The first in an exciting new historical mystery series set in the home of Agatha Christie! Colleen Cambridge's charming and inventive new historical series introduces an unforgettable heroine in Phyllida Bright, fictional housekeeper for none other than famed mystery novelist Agatha Christie. When a dead body is found during a house party at the home of Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan, it's up to famous author's head of household, Phyllida Bright, to investigate... Tucked away among Devons rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Housekeeper Phyllida Bright, as efficient as she is personable, manages the large household with an iron fist in her very elegant glove. In one respect, however, Mallowan Hall stands far apart from other picturesque country houses . . . The manor is home to archaeologist Max Mallowan and his famous wife, Agatha Christie. Phyllida is both loyal to and protective of the crime writer, who is as much friend as employer. An aficionado of detective fiction, Phyllida has yet to find a gentleman in real life half as fascinating as Mrs. Agathas Belgian hero, Hercule Poirot. But though accustomed to murder and its methods as frequent topics of conversation, Phyllida is unprepared for the sight of a very real, very dead body on the library floor . . . A former Army nurse, Phyllida reacts with practical common senseand a great deal of curiosity. It soon becomes clear that the victim arrived at Mallowan Hall under false pretenses during a weekend party. Now, Phyllida not only has a houseful of demanding guests on her handsalong with a distracted, anxious staffbut hordes of reporters camping outside. When another dead body is discoveredthis time, one of her housemaidsPhyllida decides to follow in M. Poirots footsteps to determine which of the Mallowans guests is the killer. With help from the villages handsome physician, Dr. Bhatt, Mr. Dobble, the butler, along with other household staff, Phyllida assembles the clues. Yet, she is all too aware that the killer must still be close at hand and poised to strike again. And only Phyllidas wits will prevent her own story from coming to an abrupt end . . .

I‘ve been halfway to a reading slump for weeks now so I decided I‘d pick something uncomplicated to read and hope it jogs me out of it.

This was just okay. Phyllida Bright works for Agatha Christie and is also her friend. She loves Poirot, and when a murder happens at Mallowan Hall, she takes it upon herself to try to solve it Poirot style. Unfortunately, this book is pretty boring. There‘s far too much detail about the everyday tasks and clothing of the staff. Bright‘s Poirot-like villain and motive reveal speech at the end is far too long, pretentious, and boring.

The tagged book is really my nighttime book, but I hadn‘t yet picked a new walking book, so I listened to it on my #audiowalk today. I started reading North Woods while we were at the beach; its structure is really interesting. Agent to the Stars is our road trip book — it‘s about an agent who discovers his new job is to introduce a friendly, but ugly and stinky, alien race to humans. We are loving it.

Phyllida is the housekeeper (head of the servant team) at Agatha Christie‘s estate when a visiting guest is found murdered in the library. Phyllida takes it upon herself to investigate to try to solve the crime. This was a fun book in a Downton Abbey-type setting. I would read this author again!

4✨This Agatha Christie style mystery actually had Agatha Christie in it. A murder of an unknown, at first, man is found in the library. Christie‘s housekeeper, Phyllida, spots a lot of the clues missed by law enforcement. Very well done! I was not fully engaged the entire time, but enjoyed the book a lot. #Scarathon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick

Lots of good “M” books! I snort-laughed through this first installment of a mystery series. 😂

Honorable mention: A Man Called Ove; Meet Me in the Margins; The Myth of Perpetual Summer.

This is a fictional book from the point of view of the staff working at Agatha Christie‘s home with her 2nd husband.

A stranger shows up and the next morning is found murdered. The housekeeper decides to solve the murder because she doesn‘t believe the police can.

This gives Agatha some “ideas” for her books.

It was a fun read. The story is complete fiction, just has Agatha and Max in it.

It‘s the first in a series. Next one comes out Oct.

kspenmoll Sounds like fun! 2y

Received my Book Riot #GetTBR recommendations. I‘m a little annoyed because they didn‘t send me a reminder email to update my requests and I was on vacation, so I didn‘t update what I was looking for.

I‘m not disappointed with these recs and the 2 bonus recs! It‘s just going to make me already miss Hawaii. They look like they‘ll be good summer reads though.

Colleen Cambridge has written a new historical series introducing Phyllida Bright, fictional housekeeper for none other than mystery novelist Agatha Christie. EadieB A former Army nurse, Phyllida has common sense and a great deal of curiosity. Another body is soon discovered, so Phyllida needs to act quickly to figure which of the guests is the killer before another body is found. I enjoyed the characters and it seemed like I was reading one of Christie's novels. The plot had lots of red herrings and an interesting solution. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, then you should check this one out. 2y

OK, I‘m not embarrassed to say I “snort” laughed through this entire 200-page series starter. This book is a romp!! Phyllida Bright is a former army nurse, (40ish with a mysterious past) and the housekeeper at Mallowan Hall (home of the Mallowans/Christies). She‘s also a friend to Agatha and her biggest fan. When a man is murdered in the library and later one of her young housemaids, she takes it upon herself to investigate the visiting guests. ⬇️

robinb Both sharp and stubborn, Phyllida is a force to be reckoned with both above and below stairs. While I enjoyed the whodunit, I equally enjoyed the research into and the authenticity of the below stairs characters and their lives. Our heroine kept me entertained with her dry wit and boundless confidence. Honestly I didn‘t want to put this one down. So happy to have found a new series to look forward to. 5/5⭐️ 3y

MamaGina Oh, I‘ll definitely like this one, thanks for bringing it to my attention with your great review. Two things I love—finding a new to me author with a significant backlist OR getting started with a new author at the beginning of a promising series! 📚❤️🤓 3y
robinb @CarolynM @LeahBergen Oh good! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! 😘😘 3y
robinb @MamaGina @LeahBergen @CarolynM Just discovered that Colleen Cambridge is one of at least 3 pseudonyms for this author. She‘s also Colleen Gleason (I‘ve already read some of these! 😆) and CM Gleason. She has a wide range of genres including paranormal, YA, historical and mystery/thriller. Obviously the woman is prolific! 😳😆😍 3y

A body. In the library. At the home of Agatha Christie? What a way to start a new mystery series! Cambridge joins the ranks of authors reimagining the roles of authors & sidekicks of famous detectives & introduces us to Phyllida Bright, housekeeper to Agatha & Max Mallowan. Mrs. Bright is every bit as smooth & clever as Marple & Poirot, although with a definite penchant for the Belgian detective. Post at http://itsallaboutthebook.org
