A Good Year
A Good Year | Peter Mayle
13 posts | 16 read | 3 to read
Max Skinner is a man at the heart of London's financial universe until his employers embark on a little asset-stripping of their own. Himself. Amid the grey London drizzle, there is one potential ray of sunshine: Max's Uncle Harry has left him his estate in his will - an eighteenth-century chateau and vineyard an hour's drive from Avignon. Out of a job, and encouraged by his friend Charlie about the money in modern wine, he heads for France. What Max discovers is a beautiful house, wonderful weather and a bustling village. The downside is the quality of the wine in his vineyard, but when Max suggests calling in an expert, Roussel, a former employee of his uncle's, is resistant. Help is at hand, however, when a beautiful blonde Californian arrives unexpectedly at the chateau. Peter Mayle's delightful novel will enchant the audiences who bought A YEAR IN PROVENCE and TOUJOURS PROVENCE in their millions.

Here are my #roll100 selections for November; decided to go with my no. 1 selection.

keys_on_fire This #roll100 idea sounds neat! I‘ve never done it before… 5mo

A quick and easy read, bearing almost no resemblance to the movie. Max arrives to take over his late uncle‘s property and finds himself learning to love life lived the French way. Some drama with a possible rival inheritor, but much less than you‘d expect. The mystery over the elusive, expensive wine felt forced, but overall this was a decent read.

“By this time, Christie was anesthetized. She had arrived at that stage of overeating reached by certain species prior to hibernation and was barely capable of movement or thought, conscious only of an instinct to curl up in a quiet, dark place.”

Sounds a bit like Thanksgiving to me.

This is one of my all time favourite films and it‘s taken me ages to get round to reading the book as I didn‘t want to be disappointed by it. Sadly, I was, this is one of those rare cases where the film is a lot better than the book. Honestly if the names weren‘t the same I‘m not sure I‘d have recognised it. I‘ll stick to the film!
Summer romance for #summerfun

JamieArc I loved Peter Mayle‘s books when I was much younger and falling in love with France. I didn‘t realize this was a film. I‘ll have to try to get my hands on it. 4y
Mrs_B @JamieArc it stars Russel Crowe and Marion Cotillard and it‘s just lovely. Really captures the quirks of the French! Let me know if you watch it and like it. 4y

I didn't love this as much as I remembered from my first reading, but it's still above-average.

I'd like to reread Mayle's Chasing Cezanne soon, but none of my usual sources has it on audio. I'll have to wait for time/energy to read with my eyes (I have it in hardcover). That may be a while. . . .

CoffeeAndABook It can go both ways, can‘t it? Sometimes the memory‘s just so much better than the re-read and other times you‘re blown away by a 2nd read, and it‘s hard to believe you missed so much the first time. 🙇🏼‍♀️ (edited) 4y
JoyBlue @CoffeeAndABook True story! 4y
BookishMe I adore Peter Mayle! I just got hold Chasing Cezanne and will read it soon ☺️☺️ this book you've reviewed is on my list. 4y

#24in48 Challenge
Hour 36: Food Related Title

Mayle is particularly talented when it comes to his descriptions of food, and this is my favorite of his novels. It's a lovely little story, and the film version (with Russell Crowe) is quite good as well.
@24in48

JoyBlue This is the first of his novels that I'm *re*reading. From memory alone, I think it might be my favorite as well—or maybe Chasing Cezanne—I'm going to have to reread that one, too, I think. He's one of the few writers for whom I own a significant chunk of the catalog (though, I don't own this one—I'm heading to Thriftbooks right now to see if I can rectify that with a hardcover in like new condition 😉). 2018 was a year that I didn‘t meet my reading goal, but I did read lots of good books. The Flavia de Luce series, Kitchens of the Great Midwest, and Before We Were Yours... my favorites. I really liked Leaving Time too - it surprised me.

I‘m ready for you, 2019!

I know everyone loves Mayle's A Year in Provence, but A Good Year is my personal favorite of his.

JanuarieTimewalker13 I like Peter Mayle!! Haven‘t read him in about 11 years, but I‘ve read 2 of his books, but not this one. Stacking! 6y
Crazeedi Stacking! Have a couple more books he wrote on my list 6y
Traci1 @JanuarieTimewalker13 @Crazeedi I hope you both like it. I actually saw the movie (starring Russell Crowe) before reading the book, and it's really good as well. 6y

A simple book. It has got easy pace.
It's about the sudden changes, drastic changes in Max's life and how he sails easily through turbulent times. All characters are likable and believable.
It's about small town, bistro, eateries, French delicacies, Sunshine, french eccentricities, back-and-forth-Englishman-Frenchman retorts, taste of wines and so on.
If yuh want to ease yourself and want a quick read go for it. It's perfect laid-back read :)

It was an easy read, so easy that it does not really have a well-thought of story. It was average and bordering boring. There was no clear, real, exciting plot. If you like wine maybe you'll like this but this book is not for me.

This is a book that I borrowed from my mom. She really enjoyed it. I have yet to read it but I know the movie that was based on this book got good reviews. #booktober #somethingborrowed

PurpleyPumpkin I quite liked this book! It's a nice, easy read. I saw the movie too, and as often is the case, I thought the book was better. Hope you enjoy. 🍷 8y

I read this book a while back. A friend was talking to me about magic words that draw you to a book when browsing at the store or library. What are your attractors? I wrote about it here :
https://novelmeals.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/magic-words-in-book-blurbs/

DebinHawaii Great post! I'll get over & comment on it at some point. My top words/things that will make me at least explore a book more, if not buy are food & culinary references; a setting in Hawaii, Japan, India, or Britain; mystery/thrillers/police/FBI, set among books/book places, WWII, & Jane Austen/P&P. 8y
