Girl, 11
Girl, 11 | Amy Suiter Clarke
In this debut thriller for fans of Riley Sager and Karin Slaughter, a social worker turned true crime podcaster investigates a decades-old serial killer cold case only to unwittingly create new victims. Once a social worker specializing in kids who were the victims of violent crime, Elle Castillo is now the host of a popular true crime podcast that tackles cold cases of missing children in her hometown of the Twin Cities. After two seasons of successfully solving cases, Elle decides to tackle her white whale--The Countdown Killer. Twenty years ago, TCK abruptly stopped after establishing a pattern of taking and ritualistically murdering three girls over seven days, each a year younger than the last. No one's ever known why--why he stopped with his eleventh victim, a girl of eleven years old, or why he followed the ritual at all. When a listener phones in with a tip, Elle sets out to interview him, only to discover his dead body. And within days, a child is abducted following the original TCK MO. Unlike the experts in the media and law enforcement who have always spun theories of a guilty suicide, Elle never believed TCK had died, and her investigation was meant to lay that suspicion to rest. But instead, her podcast seems to be kicking up new victims.

The first 50 % wasn't really intriguing but I loved the rest of the book. Characters could have been a bit more fleshed out but I liked the story and one excellent twist.

The ending made me to hope that this would be a series.

I haven‘t been reading crime thrillers other than police procedurals in a while so I really liked this. The main character is a podcaster on a cold cases pod cast exploring a 20 year old unsolved case. I liked the structure and the inclusion of the podcast transcripts.

🌹 I mostly prefer to admire my beloved authors from afar. Though I do always enjoy author events when I have the chance to attend. Might be fun to see Amor Towles speak sometime.
🌹 🌹 If you are in the mood for another thriller, tagged is a good one. Set in the Twin Cities!

First book finished in July! Loved this one, hard to put down. A true crime podcast about a serial killer from the 1990s named the Countdown Killer because of his fixation on numbers with his victims. Now, 20 years later, Elle is doing a podcast on this case because some believe he died in a fire but others believe he is still out there. When a girl is kidnapped, could it be the Countdown Killer or a copycat? I couldn't put this one down.

🌼 May Reads🌼
I read so much romance this month. Too much romance? Absolutely not—but yes I think I needed to be swept away. (I especially loved BOOK LOVERS like every other person on the planet and A LADY FOR A DUKE, which would be a great Pride read if you‘re on the look out!)
Other favorites of the month were the compulsively readable GIRL, 11, TRUE BIZ, and VERA KELLY: LOST AND FOUND (out in June!)
Hope you had a great May! Onto June!

marleed Sometimes it‘s just fun to drown in romance novels and stay there until your fingers get all pruney! 2y

Thank you @vivastory for recommending this one. I loved it!

I suggest listening to the audiobook because it's done really well with different voice actors for the podcast portions and the interviews.

Suspenseful read that had me unsure of what was going to happen next, and it's a great example of why I'm loving true crime fiction lately.

vivastory I'm glad you liked this one! I almost went the audio route for this one & now I wish I had. 2y

An intriguing set-up, with a true crime podcast framing the investigation into a serial killer cold case. Our protagonist, Elle, has a podcast which looks into cold cases, and the story opens with a new season and a new set of crimes, those of the Countdown Killer. But as Elle gets closer to finding new leads, a series of events happen that make her doubt they are coincidences. And ultimately Elle needs to confront the secrets of her own past.👇

ScientistSam I guessed those secrets before they are revealed, but it's still a gripping read. TW as the serial killer targets young women and girls 2y

In February 1996, a twenty year old college student goes missing & a week later turns up dead. Three days after her initial disappearance a nineteen year old student goes missing & then also turns up dead 7 days later. The media moniker for this serial killer terrorizing the Twin Cities in the late 90s was The Countdown Killer. When TCK stops his murders it becomes a cold case that podcaster Elle Castillo attempts to solve in the new season of👇

vivastory her true crime podcast. Clarke's podcast novel has a great beginning. I read half of it last night. Interspersing excerpts from Elle's podcast with traditional narrative chapters, it was a creepy page turner with a great sense of place. I had a flood of memories of my time spent in Minneapolis while reading it. I admit that the final act has some issues, but overall I enjoyed it & would rec. it to fans of Summers' Sadie & Wesolowski's Six Stories 2y
vivastory This is my final book planned for #cloakanddaggerchristmas I am still planning on watching an episode of a tv series for the Columbo prompt. Here's the 6 prompts achieved:
Columbo: Sherlock (planning on watching in the next couple of days)
Agatha Raisin: Girl, 11
Tommy & Tuppence: The Word is Murder
Kinsey Millhone: B is For Burglar
Detective Galileo: Mistletoe Murders
Flavia de Luce: Will to Kill
It's been a blast! Thanks @merelybookish

