My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead
My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead: Great Love Stories, from Chekhov to Munro | Jeffrey Eugenides
"When it comes to love, there are a million theories to explain it. But when it comes to love stories, things are simpler. A love story can never be about full possession. Love stories depend on disappointment, on unequal births and feuding families, on matrimonial boredom and at least one cold heart. Love stories, nearly without exception, give love a bad name . . . . It is perhaps only in reading a love story (or in writing one) that we can simultaneously partake of the ecstasy and agony of being in love without paying a crippling emotional price. I offer this book, then, as a cure for lovesickness and an antidote to adultery. Read these love stories in the safety of your single bed. Let everybody else suffer."Jeffrey Eugenides, from the introduction to My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead All proceeds from My Mistress's Sparrow is Dead will go directly to fund the free youth writing programs offered by 826 Chicago. 826 Chicago is part of the network of seven writing centers across the United States affiliated with 826 National, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Pickpick

A wonderful collection of short stories, some varying in quality but all with a lot to offer. Not a typical “love story” situation but so is to be expected with Eugenides.

Favorites— Dirty Wedding by Denis Johnson, Natasha by David Bezmozgis, Spring in Fialta by Vladimir Nobokov, and How to be an Other Woman by Lorrie Moore.

Easy leash favorite— The Hitchhiking Game by Milan Kundera (incredibly rapey and male gazey in a non-self aware way)

Barbara gave me this short story anthology for Christmas, and I‘m reading four a month. Here are my thoughts on the first four.

The Brodkey was boring (and long), so not the best start, but I loved the Chekhov! There was a pleasant vitality to it. I did not understand the Paley. Maybe it was timing or maybe it is just over my head. I read the Faulkner in school, but I have much more appreciation for the story of a sad old single person at 42. 😂

BarbaraBB What a cool way to read it! I am looking forward to your thoughts on Kundera and Trevor! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yeah, I hadn‘t thought of reading anthologies this way before, but it‘s working for me so far. Thank you for the gift!! 😘😘 2y
GondorGirl This is such a cool way of reviewing the stories- I might have to steal it! 2y

I stumbled across this at the library. Looks fantastic. The cover!

Leniverse That's a brilliant cover! Great title too. I had to look up the contents to see if there was a title story. But no, the title is from a more than 2000 year poem by Gaius Catullus. (I was a bit surprised to see The Dead by James Joyce in there. I never saw that as a love story.) 7y
vivastory @Leniverse I love Catullus. I was very surprised by many of the selections. Should be great. 7y
Hobbinol When I was in school, we had the best time discussing Catullus... good times. 7y

vivastory @Hobbinol No one excelled more at insults than the great Latin poets, especially Martial & Catullus. 7y
ValerieAndBooks I have this book, but with a different cover. Very well done anthology, IMO! 7y
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks it looks like a very interesting selection. 7y

I'm excited to start this collection of "great love stories, from Chekhov to Munro" but I'm going to *try to slow down and take my time finishing it, reading only one story every couple days instead of wolfing it down in one sitting. Unlike these innocent cookies, which are already gone, ten minutes later ???

Moray_Reads Beautiful book! 7y
Jokila Isn't it?! 😍 @Moray_Reads there's at least two other editions I've seen and this one is my favorite! 7y

@TheNextBook informed me she was #keepingitshort by reading a short story after every book and I love the idea so much, I'm doing it too! I'm starting with this one, which has been on my shelf about five years.

TheNextBook Yes!!!! Let me know how you like this one! I'm glad you're on board! I really need to step up my short story game! #keepingitshort 7y
Kimzey I like that plan also! 👍🏼 7y

#recommendsday : This love story collection, edited by Eugenides, is fantastic. Not sappy happily-ever-after stories, because real love stories can be messy and complicated. Authors range from Chekhov to Raymond Carver to Alice Munro. Plus there's the creepily classic "A Rose for Emily" by Faulkner.

brendanmleonard Love "A Rose for Emily!" 8y
ValerieAndBooks @brendanmleonard I do too, which is why I just had to mention it 😊. A really good mix in this collection. Most short story anthologies have maybe only 10% I like -- but this one is an exception; I think Eugenides curated this well. 8y
