way of turning an idea into a Major Motion Picture. Then it worked for me. 10mo

I will not long recall the many details and characters of this audio experience. But I will remember my long day of springtime organization when with earbuds tuned in I clearly imagined myself nestled in at the Hollywood house party of Tom Hanks, no less! Here Tom regaled the room (with some interjecting by other famous friends) of Bill Johnson‘s latest movie experience. I‘m so happy Libby forwarded me that invite!

I did it! I marked the last Friday of the month as bookish Friday, I took my morning slow, made my #bookspin & had a nice time, except I didn‘t actually read… 😂It‘s a growing process!

For some reason I‘ve been worried about Tom Hanks dying for the last few years, 🤷🏽‍♀️ he‘s such a talented man who seems to live with conviction, I‘m looking forward to his book!