merelybookish Nice work Scott! And congrats for finishing early. It's a fun Xmas tradition! How was B for Burglar? 2y
jlhammar I enjoyed this as well. Fun page-turner. 2y
vivastory @merelybookish I'm a bit surprised that I finished with a week left. The case in B is for Burglar is really strange. I found Kinsey Millhone's no nonsense personality calming. I really liked it, out of the 5 I read it was a favorite. If I remember correctly you were planning on reading A is for Alibi? 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen I think you'd like it 📚📚 2y
vivastory @jlhammar I look forward to what Clarke published next 2y
merelybookish @vivastory I liked it Kinsey but found the mystery a bit obvious. But I didn't know if that was also inexperience on Grafton's part. This experience has taught me I like my mysteries a bit slant, or when the mystery isn't the only thing going on in the book, if that makes sense. 2y
vivastory @merelybookish I have only read 2 Grafton books & I liked the second one more. I was genuinely surprised by the ending. That makes complete sense about wanting a slant on mysteries. I figured out the culprit in The Word is Murder, but the meta fiction elements of the book were so intriguing that I loved it. 2y

#2021Book57
This is one of the best thrillers I've read in awhile. The characters are great, the choices they make are both realistic and often infuriating, and the killer is creepy enough to make you want to keep reading. One of the twists wasn't as much of a surprise as it was probably supposed to be, but that's likely my fault for reading too many books like this.

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I love true crime podcasts so I was more than a little excited to receive this book to review. Told in a mix of true crime podcast intertwined with Elle's narrations, her hunt for The Countdown Killer had me hooked. It was dark, twisty, atmospheric, everything I want in a thriller. It was hard to put down between reading sessions.

Overall Rating 4⭐ | Narration 😍 = Amazing
The podcast element is very well done in this book and also very well performed by the narrators. Andi Ardnt as the voice of the MC was very good...and she always is. Overall, it was quite entertaining with some thrilling suspenseful moments. Plus a twist of sorts that you may see coming especially if you‘re listening on Audio.

This is an impressive and genuinely thrilling debut novel! With a podcast frame, Elle‘s latest season focuses on TCK, The Countdown Killer who terrorized Minneapolis in the late 1990s. But as Elle investigates, it soon becomes clear that she is tracking down the truth! Some of the plot follows predictable paths but with likable characters and an engaging format, this one is hard to put down!!

Loved this thriller! It does a great job of mixing a true crime podcast with real life action and investigation. Although I read the eArc for this, I'm super excited for when this comes out on audio! It wasn't perfect, but it was a wild ride and I devoured it. Book 7 of 2021

This week has been one of a lot of anxiety- my co-worker and office mate tested positive for Covid-19. I've had 2 negative rapid tests, but I'm going for a PCR test later today. But thankfully, there are books and the #AnyWayYouReadathon to distract me. My goal is just to read as much as possible, and yesterday I finished the 2 books pictured- both from my tbr! @Eggbeater @kimmypete1

peanutnine How was the Tom Hanks book? I've thought about buying it 3y
CocoReads Good luck on the pcr test. Rapid tests give more false positives than negatives if that‘s any consolation. Enjoy your reading. I‘m determined to finish my book group book (a week late) today (edited) 3y

Buechersuechtling @MidnightBookGirl What @CocoReads says, is what I know about rapid-tests, too. Hope that helps to ease your nerves. 🤗 But anyway, I totally understand that you‘re heading for a PCR-test. Until you‘re getting your results, I hope you‘re continuing happy-weekend-reading. 3y
MidnightBookGirl @penutnine I really enjoyed it... it felt cozy!

MidnightBookGirl @CocoReads @Buechersuechtling I work at a large campus that is made up of Healthcare, Assisted and Independent Living, so I get tested once or twice a week and we have had false positives, but my coworker had a false negative rapid test the same day she took her PCR (and she had a fever), which came back positive, so I was surprised my job didn't make me take a PCR. I still feel pretty okay, so I hopefully I'm good to get the vaccine Tuesday! 3y

GIRL, 11 is phenomenal and should be added to your TBR immediately! Between the propulsive plot and the format of podcast episodes between chapters, I could not put it down. The characters jump off the page - especially main character Elle, the host of a popular true crime podcast that tackles cold cases. Elle's bravery and compassion pull you along on her journey to solve the case. This is an outstanding debut! #2021Debuts #bookstagram
