Perchance to Dream
Perchance to Dream: Selected Stories | Charles Beaumont
12 posts | 4 read | 16 to read
The profoundly original and wildly entertaining short stories of a legendary Twilight Zone writer, with a foreword by Ray Bradbury and an afterword by William Shatner It is only natural that Charles Beaumont would make a name for himself crafting scripts for The Twilight Zone—for his was an imagination so limitless it must have emerged from some other dimension. Perchance to Dream contains a selection of Beaumont’s finest stories, including seven that he later adapted for Twilight Zone episodes. Beaumont dreamed up fantasies so vast and varied they burst through the walls of whatever box might contain them. Supernatural, horror, noir, science fiction, fantasy, pulp, and more: all were equally at home in his wondrous mind. These are stories where lions stalk the plains, classic cars rove the streets, and spacecraft hover just overhead. Here roam musicians, magicians, vampires, monsters, toreros, extraterrestrials, androids, and perhaps even the Devil himself. With dizzying feats of master storytelling and joyously eccentric humor, Beaumont transformed his nightmares and reveries into impeccably crafted stories that leave themselves indelibly stamped upon the walls of the mind. In Beaumont’s hands, nothing is impossible: it all seems plausible, even likely. "[Beaumont’s] imagination, as Perchance to Dream amply shows, was more than most writer's enjoy in the longest of lifetimes." -NPR For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. I'm familiar with Charles Beaumont from his Twilight Zone scripts, which tend to skew much darker than both Serling and Matheson. This collection of short stories is no different. Mostly trippy, rather disturbing, always thought provoking... a must read if you like seriously out there stories!

Sorry, Chuck Nutt, I'm not hip to this jive...

1950s hipster lingo is too far above my head. Gonna take a pass on this story...

Fun fact: Charles Beaumont's real name was Charles Nutt. 🥜

I was organizing a shelf when I came across this book, still TBR. One of the wildest covers on any of my books. I've been slowly making my way through seasons of Twilight Zone, Beaumont was a frequent writer on the show. I think it might be time to move this up my TBR stack.

khooliha This cover is incredible! 3y
vivastory @khooliha Isn't it? According to the book Will Sweeney is the artist 3y
Leftcoastzen Wow ! Art is amazing, I have a less glamorous Beaumont 3y

Reggie I loved the Twilight Zone. Stacked. 3y
Suet624 @Reggie twilight Zone episodes are on Hulu right now. 3y
Reggie @Suet624 Thanks, Sue! During holidays when I was younger they would always have these Twilight Zone marathons. And there‘d be times when we‘d come home and I‘d catch the tail end. 3y

Earlier this month I read the first 4 stories in this collection and just didn't finish. Maybe next year I'll read for more. The title story, Perchance to Dream was good, but the other three were just OK. They feel a bit formulaic, so it's prongs built good to not read them all in one sitting.

Ok, I'm not sure it counts as a "haul" but I picked this up at a FLL here and I'm proud of myself because it's going to push me further into the "twilight zone" ? than I've ever really gone. Can't wait!

Came across this in Barnes and Noble, of all places, a couple weeks after hearing William F. Nolan and Jason Brock extol the virtues of California horror at StokerCon. I have a new passion. :)

Great short stories. A couple were filmed as Twilight Zone episodes but most wouldn't have gotten past the censors. Weird and eerie.
