This one will soon be in middle school. What?! He‘s the most precious kid, I swear. I escaped to read outside, and few minutes later, he and little bro came out with their current reads. 🤍

Mr. Popper adopts a couple penguins and ends up with a whole troupe of performers. This is very cute, even if it had a few parts that were unbelievable moments for the characters. My 7yo had several uncontrollable fits of laughter, so we had fun taking turns reading it to each other.
Turns out almost all the dialogue in the musical production of this that I was just in was taken straight from the text, which wasn't trippy at all for me. Mrs. Popper supremacy forever! #childrenslit #classics
Mr. Popper‘s Penguins is fun-filled, creative, and allows the reader to imagine what life would be like caring for a penguin. I would love to hang out with Mr. Popper. He seems like a pretty cool dude. Penguins in the fridge = awesome!
I rather enjoyed this book... more from seeing it through my son's (6) eyes than for the content itself. My adult perspective stole the magic from it and instead had me critiquing a marriage where the wife is fine with the husband leaving spontaneously for a couple of years, and worried about providing for the family financially in other portions. Based on my kiddos experience bet I would have enjoyed it more in my younger days.
Kids love it. A little too simple for mom. Would be good for a junior reader.
Funny. I did prefer the movie because this took me a bit to get into.

This book was fun and ridiculous. At this time I don't plan to read the rest of the series, but it would be fun to read with kids.

