Two Serious Ladies
Two Serious Ladies: A Novel | Jane Bowles
The only novel by avant-garde literary star Jane Bowles, the highly influential wife of legendary writer Paul Bowles, Two Serious Ladies is a modernist cult classic, mysterious, profound, anarchic, and funny, that follows two "respectable" women as they descend into debaucheryupdated with an introduction by Claire Messud, bestselling author of The Emperor's Children and The Woman Upstairs.Christina Goering, eccentric and adventurous, and Frieda Copperfield, anxious but enterprising, are two serious ladies who want to live outside of themselves. Old friends, each will take a surprising path in search of salvation: during a visit to Panama, Mrs. Copperfield abandons her husband, finding solace in a relationship with a teenage prostitute; while Miss Goering, a wealthy spinster, pursues sainthood via sordid encounters with the basest of men. At the end the two women meet again, each radically altered by her experience.

#beginswith #two I read this book years ago and loved it ! I looked for my copy, couldn‘t find it .Internet photo ,but for those who love #Virago books , I remember they published an edition of this .

LeahBergen I have a paperback of this that‘s been sitting unread on my shelves for years. 😬 I love this vintage cover! 2y
Leftcoastzen @LeahBergen I think you would like it .😄I‘d probably be horrified if I figured out what book around here I‘ve had the longest & haven‘t read. 2y

“Mrs Copperfield hated to know what was around her, because it always turned out to be even stranger than she had feared.”

This 1943 classic modernist novel by a queer author is stranger than I had expected, and also funnier. I‘m still not sure I understand what it was about—Women breaking out of society‘s cage? Women conquering their fears?—but it‘s never boring. Also, I enjoyed the prose and the oddball characters. #puzzling #LGBTQ

CarolynM This one was strongly recommended to me years ago. I have a copy but I've never gotten around to it. You've revived my interest🙂 3y

Now, with Arnold and his friends nothing ever really begins or finishes. They‘re like fish in dirty water to me. If life don‘t please them one way and nobody likes them one place, then they go someplace else. They aim to please and be pleased; that‘s why it‘s so easy to come and bop them on the head from behind, because they‘ve never done any serious hating in their lives.

“You can‘t possibly have any respect for me, but that doesn‘t make any difference because I have the utmost respect for you. I heard my husband say that you had a religious nature one day, and we almost had a very bad fight. Of course he is crazy to say that. You are gloriously unpredictable and you are afraid of no one but yourself. I hate religion in other people.”

rubyslippersreads This picture reminds me of a rather depressed Mrs. Maisel. 3y
Lindy @rubyslippersreads Mrs Copperfield starts out as an unhappy person in this novel. (I don‘t know who did the cover illustration.) 3y

“I have gone to pieces, which is a thing I‘ve wanted to do for years. I know I am as guilty as I can be, but I have my happiness, which I guard like a wolf, and I have authority now and a certain amount of daring, which, if you remember correctly, I never had before.“

Remembering Jane Bowles on her birthday.

#5 Magers and Quinn Booksellers. The bookstore scene in Minneapolis is an embarrassment of riches, but Magers and Quinn is the only one I have a mug for. So they win.

Well this was a bit of a strange and uneven read, but apparently Bowles' only novel is considered a modern classic. Two women who subvert societal expectations, some witty prose, but long stretches of story to a puzzling end. (Thanks to @Bookchipmunk for sending it my way regardless!)

Reviewsbylola I love the cover but I‘m not convinced I would like the book. 6y

One of my favorite parts of pet sitting is picking out the books I‘m taking with me. I wanted to get some exchanges and swaps in the mix this weekend. I added this very old retired library book “Two Serious Ladies” because I‘ve been curious about it for a long time. I may not start all of them because I do have to play with puppies and kitties too. 😻#bestjobever

Beck9lol @Sharpeipup I will start it this weekend so I'll definitely let you know. 😁 6y

Looking for a quirky and hilarious read? Try Two Serious Ladies by our #WriterCrush Jane Bowles! Two acquaintances who conform to strict roles in society start making unusual choices that lead them to debauchery! From the outside, it seems as if these women are becoming immoral and possibly mad, but they are actually gaining control of their lives in nuanced ways and living, at last, the way they have always wanted. #wcw https://buff.ly/2E5SAVO

Apparently because one classic at a time isn't enough for me, I have also started Two Serious Ladies, Bowles' only novel.
On that note, what other writers do you know who never wrote a second novel?

2BR02B Sylvia Path, JD Salinger, Ralph Ellison, John Kennedy Toole, Margaret Mitchell... 6y
2BR02B And Emily Bronte, of course. 6y

I most definitely bought this book for the cover and the introduction by Claire Messud but I am having such a hard time getting into this! I am halfway through but keep putting it down, so now I feel as though I should start over. Does anyone else have this issue with books they want to read but really struggle through...?

A 1943 novel about two respectable women who "descend into debauchery". One of them dumps her husband for a teenage prostitute and the other, a spinster, takes up with "the basest of men". Sounds titillating, doesn't it? ?

"Now for a little spot of gin to chase my troubles away. There just isn't any other way that's as good." This is such a wonderful weird book, and it calls for a weird old cocktail: Pink Gin. Swirl a few drops of Angostura bitters into a chilled glass. Add 2 oz gin & lemon peel. Cheers, Mrs. Bowles.
