Haunting of Gillespie House
Haunting of Gillespie House | Darcy Coates
Some spirits linger...Elle is thrilled to spend a month minding the beautiful Gillespie property. Over an hour's drive from the nearest town, the aging mansion is ideal for someone seeking solitude. But as she explores her new home, Elle makes a startling discovery: there's a graveyard nestled deep in the woods, containing a generation of the house's residents...all who died the same year. Then things start to go very wrong, very quickly. There are skittering noises inside the walls...slamming doors...whispers in the night...a locked room...and a horrifying mystery that wants to be solved. As she investigates further, Elle begins to unravel the property's dark and dangerous history. At its center is Jonathan Gillespie, a tyrannical cult leader and the house's original owner. And as Elle soon learns...just because he's dead, doesn't mean he's gone. Also By Darcy Coates: The Haunting of Ashburn HouseThe Haunting of Blackwood HouseCraven ManorThe House Next DoorVoices in the Snow

This is my first time reading Darcy Coates. This was a quick read that was a little cheesy in parts, was reminiscent of a YA novel, and ended as quick as it started. I actually read it in a few hours. Elle is given the opportunity to house sit the Gillespie House while the owners leave on a retreat. Almost immediately strange sounds are heard and Elle is tasked with solving the mystery of what is going on in Gillespie House.

Day 17 #Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Haunt. I love haunted house stories, and Darcy Coates tends to be very good at them. This is on my TBR for Dewey's 24-Hour #Readathon this weekend. #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

FlynnDewey I like the dripping blood in the background! 5mo

Book 6 of spooky October reads. First time I‘ve read this author and it was quick and very atmospheric. Collection of novella.

Elle gets booked for a house sitting gig and discovers the house has secrets left behind by generations of the Gillespie family and maybe a ghost or a few. A ton of fluff but some creepy moments and a fun, gross villain! 😁

Finished this around Christmas. Again, a girl is at a house, alone, isolated as starnge things begin to happen. I can not emphasize enough that this is the perfect ghost story for Christmas time!
It ends with some short stories that are fun and give some background to the main story.
Scary, quick and fun.

amber_ldsmom I just picked this up at B&N this week! Can‘t wait to read! 3y
Buchbeeg @amber_ldsmom Awesome! Let me know what you think! 3y
Twainy I‘d buy the books by this author based on covers alone! Haunted house story? Bonus! SCORE! 😁 I don‘t have any yet but they‘re all on my list! Hope they‘re as good as they look! 3y
Buchbeeg @Twainy She does have awesome covers! And stories :) 3y

September Roundup Part 2: The second half of the month was a bunch of books that were just okay. Nothing bad, but nothing for my best of the year list.

I really enjoyed this one. Definitely way more compelling than Rookward, and I liked the bonus stories (except the last one) as well.

Haunted houses are some of my favourite scary subjects, and even though the other Coates didn‘t really work for me, I‘m usually willing to try again.

This was almost so-so. I like that this wasn‘t TOO scary but kept me engaged.

I really enjoyed this collection of a novella and three short stories. It‘s so hard to write a short story or novella and give the reader solid character development and plot answers, but I feel like Coates mostly delivered. The last story with the mannequins was probably my favorite, aside from the novella about Gillespie House. Scary stories aren‘t usually my cup of tea (I‘m a wimp), but I will be reading more from Coates in the future.

Trying to dive into this one while waiting at the emergency vet. My dogs got in a fight and Utley‘s ear was torn open. Fun times! Thank you to Sourcebooks Early Reads for the copy.

BookDragonNotWorm Aw, I hate when fur siblings fight (I've had the same thing happen more times than I can count - but then they curl up and cuddle???). Wishing for a speedy recovery for your pup! 4y

Another fun haunted house novel by Coates. This one involves a house sitter and all kind of weird things start happening-duh. I don‘t find this scary but I do find them to be very enjoyable.
