Last Days of Summer (Anniversary)
Last Days of Summer (Anniversary) | Steve Kluger
23 posts | 20 read | 13 to read
Last Days of Summer is the story of Joey Margolis, neighborhood punching bag, growing up goofy and mostly fatherless in Brooklyn in the early 1940s. A boy looking for a hero, Joey decides to latch on to Charlie Banks, the all-star third baseman for the New York Giants. But Joey's chosen champion doesn't exactly welcome the extreme attention of a persistent young fan with an overactive imagination. Then again, this strange, needy kid might be exactly what Banks needs.

Today was unexpectedly hectic but mostly in a good way. And then this happened. #summersunspecial

Two Littens have tagged me for the #MidYearBookFreakOut and believe me I‘ll get to it. But not today!

Also, to close the loop on #20in4 I didn‘t finish the book as I wanted, but I made progress on it and others.

Bookwormjillk Glad the rain stopped for you! We‘re going tomorrow. Go Nats! 9mo

This book hurts me every dang time. I just love how well you get to know the characters, especially since the book is primarily told through letters. Just a triumph. #epistolaryfiction #historicalfiction

My review is basically my picture. 😂😭 I‘m not sure if it comes across but I‘m still crying over this book. It was super sweet and cute and then it got too real. Very few books do this to me, but Kluger has done it twice. He does coming of age almost too well, and the characters quickly become part of your friends and family. Highly recommended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Last Days of Summer I discovered this gem when I was picking up books for a trip to NY in 2006 at Sam's Club. It sat on my shelf for about 2 years.

I read this every summer. You definitely have to suspend belief but I find it funny, sad, poignant, and definitely worth reading

I think this book is underrated, but definitely a favorite.

"I will not pee in the reservoir. I will not pee in the reservoir." Mostly funny, sometimes sad, always readable book in diary/letter form about a young boy growing up in the Bronx. Lots of baseball, and the occasional getting caught peeing in the reservoir. I think of baseball as men waving sticks while wearing long underwear, & I loved this book. All thumbs up. ? #junetunz #americankids @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Sounds like a great summer read 🤘🏼😎 7y
Tertubotn It is! That's how I read it the first time, schlepped it with me on vacation in the great state of Michigan. Easy to dip into, and most chapters pretty short. 🌞 7y

Loved this! It took me a couple of pages to get used to the writing style but then couldn't put it down. Nostalgic, very funny, and emotional!

This sweet little story is told through letters, postcards, notes, telegrams, news stories, report cards, matchbox covers, and more. It's a hilarious and heart-warming tale of growing up Jewish in America before and during WWII with lots of historical references, hollywood celebs, and baseball. #readjanuary

I'm not normally one to read books about baseball but Joey was one of the funniest #childprotagonists I've ever read. Plus the book was about more than the great American pastime. And it was funny, but it was also sad. As life tends to be. #photoadaynov16

The writing in this under-hyped epistolary novel is delightful: Parents comments: "As usual I am very proud of Joey's grades. I too was unaware that Dolley Madison was a Lesbian. I thought they were all Protestants." "The only thing I know about Moses is him coming down from the mountain with the commandments and saying 'The good news is I got him down to 10. The bad news is adultery is still in.'" #augustphotochallenge

This #funphotofriday #funfridayphoto book is hilarious, and it made me ugly cry. Written in epistolary form, it relays the story of a young Jewish boy growing up in NY during 1940 and his coming of age and correspondence w/a NY Giants baseball player. Kluger gets the voices absolutely perfect. Everyone on whom I've forced it upon LOVES this book. You will too. (I may bring it back on most underrated day.)
