"Imagine Stephen King writing Little House on the Prairie and you'll get the chilling, mind-bending horrors of Amy Lukavics's haunting and powerful debut novel." Cat Winters, Morris Award Finalist for In the Shadow of Blackbirds When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries. When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul. More Praise "[An] intensely creepy debut. There is no happy ending here and horror, and spine-tingler readers, will relish Lukavics's tale right down to the last terrifying page." School Library Journal "An old-fashioned ghost story plays on primal fears." Kirkus Reviews "A creepy read that mashes Laura Ingalls Wilder's prairie purity with Stephen King's most frightful horror." Booklist "Deeply disturbing, truly riveting and highly recommended." Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and The Nightsiders "Daughters unto Devils is basically Little Hell House on the Prairie." Grady Hendrix, author of Horrorstor: a Novel "Dark, dangerous, and creepily atmospheric. This is classic horror at its best." Gretchen McNeil, author of Ten and the "Don't Get Mad" series

1) the tagged book, plus comic anthology The Sleep of Reason. Last movie that did it (and had me locking my interior doors!) was the original Black Christmas.
2) Oh gosh, I read a lot of genre, so there's so many! But also my brain is insisting that I've never read a book in my life. Let's say the season appropriate Food Fright, a goofy little novella.
3) Any color I wear any other time of year!

#2019Book54
This book moves at the quick pace of a horror movie, but I would have still loved it if it had been a 500-page extremely slow burn. Either way, it‘s wonderfully creepy, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the ending is absolutely perfect!

The Devil just might never stop taking in this YA horror, which is legit one of the most unsettling books I have ever read.
(As Qcard trash, my favorite bit of Devil's Due is the suggestion that Ardra is just Q, a fun new way to bother/flirt with Picard.)

This was creepy. It just took a long time to really get into anything and even longer for anything scary to happen. It definitely had a sinister vibe to it and a dark and haunting ending. Not bad, but I didn‘t love it. #booked2018 #spooky read

Cinfhen Sorry it wasn‘t more spooky!! 6y
Cinfhen It‘s a cool title though 6y
Victoriahoperose @Cinfhen I know! I thought the same thing. It was scary, but I think I‘m spoiled because I‘ve read so many books that were really good - so I could be overly critical. Either way, I‘m glad I read it 😊 6y

So this book......is CREEPY! With a slow build up that made me think of bailing, it recovered quickly. This read impressed and surprised me. This story is going to stick around a little after finishing because I honestly had low expectations. #creepyfactor

Scratch that I don't want an adult. 😨😱😢

Well, of course, this was creepy. The title and book cover alone will give you the willies. It's Stephen King meets Little House on the Prairie, enough said. Great build up to an extremely creepy ending. 4.5 stars!

Finished Daughters Unto Devils this afternoon at work. It was a lot better than I thought it would be and a lot different than what I‘ve read before. I always enjoy a good, spooky read. :)

Total let down. I was so psyched after reading the starred reviews and blurb. I was waiting and waiting for something to happen but there was no suspense and really no climax.

No. Just no. This was not scary. At all. Nor was it well written or interesting. Luckily it was short.

My husband gets up this morning sees what I'm reading and reads the title out loud. Me: (reading the quote on the cover) "imagine Stephen King writing Little House on the Prairie." Him: so naturally you had to buy it. Me: so naturally I had to buy it! ?

I was not expecting quite as much horror. Slow build and almost painful amount of angsting at the start, but did go somewhere. Last line of audiobook combined with rising music of ending genuinely scared me. Stephen King meets Little House on the Prairie indeed.

⭐⭐. 5 While it was a super quick read, I did not find it scary. I actually found it rather predictable and the characters were lacking any depth.

This book really surprised me. The first 150 pages or so were kind of cliche and I was all "Yep, uh-huh, I've been down this road before." I seriously considered giving up, but then things started getting REAL CREEPY. A so-so just because of the slow start and some overdone plot points, but still going to sleep a little less easy because of this one.

When I can't decide which book I'd like to read next, sometimes I'll ask my boyfriend to pick something out of my stack of library books. There was a lot of "Ooooh.." and "WHAAAAT?" when he was reading the blurb for this one, so let's see if it lives up to his hype.

Blah. If you care nothing about anachronisms, inconsistencies or character depth, it's an okay read. Just because something is intended for teens doesn't mean it's okay to be a lazy writer. The author also doesn't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies. Teenagers really don't need this kind of misinformation. With so many good YA titles, it would be a shame to waste time on this one.

WoodyWoodson Good to know! That cover was so promising 👿👿👿 8y
moranadatter I wasn't a fan of it either. 8y
LauraJ @WoodyWoodson Exactly! And all the reviews here were good. Maybe I'm being a little harsh, but it seemed like the work of a begging writer. 8y

The anachronisms in this story are driving me crazy. Guessing this is set in the mid to late 1800's. Anyone know?

moranadatter As far as I remember, the time period was never mentioned. It was the nebulous "Ye Olden Days." 8y

This week's #recommendsday selection is dedicated to YA horror. A few years ago I was in a bad reading slump (I'm talking several months) and YA horror is what got me back into reading.

Everyone has their own definition of scary and Daughters Unto Devils scared the pants off me. Slasher Girls is a fantastic collection of short horror stories; a great way to introduce yourself to YA authors. Survive the Night is fun for fans of B-horror movies! 👻

[DELETED] 1409720085 YA horror is my jam. ❤️ 8y
