Look who we had for a Zoom author visit 😍. I love Aiden Thomas! They‘ve just finished two more books and will be at their first in-person author event at Bridgeport Barnes & Noble (Tigard) at the beginning of November.
They also shared they come up with the main character first, and then plot (but doesn‘t recommend it).
And they‘re a big Disney fan. And likes hiding Easter eggs in their books.
Our Teen‘s Librarian killed the interview too!

I feel so complete after finishing this book. I was hesitant at first with the slowness of the story, but as I kept reading I got hooked into the homey sensations of East LA and Latinx culture, loved Yadriel and Julian's blooming relationship, adored how Adien Thomas made Julian and Yadriel feel so alive and rounded. I was starting ball a little bit at the end. I loved the journey and emotional experience I had with this book.

"Hey I'm not hatimg," Maritza said, at least having the decency to keep her voice down. "I mean, having a ghost boyfriend might be kinda hot." Her knowing smile was obnoxious.

quote
phantomx
Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas

When Yadriel walked back out, Julian was leaning against the wall, still looking far too amused.
"You're not covering your ears." Yadriel glared. "And I didn't hesr you singing."
"My singing voice is too sexy," Julian said with a solemn shake of his head. "You'd fall in love with me, lile, immediately."

quote
phantomx
Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas

Yadriel held his breath. His fingers knotted into the blanket under him. A thrill tickled down his spine to the tips of his toes. It was disorienting, filling his head with dangerous thoughts. He wanted to feel Julian's hands ghosting over his skin. Wondered what Julian's short or if his lips felt as soft as they looked.

quote
phantomx
Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas

Yadriel rolled his eyes and scoffed. "What? Because you're some kind of mujeriego, or something? Too many ladies to pick just one?" he asked with a flare of annoyance.
"No." Julian's tone was cross, eyes still on the page. "Because I'm gay, asshole."
Yadriel blinked. He hadn't expected that.

Hit page 120 in Cemetery Boys! Takes a little bit of time to warm up to Julian Diaz--he's so gruff, hot-headed and rude at times (reminds me of Guts from Berserk). And the scenes with food being prepared for Dia de Muertos makes me mouth water.

quote
phantomx
Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas

Julian didn't respond for a moment. His attention flickered to Diego's and Andres' portajes before he eyed the brujos, an unimpressed look on his face. Finally, he jerked his chin up in that nod guys always did to greet each other.

quote
phantomx

He squeezed the necklace in his hand, trying to come up with a better reason to leave Julian in the old church than not wanting to hide a hot boy in his room.
A hot dead boy.

Yadriel goraned. Of course the first spirit he suommoned wouldn't be released willingly. No, he had to get stuck with one that had an attitude problem.

It took me a while to read this, maybe because I wasn't in quite the right mood, but in the end I really enjoyed it. Julian and Yadriel's connection was sweet, and I loved Yads' family. But sad about who the big bad turned out to be -- that was kind of predictable. But all in all, fun.

It‘s been a bit rough recently. I quit my job, started my final semester of undergrad, and the hits just keep coming. However, books are currently getting me through it, and Thomas‘ lovely Cemetery Boys is soooo gooood. If you‘re looking for some good LGBT, magical YA romance that can be a little predictable, look no further. I can‘t wait to see what they come out with next.

Aiden Thomas's Cemetery Boys was my first five-star read of the year. Wow. I had read some great reviews but had NO idea how much I would love this book.⠀

Yadriel's family is part of a Latinx community of brujas and brujos who destiny is drive by gender: brujas have one role to play and brujos another. Yadriel, a trans boy, yearns to join the line of brujos but faces misunderstandings and a lack of acceptance from those in charge. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Yadriel and his cousin and best friend Maritza conspire to perform the ritual that will allow Yadriel to step into his role: he hopes that once his family sees that he was blessed as a brujo by the goddess of death, they'll accept the truth about who he is. After the secret ceremony, in an attempt to help the brujos with their investigation of a mysterious disappearance, Yadriel accidentally summons the spirit of Julian Diaz, ⬇️ 10mo
UnabridgedPod a troublemaker at his school.

