Also, this cutesy thing happened at least twice. Emojis don‘t belong here! It was very distracting.

marleed Oh I agree. No emojis in book text, please. I‘m reminded of Stephen King‘s disdain for adverbs in the tagged. I bet he‘d hate emojis! 11mo
ravenlee @marleed the first one was an aside that the recipe being mentioned was included in the first book in this series - so not just an obnoxious emoji, but breaking the fourth wall, too! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly I can absolutely see a place for emojis in fiction! If the story is being told or texts and/or emails. Otherwise, um, nope. I think I would have bailed after that first aside unless the book was really good! 11mo
marleed @Clare-Dragonfly oh agree on the email, text, epistolary communication embedded in a story! 11mo
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly @marleed exactly! As my HS English teacher used to say (in a very different context), “time and place, and this is neither.” 11mo

Oh boy. All right, first, I saw almost all the twists coming, so that was frustrating. The story was middling. Here‘s the BIG problem, though: A.L. Herbert is a pseudonym for a writer who is neither Black nor female, yet presents as such. I don‘t believe that every writer writing from a different perspective is guilty of cultural appropriation (it depends on how they do so and how they present themselves in the attempt) BUT 👇🏻

ravenlee when the author hides behind a nom de plume and makes it look as if they share the ethnicity/cultural background if their MC, then it‘s a problem. Especially because Wavonne, the MC‘s obnoxious cousin, is such a stereotypical trashy Black female, which becomes truly problematic when written by a non-Black male. Now it‘s not an elbow nudge and using the stereotypes ironically, but profiling and perpetuating those stereotypes. 11mo
ravenlee So, I felt very uncomfortable reading a lot of this once I discovered the author‘s identity. I wouldn‘t have continued the series anyway, as I don‘t care for cozies specifically but most mysteries generally, but now I definitely won‘t. I got a few prompts covered for my challenges, which is really what I needed anyway. 11mo

5feet.of.fury Yeah, I feel he intentionally misrepresented himself to appeal to a certain audience. Yuck. 11mo
ravenlee @5feet.of.fury exactly - and in doing so, worked through some horribly offensive checklist of Black stereotypes. 11mo
Amiable I love reading reviews of horrible books more than reviews of great books. So descriptive! Thanks for the warning. (edited) 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly That‘s really gross. Thanks for the warning. 11mo

#SeriesLove2023 #BookspinBingo

I found out something about the author that doesn‘t sit well with me and while I finished reading this installment I‘m not sure if I‘ll continue the series.

Andrew65 Sounds intriguing. Well done 👏👏👏 12mo

Trying to pick my next reads in a less chaotic way than letting the library rule my TBR. The #BookspinBingo spinner chose a book from from Scribd so I picked the tagged book so I could also make some progress in #SeriesLove2023

bthegood love that title - 🙂 12mo

I decided to make mac & cheese for the work holiday party, but I discovered that when I previously took a picture of the recipe I‘d only captured the ingredients! So I had to borrow the book from the library and try again. At the request of a coworker I left out the bacon, and it turned out fine. So now at age 58 I can finally say I‘ve made mac & cheese from scratch. #adulting

CaitZ I tried to do that a couple of times and set off the smoke alarm. I gave up after that. 4y
azulaco We were just at the Barnes & Noble at One Loudoun, and had the mac & cheese at their cafe. It was SO good. Now I‘m in search of good mac & cheese recipes to try at home, to try to replicate it. This one looks good! 4y

Sometimes you need to revert to your childhood self with a box of TMNT Mac and Cheese.

I'm being lazy and not cooking so I have more time to read!! Pretty sure that is completely acceptable. 😬

Johanna414 100% acceptable 7y
TheWordJar Acceptable and encouraged! 7y

#TBRtemptation post! The 2nd in the #cozymystery series, with recipes 😁👏🏻👏🏻! Mahalia's Sweet Tea in Maryland is known for great soul food, & she agrees to cater her high school reunion. One of the successful alums, Raynell Rollins, winds up dead &, because of how many sticky situations she was in, the list of suspects is long. Halia's cousin, Wavonne, helps to track down the killer before Halia's next. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Susanita Wavonne is hilarious! 7y

Suet624 Considering I can't have mac OR cheese this is just mean. I ate broccoli by itself for lunch for 2 years straight. Torture. 7y
BethFishReads @Suet624 😭😭😭 7y
Suet624 I forgot to mention I had to be really limited in what I ate because of Lyme. No gluten, no dairy, no sugar (fruits or sugary veggies). That's why I have such a weird diet. The lyme symptoms are a little better now so I can branch out a bit more. 7y
BethFishReads @Suet624 ugh. My husband had Lyme last summer but caught early enough that meds took care of it. 7y
Suet624 I'm so happy for him. It's no fun. 7y
BethFishReads @Suet624 total luck that his was caught early. We are so grateful. 7y

This book definitely #mademehungry and it includes recipes too! The murder story is fine, but it's the authentic local color and fun characters that make this cozy mystery enjoyable. To get the rest of the recipe, you have to get your own copy!
