Many Waters
Many Waters | Madeleine L'Engle
Sandy and Dennys have always been the normal, run-of-the-mill ones in the extraodinary Murry family. They garden, make an occasional A in school, and play baseball. Nothing especially interesting has happened to the twins until they accidentally interrupt their father's experiment. Then the two boys are thrown across time and space. They find themselves alone in the desert, where, if they believe in unicorns, they can find unicorns, and whether they believe or not, mammoths and manticores will find them. The twins are rescued by Japheth, a man from the nearby oasis, but before he can bring them to safety, Dennys gets lost. Each boy is quickly embroiled in the conflicts of this time and place, whose populations includes winged seraphim, a few stray mythic beasts, perilous and beautiful nephilim, and small, long lived humans who consider Sandy and Dennys giants. The boys find they have more to do in the oasis than simply getting themselves home--they have to reunite an estranged father and son, but it won't be easy, especially when the son is named Noah and he's about to start building a boat in the desert.

I've been a fan of this series for years & it mostly holds up as an adult reading. More of a YA read than middle grade due to sexual content. There are discussions on good & evil, peer pressure, misogyny, & sex. I enjoyed the setting & retelling of Noah & the Ark. Very clever & entertaining. A bit of deus ex machina, but I let that slide since this is a younger book. L'Engle continues to be one of my favorite writers even after oh so many years.

As I graduated elementary school many, many years ago. My 5th grade teacher gave us each a book. This is the book I received. I actually no longer own this book or it went missing in my many moves but I have finally read this book give or take 20 years later.

It was nice to read this book finally after many years but I did not enjoy it as a story.

A bunch of beautiful books in #tertiarycolors for #colormepretty day 19! I was determined to get all of them, so the top one is a book I haven‘t even read yet!

Sunraven I so need to re-read Many Waters. I read it so many times as a kid and I‘m not sure I‘ve read it at all as an adult, haha... 5y

Done with book 2! Now giving my eyes a bit of a rest - pacing the house and listening to my audiobook for a few minutes. I‘d planned on listening to The Trials of Apollo, but accidentally reserved the ebook instead of the audiobook. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So I‘m listening to The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi instead. #readathon #deweys24hourreadathon @DeweysReadathon

kimmypete1 I hope you‘re enjoying it! I thoroughly enjoyed The Collapsing Empire. 5y

This one was my second favorite in the series and it is the fourth book of the quintet. I loved the biblical setting and all around good details that differentiate from today's world. Now on to the last one...

KCorter This is my favorite one as well. 6y

I have to say this is my favorite of this series so far! I loved that this one focused on the twins, Sandy and Dennys. The story telling was just beautiful with it being set just before Noah and the flood. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish. Unlike the others I wasn‘t too lost in this one! 😊 5/5 ⭐️

Latest #bookhaul. The tagged book is (one of) my current read, the fourth in the Time Quintet. Really enjoying the series. Annihilation is our next work book club book, and A Wrinkle in Time is for March. And I had to buy Simon after I finished that from the library!

Just finished this one this morning. It's definitely a lot better than A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet...but none of them compare to A Wrinkle in Time, in my opinion. However, still a fine read, so it's a pick.

A range of #YA for #smellsliketeenspirit, all of them favorites for different reasons. All books pictured were taken from my "everyday bookcases" where most of my favorite books live (see previous post).

Side note:
I love this song so much & have for many years (I was 9yo when Nevermind dropped, but 11yo when I first listened to it). I still wonder what incredible music Kurt Cobain might have created if he hadn't died. #27club

While a good twist on the Noah & the Ark story, this is my least favorite of the Time Quintet series. I just don't connect with the characters as much as those of the other books. They're fine & the story is sweet, but my main draw to it is that it is part of this series, not the story itself.

Book 4 in the Wrinkle in Time series. (out of 5) Mini mammoths, unicorns, time travel and Noah. A very fun read that was much more mature than I expected.
