Harper Voyager Trade Paperback Original Magic, murder, adventure, and romance combine in this second novel in the exciting Crown of Shards saga from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Estep. Everleigh Blair might be the new gladiator queen of Bellona, but her problems are far from over. First, Evie has to deal with a court full of arrogant, demanding nobles, all of whom want to get their greedy hands on her crown. As if that wasnt bad enough, an assassin tries to kill Evie in her own throne room. Despite the dangers, Evie goes ahead with a scheduled trip to the neighboring kingdom of Andvari in order to secure a desperately needed alliance. But complicating matters is the stubborn Andvarian king, who wants to punish Evie for the deaths of his countrymen during the Seven Spire massacre. But dark forces are at work inside the Andvarian palace, and Evie soon realizes that no one is safe. Worse, Evies immunity to magic starts acting in strange, unexpected ways, which makes her wonder whether she is truly strong enough to be a Winter Queen. But Evies magic, life, and crown arent the only things in dangerso is her heart, thanks to Lucas Sullivan, the Andvarian kings bastard son and Evies . . . well, Evie isnt quite sure what Sullivan is to her. Started the tagged book this morning. Got both via "Santa Thing" some years ago. Thought it was the first in the series. About 1/3 in I wanted to enter it into Goodreads and noticed it's the second and I should have read the Queen book first.

I'm not really missing any plot information at this point. Will probably ignore book one and continue with Prince.

MY RATING⇢ 4.3 STARS | GRADE A-
Despite excellent narration, an intriguing plotline, and exceptional action scenes, I found myself not into this quite as much as I was the first book in the series, but only slightly.

Though not quite as the action packed/edge of your seat thrill ride as book 1, this was still an excellent action-fantasy with romance. This is book 2 of a series and does not work as a stand alone. Definitely a series worth investing time in. This does not have a cliffhanger! #epicfantasy #romantsy

Melissa_J Loved the first book, and can‘t wait to read this one. Glad to read that it doesn‘t have a cliffhanger ending. 5y

A great sequel which was partitioned in an awesome way. There were a lot of bummer moments, but it had a good ending. Can't wait for the next one.

Not exactly out of my comfort zone as I often go out and about without make-up, but I often use filters for selfies. #nomakeup #nofilter #photochallenge

A great second installment in this series... I love the world building, and the reluctant Queen Evie and her band of Gladiators try to survive assassination attempts and form alliances.

GypsyKat That sounds fun! 5y

All of the characters that I fell in love with previously were back but their roles had changed, all for the better. It was great to see Evie‘s inner circle comprised of individuals that would never be considered proper for court. It made things interesting but nowhere near as interesting as Evie did with her unwillingness to submit to what was expected of her. She refused to be anything less than what her people needed. I loved her in this book!!
