Born in Sweetwater, West Virginia, with a mop of flaming red hair and a map of the world rendered in port-wine stains on every surface of her body, Garnet Ferrari is used to being an outcast. With her sharp tongue, she has always known how to defend herself against bullies and aggressors, but she finds she is less adept at fending off the pilgrims who have set up a veritable tent city outside her hilltop home, convinced that she is Saint Garnet, healer of skin ailments and maker of miracles. Her grandmother, the indelible Nonna Diamante, believes that Garnet's mystical gift can be traced back to the family's origins in the Nebrodi Mountains of Sicily, and now the Vatican has sent an emissary to Sweetwater to investigate. Garnet, wanting nothing more than to debunk this "gift" and send these desperate souls packing, reaches back into her family's tangled past and unspools for the Church a tale of love triangles on the shores of the Messina Strait; a sad, beautiful maiden's gilded-cage childhood in blueblood Virginia; and the angelic, doomed boy Garnet could not protect. Saint or not, Garnet learns that the line between reality and myth is always blurred, and that the aspects of ourselves we are most ashamed of can prove to be the source of our greatest strength, and even our salvation.

Mehso-so

I feel bad for saying that this book didn‘t work for me. I rate it as a so-so. I just got so mad at the characters. I wanted them to be different, to be kinder. Trigger warnings for sexual assault/rape and an enormous amount of racism. The racial slurs were in almost every chapter repeatedly, which really frustrated me. I can‘t say that I‘d recommend this book. I was glad when it was over. #unpopularopinion

Pickpick

This book took a bit to get into — as there‘s a lot of backstory — but it was worth the build up. Loved it!

My FAVORITE read of 2018. I had previously read a few meh books, this was such a joy! It got deep,it made me laugh, it was fascinating. A touch of fantasy, a ton of culture, unique well rounded characters that you loved or hated with passion. An amazingly well written book that I must own a copy of! LOVED it!And I never would have picked it up without #LMPBC
The Italian origins and funky superstitions were so fun. And I loved nonna!❤️

An Italian immigrant family living in the mountains of West Virginia with a granddaughter who is covered in port wine stains. People become convinced she is Saint Garnet healer of skin conditions and pilgrims begin coming to visit her to be healed. The Vatican eventually sends someone to investigate and the family history is revealed. #ladymadonna #heyjune

Cathythoughts What a crazy cover 😮❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Blaire @emilyhaldi @CouronneDhiver @cinfhen I read it for feminist book club about 4 years ago and we all liked it. I liked the relationship between the Nona and the main character as well as the back story about the family. It was a quick read if I recall. The details are hazy. I gave it 4 ⭐️ on goodreads. 6y
Blaire @Cathythoughts yes! It‘s wild and strange like the book. 6y
CouronneDhiver Worth a shot. I‘m not crazy about feminist themes, but you never know. 6y
Blaire @CouronneDhiver I don‘t think it‘s overtly feminist themed..,my book club will read anything by a female author that has the potential for discussion of how it addresses women‘s roles and the impact of feminism. 6y

Next up in the #NCBgiveaway is The Patron Saint of Ugly! This one looks so good (check on the Litsy book description)! A blurb on the back calls it "a vastly entertaining story of a reluctant saint, her indelible nonna, and their family's long history of love, trickery, and transcendence." If you want to read it, comment below! (US only ?) and I'll draw names on Tuesday.

My fandom lies in West Virginia books - authors from or books about. I see my neighbors, family, and self in the pages of many of these reads which are beautiful and ugly, terrifying and comforting. "Is it any wonder then, that my heart with rapture thrills..." #octphotochallenge
