The Red Lotus
The Red Lotus: A Novel | Chris Bohjalian
"From the New York Times bestselling author of The Flight Attendant comes a twisting story of love and deceit: an American man vanishes from a rural road in Vietnam and his girlfriend, an ER doctor trained in deductive reasoning, follows a path that leads her home to the very hospital where they first met. Alexis and Austen met on a Saturday night. Not in a bar, but instead in the emergency room where Alexis sutured a bullet wound in Austen's arm. Six months later, on the brink of falling in love, they travel to Vietnam on a bicycling tour so that Austen can show her his passion for cycling and so that he can pay his respects to the place where his father and uncle fought in the war. But as Alexis sips white wine and waits at the hotel for Austen to return from his solo ride, two men emerge from the tall grass and Austen vanishes into thin air. The only clues he leaves behind are two bright yellow energy gels dropped in the dirt road. As Alexis grapples with this bewildering loss, navigating the FBI, Austen's prickly family, and her colleagues at the hospital, Alexis uncovers a series of strange lies that force her to wonder: Where did Austen go? Why did he really bring her to Vietnam? And how much danger has he left her in? Set amid the adrenaline-fueled world of the emergency room, The Red Lotus is a fascinating story of those who dedicate their lives to saving people, and those who instead peddle death to the highest bidder."--

My kiddo wanted to go shopping with a friend, but neither of them drive, so I get to sit in the car and read my book while they shop. I'm loving this one so far.

I finished this book over the course of 24 hours🎧It was the right blend of real science, world history, a strong female character & some good ole fashion detective work that kept me riveted. An ER doctor meets a cute guy one evening when he‘s brought into the ER with a gun shot wound. He too works at the same hospital - life is good 😁When he suggests a bike trip in Vietnam, she readily agrees but soon everything goes horribly wrong. #AAM

Soubhiville This was the first Pandemic adjacent book I read during COVID. I thought it was pretty good too. Glad you liked it! 2y

Great thriller/mystery that I didn't want to stop reading once I started. 💚

The descriptions of Vietnam were beautifully done and made me want to visit some day.

A woman on vacation with her boyfriend ends up getting tangled up in a sinister plot when she starts asking too many questions about why her boyfriend disappeared.

Crazeedi I've been wondering about this one. I've liked and then not liked books I've read by him. 3y
Addison_Reads @Crazeedi This is my first read of his. I'll have to be selective if I pick others to try. 3y

Mehso-so

This was a good book and I enjoyed the suspense and storyline but I wanted to know more about the characters and what really made them.
Ultimately I was left feeling exhausted because if the fast pace and just a lot of questions.

I‘m a Bohjalian fan and this was a great story. The suspense is tight, twists felt legit, and the characters are compelling. Parts of it are set in Vietnam, which made me visualize all the Anthony Bourdain episodes filmed there. But it‘s also gritty NYC and very science / medical. That all blended into something pretty unputdownable even though I was busy! I gave it 3.5 stars.

Probably 3.5/5 stars....page turning, twists and turns, but reading about a possible pandemic wasn‘t the escapism reading I was looking for in this one. I like this author and read a few of his books, but this lacked the shock and awe of Midwives.

Is life crazier than fiction? I‘m not sure anymore. It‘s scary that our worst fears might actually become reality. I think that‘s why I could just read this book with my usual ease. The author is wonderfully talented and eloquent with his use of words. I know whenever I open one of his books I will be impressed by the extent of his research and imagination.

I liked it and thrillers are NOT my fave genre. And the subject matter would/might be off-putting considering current times: rats, plague, etc. but this had the personable likeable-enough characters and the plot-pacing was on point.

Gobsmacked and grateful. Just in, the New York Times review of THE RED LOTUS: “Terrific. . . [An] elegant noose of a plot. . . As suspenseful as it is, The Red Lotus is also unexpectedly moving – about friendship, about the connections between people and, most of all, about the love of parents for children and of children for parents. Bohjalian is a writer with a big heart and deep compassion for his characters.” My deepest thanks to Sarah Lyall.

A #throwbackThursday to a year ago, when I was researching THE RED LOTUS, my March 2020 thriller about an ER doc whose boyfriend disappears on a bike tour in Vietnam -- and how so much that he told her was a lie.

I really liked this story and wanted more at the end. I really liked Alexis and her persistence in finding out what happened to her boyfriend Austin. As I was reading, I could imagine the author riding the roads of Vietnam and that expertise comes through the narrative. I hope the rest about rats and diseases is more fictional (even though I know it‘s true).

Soubhiville I can‘t wait to read this! 4y

Here, ER doctor Alexis falls for Austin after cleaning up a bullet wound in his arm, and six months later they're taking a bicycle trip through Vietnam. Then he vanishes, leaving Alexis wondering how much danger she's in.”

You know you have done your job as a novelist, when you scare the scientist fact-checking your next thriller. This was one of her comments when she read a draft of THE RED LOTUS — at bookstores and libraries (well, everywhere) on March 17.

The story is partially a love story, thriller & mystery. Chris Bohjalian is one of the most gifted, most diverse writers along with being well researched. This story was thrilling, fast paced and the description of Vietnam was breath taking! Chris Bohjalian's stories are individual jewels waiting to be discovered and read. Add this to your reading list in Spring 2020! Thank you #Netgalley for the ARC!

Graciouswarriorprincess Thanks @Suet624. I'm on a computer and I tried to tag him. Don't know why the tag didn't work. :) 5y
