Scary Stories 3
Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones | Alvin Schwartz
22 posts | 44 read | 7 to read
Get Ready to be Spooked! It was eleven o'clock at night. Peter was in bed on the second floor of the old house where he lived alone. It had gotten so chilly, he went downstairs to turn up the heat. As Peter was on his way back to bed, a black dog ran down the stairs. "Where did you come from?" Peter said. He had never seen the dog before. . . . Welcome to the frightening world of Scary Stories, a collection of folklorist Alvin Schwartz's most alarming tales of horror, dark revenge, and supernatural events of all time, with spine-tingling illustrations by renowned artist Brett Helquist.

This was by far the scariest of the three books. There were a few of these stories that I remembered scaring me as a child and still freaked me out a little now. This book is one that scares me for #ScaryScavengerHunt

Not my favorite collection but definitely something for all fans in this one. Something I always loved about these books were the notes and sources. I remember finding books through my library that were noted in Schwartz's bibliography as well! 😁

this was the one that scared me the most as a child. It's in book 3 of the series and it's called Harold. unlike the other stories which can be a bit corny at times this one seem to be a bit more graphic and in my opinion was more scary than most of the other stories.
What was yours?

jackilynn The Red Spot was always the one that freaked me out the most. I think my fear of spiders is a result of this story lol 5y
BeansPage @jackilynn OMG that one is unnerving!!! 5y
BookwormAHN The Babysitter used to freak me out. It seemed to plausible. And thanks to High Beams I always check my backseat before I get in the car 👻 5y

BeansPage @BookwormAHN I totally check my backseat too! Every time I get in and especially if it's dark! 5y
inthegreensandblues Harold is definitely one of the scariest ones! I was also disturbed by The Drum (Vol. 2). Mother leaving is one thing but the "new mother" - wtf?! ? 5y
inthegreensandblues Oh yeah and I also have always remembered High Beams and checked the backseat! 5y
inthegreensandblues On this current read, I enjoyedThe Guests (Vol. 1) than I remember as a kid. Maybe because I've read more fantasy now and like things like weird time slips and/or parallel universe, as well as what we now might "glitch in the matrix." 5y
inthegreensandblues I also want to share: The Bed By the Window is super depressing and I thought that when I was a kid too. 😢 5y
SpiderCrafts The Vol. 1 "Me Tie Dough-ty Walker!" was the strangest and scariest for me. ? Imagining the weird tension of the dog suddenly singing back, while the boy panics and tries to keep things quietly hidden from the haunted horror approaching. 5y

A neat look at the new Brett Helquist illustrations, however as a cuter take on this series 😸 being well known for the spooks of Stephen Gammell. This reminds me of the YTV show Freaky Stories, covering Sam's New Pet and others from Scary Stories.

A bit randomly for thoughts, I took out the library reprint of Alvin's Scary Stories, now with another illustrator, Brett Helquist. Still fairly good, but meh 👻 the new kids aren't getting our Gammell spooking, since the 80s. 💀 For the fans of Stephen Gammell's spook-fest style; there is a tribute book out there to watch for, called Corpse Cold.

#AudioBook My Dad picked this up at a yard sale, when I was a kid, yet to find it contained a basic Halloween sounds tape. 😄 That memory has me looking them up on YouTube. https://youtu.be/qDmce0e0ce4 #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

I was stumped by today's prompt until I spotted this little book I grabbed for $1 from The Strand a while ago for nostalgia's sake. I hoped a scary story about wolves might be included and would you believe I found one!
"The Wolf Girl"- about a girl who is stolen by wolves at childbirth and grows up with them in the wild.... These stories are not as scary as I remember them being but the pictures are! ?

Reviewsbylola Yeah that's creepy af. I remember checking these out of the school library all the time! 7y
Zelma I used to have the first 2 volumes and they scared the crap out of me. 😱 7y
Cinfhen Oh wow! Those illustrations are night terror inducing 😱😱😱 7y
readinginthedark These are so creepy, but I loved them when I was young! 7y
BekahB I both loved and was terrified as a kid by these books with the original Stephen Gammell illustrations! 7y

StacksNShelves Too bad the new editions don't use these illustrations. ☹️ 7y
vivastory @StacksNShelves I know. I've never even bothered looking at the new illustrations. There's no way they'd be nearly as great as the originals. 7y
StacksNShelves @vivastory The illustrations were done by Brett Helquist, the guy who did the illustrations for The Series of Unfortunate Events. They look nice but nowhere near as scary or grotesque as the Stephen Gammell illustrations. 😞 7y