Thank you so much for the amazing books and stuff. I love Mr. Poppers Penguins, and dont have a copy. This may have to be a read aloud this winter.
I hadn't read this children's classic in many a year. It's fun and cute but quite implausible. Still, I can see the penguin antics appealing to younger readers, even if the story honestly doesn't make a lot of sense haha
Also, I got this copy as a library discard back in 1999, where it had been on the shelves since its publication in 1938!
I overcame my lifelong fear of birds for this week‘s episode of my podcast! (Even though — let‘s be honest — penguins are a very cute exception to my fear.) On Episode 105, author Swati Teerdhala joins me for a conversation about Newbery Honor-winning Mr. Popper‘s Penguins! We talk about the main character‘s wanderlust, cancel culture, and so much more. Link to listen in bio! 🐧❄️
Day 20 of a book from my shelves with random thoughts - I keep forgetting about this little project, so it's been a few days!! Today's book is a battered copy of a classic children's story. It's a bit absurd, but SO much fun, and it's the kind of absurdity that makes children go off into piles of giggles. Lawson's illustrations add so much to the tale as well. It's not my favorite ending to a book, but it works & it's all good fun.
A tale of two cities, of mice and men, treasure island, the sound and the fury, crime and punishment, 1984, a farewell to arms, catcher in the rye, pride and prejudice, great expectations, as I lay dying. Not too sure about the rest. #canyounamethefamousbooks
This HF Young Reader's Choice Award and Newbery Honor Winner is a tale about a family man, Mr. Popper. One day, while the family is listening to the radio, they hear from a mysterious adventurer who promises them a surprise. Soon they receive a penguin and name him Captain Cook. Captain Cook's health begins to fail so they get him a companion, a female penguin named Greta. Not long after the couple has 10 baby penguins and a lot of mouths to feed.
A cute story about a man who is extremely interested in polar expeditions and ends up being sent a penguin as a gift! 😳 There are those sneaky facts that end up being thrown into children's books and a heartwarming ending! The perfect book for quarantine! #quarantinereads #mountTBR #middlegrade
Absolutely nothing I've picked up for the last few days has been sticking. Having a hard time with my #Booked2020 book, tried a Harlan Coben book that totally put a bad taste in my mouth after 5 pages, got a short story collection going... so I'm going to try this today. 🤞 #quarantinereads #Coronapocalypse
“It seemed to him that his life would be empty if Captain Cook went away.“
This is a great book that bring human characteristics to penguins - children love talking animals!
“They solemnly lofted their flippers and waved”
I enjoyed the silliness of this tale as well as the illustrations in the book.
This book was very interesting to say the least. It has quite a funny idea to begin with, but some of the things that happen are very random. Although it is a modern fantasy tale, I found this book odd.
“Mr Popper was quite worried when he found all these changes were going to be very expensive.”
I liked how the name of the penguin was Captain Cook
I love how this story includes lots of fun illustrations. Ot was fun to flip through. Mr. Popper‘s Penguins tells the story of Mr Popper and his family. Mr. Popper is a house painter. They‘re poor and live in a small town. The setting takes place in the 1930s, which makes for a cool story.
“Now a penguin may look very strange in a living room, but a living room looks very strange to a penguin.“
This book is a classic. I remember reading this as a kid and loving it. It is fun to go along with all of their adventure and I love penguins!
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater is a piece of modern fantasy. It was written in 1938. This book is about a man who writes to the Admiral Drake and Drake ended up sending Mr. Popper a penguin. The Penguin lives with him in his house and then he ends up getting another one. They then have a bunch and put them in a circus to make money. Then penguins are then sent back to the north pole. This is a classic! I remember reading it long ago!
“Indeed, they walked to the bus line very nicely in the following line of march.”
Very cute chapter book. I like the small illustrations also to give the students a visual!
Mr. Popper‘s Penguins by Richard Atwater was published in 1938. The book is about a man, Mr.Popper, who has a strong interest in penguins and their environments. When he one day receives a penguin in the mail, he finds that he needs to make some changes to give them the cold life they need! Before you know it, he had 10 penguins in his home and he had to care for them all. He trained them and used them in a popular show throughout the community!
“Mr. Popper had read that penguins are extremely curious, and he soon found that this was true, for stepping out, the visitor began to inspect the house. Down the hall it went and into the bedrooms, with its strange, pompous little strut.“
I thought it was funny how a penguin showed up to Mr. Popper's house in a large box. He keeps the penguin in the icebox refrigerator and drills holes in it so the penguin can breathe. He takes the penguin on walks on a leash and even to the barbershop. The penguin, Greta, was sent to live with Mr. Popper and Captain Crook so the two penguins are not as lonely.
I think I would enjoy this book because it is about a house painter who tries to raise a dozen penguins in his family's home. He takes them on a nationwide circus tour to help pay to take care of them.
“In the pleasant little city of Stillwater, Mr. Popper, the house painter, was going home from work.”
I think Atwater publish a book that would be great in any classroom. Animals hold high interests in children‘s lives especially covering on how life is living with them.
Mr. Popper‘s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater published in 1983 is a classic. It‘s a story of a man and his life with 12 penguins.
“Mr. Popper had read that penguins are extremely curious, and he soon found that this was true, for stepping out, the visitor began to inspect the house. Down the hall it went and into the bedrooms, with its strange, pompous little strut.“
This modern fantasy book contains eccentric characters and preposterous situations that make a story thought to be believable, quite interesting. It contains characters that live normal lives but with an added twist of a family of penguins inside someone's house. Gives off the idea that creativity is possible, even in our own lives that we live. It also has a very exciting plot that gives a firm background and attention to detail.
This book was cute and tells the story of how one generic family got a surprising visit from penguins! I loved this book as a kid and actually made me want to keep reading. Something all kids enjoy!
I chose the quote when mrs popper said “I sometimes with you had the kind of work that lasted all year” This kinda game me an idea that his world was about to change and gave me foreshadowing about the rest of the book.
I would read this maybe early on with 2nd graders becuase they would be very interested in the fact that there‘s animals (penguins) and it‘s not too much to follow and goes towards what they‘re interested in
This is a modern fantasy. I liked the beginning of this book it was a good introduction to what modern fantasy was and from it I could grasp the idea of modern fantasy books

#ImperialMarch made me think of emperor penguins marching which brought me to a childhood favorite... Mr. Popper‘s Penguins 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
