The Family Roe: An American Story
The Family Roe: An American Story | Joshua Prager
9 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
A masterpiece of reporting on the Supreme Courts most divisive case, Roe v. Wade, and the unknown lives at its heart. Despite her famous pseudonym, no one knows the truth about Jane Roe, Norma McCorvey (19472017), whose unwanted pregnancy in 1970 opened a great fracture in American life. Journalist Joshua Prager spent years with Norma, discovered her personal papers, a previously unseen trove, and witnessed her final moments. With an explosive revelation at the core of the case, he tells her full story for the first time. Prager also traces Roes fifty-year trajectory through three compelling figures: feminist lawyer Linda Coffee, who filed the original Texas lawsuit yet now lives in obscurity; Curtis Boyd, a former fundamentalist Christian, today a leading provider of third-trimester abortions; and Mildred Jefferson, the first Black female Harvard Medical School graduate, who became a pro-life leader with great secrets. Essential to our understanding of this key debate, the right to choose or the right to life, The Family Roe will change the way you think about our enduring American divide.

#FebruaryWrapUp. 3 bingos and #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin read. It was unusual month as I normally read equally between print, digital and audio but half of my February books were in print. 16 books 5958 pages a very good month 😊

wisherwishinguponastar Congrats! I must say that I love a good graph, especially when it has fun info! 14mo

I only read one non fiction book in February but it was a winner off my #AuldLangSpine list and is the best of the year so far.

Amiable It's long enough that it should count as 2! :) 14mo

This book was 11 years in the making and I think it would have been incredibly hard to write an unbiased account of all the players in Roe v Wade. I think Prager did that. It is long. I listened on audio, got lost a couple of times and cringed a bit at some of the descriptions. It is complete account of the woman behind Roe, her family and children as well as the religious leaders and politicians of the time. Another great pick from my #ALS list

Amiable I'm so glad you liked it! It is a complicated story and I thought Prager told it completely and well. (edited) 1y
Deblovestoread @Amiable I am glad you had it on your list! I might not have picked it up otherwise and it was fascinating. 1y

I have really upped my nonfiction game this year so am super stoked about my #AuldLangSpine list from @Amiable In January I will be reading at least one of these NF and one F book but intend, as always, to read as many off the list as I can throughout the year. I have already read and loved 10, 12, and 13 so I have a great bunch of books to explore. Well done, Amy! Thanks Alisha for a great match!

monalyisha You‘re welcome! I‘ll put in a word of support for Disappearing Earth. I absolutely loved that book! 1y
Megabooks I‘m with @monalyisha in putting in a good word for DE! 1y
TheKidUpstairs @monalyisha @megabooks I keep looking at that one in the library... Maybe 2023 will be the year I finally bring it home! 1y

monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs Yes! There‘s so much to talk about, too! I remember really bonding with a coworker (who‘s since left, sadly) about our theories! The writing is stellar. 1y
Amiable Oh, I‘m glad my list appeals to you! I cringe every time I submit my super nonfiction-heavy lists—I envision @monalyisha pulling her hair out trying to match me with someone. 😀 1y
Chelsea.Poole @amiable I felt the same…My list was half fiction and half nonfiction. Once I gave NF a chance, it‘s been life changing, honestly 🙌 @monalyisha @thekidupstairs @megabooks Also, with you all on (edited) 1y
Amiable @Chelsea.Poole I‘d love to see your nonfiction list, too! 1y

This book is excellent and I cannot get over how sad the life of Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe“) was -- she was used by pro-choice feminists and she was used by Operation Rescue and I'm not sure she knew herself how she felt about abortion rights by the end.

Very well-researched account of Roe v Wade, the landmark court case that affirmed a woman‘s right to autonomy over her own body. It tells the story of abortion in America before and after it was legalized through the lives of several people associated with the case, including Norma McCorvey (aka “Jane Roe”) and the daughters she gave up for adoption. It‘s a challenging, complicated, emotional read.

Goals are to complete my #ChunksterChallenge2022 book, enjoy my reads for #NYWD22 and get a coverall on my bingo board for #Nonfiction2022.

My word for 2022 is “calm.” I‘m working to still my brain when it‘s darting all over the place, slow down and embrace the moment.

I am enjoying this tagged book— it‘s interesting and informative.

Thanks for the tag, @MoonWitch94 !

CBee Thanks for the tag ♥️ 2y
Singout Calm is an excellent word. One of my non-reading goals for 2022 as well--more body-mind connection. I started yesterday by ordering a new charger that will help me keep my phone out of my bedroom!

Amiable @Singout I started doing yoga about 5 years ago, mostly for my back as I get older. I thought the physical part of mastering poses would be the most difficult thing, but it‘s the mental aspect that still proves daunting to me. I struggle with what my yoga instructor calls “monkey mind.” I am constantly trying to learn to be comfortable in stillness. Sending vibes for calm to you as well! 🙂 (edited) 2y