Now, he and Maritza have to help Julian accept his death so they can free his spirit; they're still trying to help with the investigation; and they have to continue to keep Yadriel's secret until the best time to reveal what happened.⠀⬇️
10mo
UnabridgedPod These characters are so vivid, and Thomas provides a sense that this magical world really could exist alongside our own. He beautifully describes the traditions of Yadriel's family, and he shows the love Yadriel has for his dad, his brother, and his deceased mother (the only one who truly understood him. I felt powerfully the way he yearns for this family's acceptance and, beyond that, their approval. ⬇️ 10mo

UnabridgedPod This is one of those books that's tough to describe because its magic goes beyond a list of characters or a description of what happens. The things that make it beautiful lie in the storytelling and the vivid sense of Yadriel's character. 10mo
Hooked_on_books I loved this one. The audio is also really well done. 10mo

After everyone find out that one of their relatives has died, all the brujos and brujas (Brujo means men who can talk to the dead and lead them to peace, and bruja means women who had the power to heal others) try to find the dead body. Yadriel asks his father to let him go with the others, only for his father to deny Yadriel's request, refusing to accept Yadriel as a man and a brujo, which causes conflict between the family members.

The author's choice of words and language in my opinion, is amazing. Yadriel, the main character, constantly gets pushed to the side and is looked down on for being a trans man and not having any powers to help his family. The writing really makes you feel as if you're experiencing the amount of grief Yadriel was experiencing. Also, since the book takes place in Mexico, words that's in Spanish.

As soon as I finished this book, I restarted the audio with my husband because he wanted to listen too after overhearing a few scenes. He's a very tactile person and wanted to try Takis after Julian got excited about them in the book. Up next are chicharrones.

TiminCalifornia Takis are too much for me but they are ubiquitous in the snack aisles around here. I must be in the minority! 10mo
Kenyazero @TiminCalifornia This flavor is pretty intense! It's overly salty and very lime-y. I can see it being too much. For some reason, I'm really liking it, but I couldn't do it without having water on hand 10mo

Wow, this YA book was so fun, refreshing and LGBTQ+ positive. There was so much to focus on - trans acceptance in a community and family, new love, supernatural ghosts and gods, magic, and two missing persons/murder mysteries! Never a dull moment! The final outcome did feel a little rushed and somewhat predictable, but it was still entertaining to read and well written. And such amazing, wholesome characters you will root for till the very end!

Loved it. Plain and simple. I think it was a great introduction to Chicano culture and the LGBTQ+ community. This is meant for young teens and I feel it gave a realistic yet not graphic reality that many LGBTQ+ members face regardless of their heritage and culture. I wish there was more depth given, to the story as a whole, however I can see how hard it would be to do when its set over three nights and there is a lot of plot to describe first.

Yadriel is a trans boy who is determined to prove to his traditional Latinx family that he has what it takes to be a brujx (brujo) despite what their traditions say.

This story was packed with great characters and scenery but it delves deeper than the superficial and highlights that we don‘t always know what someone is going through or what their life is like, so basically don‘t judge a book by its cover 😉.

Aiden Thomas had an excellent story to tell in this book. A wonderful story about self-acceptance, family, friendship, and love. Of course the magic and adventure add to the fun as well! The story could have benefited from a first person or omniscient narration where we got to go deeper into these characters. The vast majority of this story is dialogue and it misses out on really bringing us along on the emotional journeys of the characters.

From reading the reviews, it has an amazing plot and good character development, including good LGBTQ+ representation and romance. It's also said that it talks about heavy topics in society. In Yadriel‘s Latinx community, there‘s a strict division of power according to gender: brujos help souls move on & brujas heal. When Yadriel comes out as trans, he‘s denied his initiation ceremony & access to his powers. To prove himself, he must help an accidentally-found spirit cross over & solve his cousin‘s murder.

Romantic & progressive with a fairly complex (yet 100% predictable) villain. Two strong messages ring through the narrative: 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: First, “greed & hurt corrupt.” And second, *every* community has a responsibility to “heal those who suffer & guide those who are lost.” 13mo
