“It is helpful to know the proper way to behave, so one can decide whether or not to be proper.”
In "Ella Enchanted," Ella is a kind girl who has a magical problem: she must always obey anyone who tells her to do something! Join her on an exciting adventure as she learns to stand up for herself, make her own choices, and discover the true meaning of bravery and friendship. This enchanting tale will take you to a world of magic, fun, and important lessons! My kids would love it!
"Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine is a charming retelling of the Cinderella tale, infused with wit and depth. The story follows Ella, who is cursed with obedience, making her struggle against societal expectations and her own desires. The themes of empowerment and the importance of choice resonate throughout, making it a delightful read for both children and adults.
“You can't be brave if you've only had wonderful things happen to you.“
In the classroom, this book could be used for discussions about themes like self-empowerment, personal choice, and the importance of standing up against societal expectations. It can also lead to engaging activities where students explore character development and plot structure through creative writing or storytelling projects.
This book is a fantasy novel published in 1997 by Gail Carson Levine, which won the Newbery Honor Award. This imaginative retelling of Cinderella follows Ella, who is cursed with the gift of obedience, making her comply with any command given to her. As she navigates her challenges, including finding her own voice and breaking free from the curse, Ella's journey becomes one of self-discovery and empowerment.
I liked this retelling of Cinderella so much more as I read it with my kids. The emphasis is on standing up for yourself & learning the meaning of sacrificial love & true friendship. I think it‘s a great improvement from the original story that it doesn't rely on a quick fairy godmother fix to solve every problem. Ella is clever & funny & is willing to try & solve her own problems. I love how her best friend Char knows who she truly is & loves her

Wrestling with the blessing and curse of obedience, protagonist Ella navigates the manipulation of the greedy and the kindness of the compassionate as she seeks to break the spell upon her. Ella is ultimately the individual to break her curse, demonstrating to readers the agency and power inside every individual to overcome difficulty, regardless of whether or not they are responsible for the problem itself. Really enjoyed this re-read.
I know that they have made a movie for this story, I think this would be a great story to read to children in the upper elementary age because I bet a lot of them have some background knowledge on the movie
The story follows Ella a young girl who was cursed with obedience by a misguided fairy named Lucinda. This curse forces Ella to obey any direct command given to her, no matter the consequences. As a result, Ella's life becomes increasingly difficult as she navigates her obedience and strives for freedom.
This fairy tale retelling answers the burning question—why was Cinderella so…obedient? Perhaps when she was born, a wickedly well-meaning fairy gave her the “gift” of doing what she‘s told. Nevertheless, this Ella is fierce, strong-willed, and will stop at nothing to break her curse. The world-building, the romance, and THIS HEROINE make this book an all-time favorite that remains as immersive, as enjoyable, and yes, as enchanting a read as ever!

A captivating retelling of the Cinderella story with a strong heroine and many quite awful support characters. I initially thought the audiobook was narrated by a child, but it is actually just a very childlike voice. Quite appropriate to the story. Trix and I thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to watching the film.
I know most read this when they were children, but I missed it somehow. What a wonderful retelling of Cinderella. I enjoyed Ella, her persistence and strength.
At first the narrator was shocking (not used to a childlike voice) but as I got used to it, and it seemed very fitting.
Another childhood favorite, we watch another young woman fight her own unique battles. While this story lacks any violence or action, there is just as much battle for justice and heroism as any tale of knighta. seeing Ellas personality come into her adventures is one of my favorite parts, as she fights her own curse in unique ways. A unique retelling of a classic fairytale.

Such a cute funny movie with a very young Anne Hathaway ❤
I‘ve watched the movie more times than i can count. In fact, it was a huge part of my childhood. But it was only recently that I found out it‘s an ACTUAL BOOK! 🤯
From all the modern retellings of fairytales, this author‘s twist on a classic fairytale is my favorite. The protagonist is simply wonderful. She‘s smart, tenacious and witty. You can‘t mess with this Cinderella. 🙌🏽💯
Rating: 4.5/5
Book description ⬇️
I really like how Gail Carson Levine finds new ways to tell classic fairytales. I loved Ella's spirit and strength.
This is one nostalgic reread that definitely holds up! If you like MG/YA fairy tale retellings and haven‘t read this classic, go for it.
One of my book clubs picked this for May. I haven‘t read it since I was a kid but knew I would enjoy going back to it. It‘s a delight all over again!
Book was supposed to be read for #MarchMiddleGrade readathon (YouTube) prompt-retelling (what counts is that I read it. One book less from my tbr👍). The movie adaptation is so different from the book but I enjoyed both of them. You will find some elements from the popular Cinderella story but this Ella character is more assertive and so funny in some parts. Some characters are very different like her father😠It is a cute retelling 3.4/3.5⭐️
Started the fairytale retellings prompt for #MGMarch with Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. The ending was more true to Cinderella than the movie, although I like the movie as well. I am a big fan of Anne Hathaway. #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #23 #BFC21 #MGMarch
It was alright. I read it a long time ago. One of the better retelling.
A total nostalgia read for me but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Though not quite how my childhood self remembers this story (as I was an avid watcher of the film) I‘ve nonetheless grown to admire this tale. As always Gail Levine delivers a fairytale where at its center, a young girl learns who is there for her and what strength she has inside!
Awoke today to some sad news. One of my favorite teachers from my childhood lost her battle with cancer. She is one of the teachers I can attribute my love of reading (she introduced me to Harry Potter) and one of the few I made a point to go visit whenever I stopped in the grade school for something. So many fond memories. She will be missed. ☹
#itsmyparty @LibrarianRyan happy birthday!!! Thanks for letting us celebrate with you! 🖤 my favorite litten is @DaveGreen7777 the reason that Dave is my favorite is because ever since we met on litsy he has been a constant encouragement and hype person! He always has a word of encouragement or a kind thing to say no matter the situation!
My favorite book when I was young was the tagged and I read it over and over . I just liked Ella‘s spirit.
This was a fun book, but I would of enjoyed it more if I read it when I was younger.
“I had been able to break the curse myself. I'd had to have reason enough, love enough to do it, to find the will and the strength.”
—Ella
“In that moment I found a power beyond any I'd had before, a will and a determination I would never have need if not for Lucinda, a fortitude I hadn't been able to find for a lesser cause.”
—Ella
This book is one of my all-time favorites, one of the first books I absolutely adored. The storytelling and world-building is so rich in detail. The characters have personality and are so easy to enjoy. This whole reimagining of Cinderella is outstanding; I highly recommend this one! I‘m listening to it on my favorite audiobook version and I forgot how much I enjoy this one each time I read it. 👏🏻✨💕
This is another series with decades between the two books. Both covers are very contemporary to the time they were released. And each can be read independently from each other.

Ella Enchanted is a Fantasy Fiction TL and Newbery award winner by Gail Carlson. It‘s a wonderful story about a girl who is enchanted to do whatever she is told no matter what, the journey lands her in a predicament with her true love but all in all is a happy ending. It would be great for a SR in upper elementary to middle school grades. I would utilize ESL strategy #16 and UDL strategy 2.1 linked below is a great resource for this text.
This 1997 Newberry Award Honor F novel is a must-have in every classroom library! As a child, this was the first chapter book that I picked up and could NOT put down! The reason I love this book so much is because author Gail Carson Levine takes the traditional story “Cinderella” and adds a number of mythical creatures including fairies, ogres, and giants to add a fun twist to a story that we all know so well. #LAE3414sp19
A winning combination of memorable characters and a charming setting (a medieval realm complete with centaurs, ogres, giants, gnomes, & elves) make up for the novel‘s few shortcomings. Overall a pick.
