Nightfall
Nightfall | Jake Halpern, Peter Kujawinski
The dark will bring your worst nightmares to light in this gripping and eerie survival story, perfect for fans of James Dashner and Neil Gaiman. On Marins island, sunrise doesnt come every twenty-four hoursit comes every twenty-eight years. Now the sun is just a sliver of light on the horizon. The weather is turning cold and the shadows are growing long.Because sunset triggers the tide to roll out hundreds of miles, the islanders are frantically preparing to sail south, where they will wait out the long Night.Marin and her twin brother, Kana, help their anxious parents ready the house for departure. Locks must be taken off doors. Furniture must be arranged. Tables must be set. The rituals are puzzlingbizarre, evenbut none of the adults in town will discuss why it has to be done this way.Just as the ships are about to sail, a teenage boy goes missingthe twins friend Line. Marin and Kana are the only ones who know the truth about where Lines gone, and the only way to rescue him is by doing it themselves. But Night is falling. Their island is changing. And it may already be too late. From the Hardcover edition.

First the good is that the premise was interesting and it had a creepy atomosphere to it as I had hoped. Then i don't even know what the heck just happened. So many unanswered questions! There was a big buildup to what happens on the island during night. Weird things go on but never any answers. Then it just ended. If it would have spread out over a couple of books I think it could have been great. Unfortunately it just wasn't and was frustrating.

3✨ The ending was really sudden for a tense book. Throughout the book I‘m not sure I completely knew what was happening. However, I predicted some big reveals. I liked the danger to keep me reading. Read for #lmpbc

Pickpick

I‘m not sure what to say about this book. It‘s not the best I‘ve ever read but the writing and suspense were well done, which is why I gave it the rating I did and made it an overall pick. I could have used an inset story to explain exactly the who, what, where origins of the monsters.

Quick read. The audiobook was a decent background while doing other tasks. It's best not to think too deeply about this one. It's an interesting premise, but the story falls apart under any scrutiny.

I finished this one amid the odor of algal bloom funneling up the canyon from the coast, which went well with a story about eerie things happening on an island.

Book 5 of #bookspinbonanza (book 4 is in progress)

On Marin's island of Bliss the sun cycle lasts for 14 years. As the dark times approach the villagers set sail to ride out the Night in the Desert Lands. When 3 teens are left behind they discover the real reason their people leave in times of Darkness. They may be the only people left on the island but they're not alone. They're being hunted by things that go bump in the night.

14 days of day and then 14 days of night....just as the ships are about to leave, a boy goes missing. Marin and Karin look for their friend and ended up getting left behind. They have no idea what to do until they find a note that says “HIDE”. This book didn‘t hit the mark for me. There was a lot of unanswered questions.

The premise of the book is realy interesting, but the execution is very insipid. There are quite a few essential plot holes and no character development. The beginning was creepy and set a great atmosphere, but as the story advances, there is little to no explanation for a lot of things, the main characters take a lot of silly decisions and the plot twist falls flat. It is a book that feels unfinished. It was quite a disappointment.

Sorry for spamming everyone with reviews, haven't been on in awhile and left a bunch of books in my reading pile. This was a bookclub pick and it had so much potential, great atmospheric creepy build yet I was expecting something more sinister to go with the rituals. Unique idea but didn't pull it off in my opinion. 3 generous stars #2016read #bookclubpick

The book has an interesting premise - long Days that last for years followed by long Nights that last for years. All the odd little rituals that only one character questions made it feel a little like The Village. There's not a lot of character development and it feels a bit like the story starts about a quarter of the way through, as if we're missing the backstory or at least an introduction. Having two writers may explain some of the problems.

BekahB I tried to listen to this on audiobook, but I couldn't get through it. I may eventually check the physical book out from the library so I can at least try to finish it. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @BekahB At least with an audiobook you could do your laundry or something. I prefer to finish books, otherwise this is one I might not have. It didn't take very long to read though so there's that. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @BekahB It was kind of hard to get through as a book. It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. It has a very interesting premise but somewhere along the way it lost my attention. It's the right book for someone but when I read it, it wasn't the right one for me. 8y

So APL came through for me again with two more of the books I put on hold. I'm going to read Nightfall first because it's intrigued me for awhile so I need to get it out of the way so I can read Riverkeep. This putting books on hold at the library business is going to be dangerous.

Librarygal08 Loved NightFall 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Librarygirl88 I had a hard time with this one. I was prepared to like it, and the premise was good. It just didn't do it for me and I don't know why. 8y
Librarygal08 @jpmcwisemorgan They had such a unique and creative concept but they let it fall a little flat and the ending left so much unanswered and it needs a 2nd book I think but I was really into it until the end 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Librarygirl88 I thought it might be because it was two people writing and they hadn't found their rhythm yet. 8y

This was wonderfully creepy but a couple of plot holes and a lack of investment in the characters earned this a 3/5.

This is another one of those books that sounded awesome and I was kind of into it but then I lost focus and interest on it. I'm gonna try to pick it back up soon and give it a second chance. It had some good aspects
