Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - and Keep - Love | Amir Levine, Rachel Heller
Is there a science to love? In this groundbreaking book, psychiatrist and neuroscientist Amir Levine and psychologist Rachel S. F. Heller reveal how an understanding of attachment theory-the most advanced relationship science in existence today-can help us find and sustain love. Attachment theory forms the basis for many bestselling books on the parent/child relationship, but there has yet to be an accessible guide to what this fascinating science has to tell us about adult romantic relationships-until now. Attachment theory owes its inception to British psychologist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby, who in the 1950s examined the tremendous impact that our early relationships with our parents or caregivers has on the people we become. Also central to attachment theory is the discovery that our need to be in a close relationship with one or more individuals is embedded in our genes. In Attached, Levine and Heller trace how these evolutionary influences continue to shape who we are in our relationships today. According to attachment theory, every person behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways: *ANXIOUS people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partner's ability to love them back. *AVOIDANT people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness. *SECURE people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving. Attached guides readers in determining what attachment style they and their mate (or potential mates) follow. It also offers readers a wealth of advice on how to navigate their relationships more wisely given their attachment style and that of their partner. An insightful look at the science behind love, Attached offers readers a road map for building stronger, more fulfilling connections.

Had a lot of information for me. I found out why I would overthink any bit of attention(positive or negative) I got from the other gender -- because I have an Anxious Attachment Style.

I think that this book is a must read for anyone who wants to have a relationship or is already in one.

Understanding the Styles is easy, but making things work are difficult, that's why they have sections on how to make things work as well(thank God for that!).

I have an anxious attachment style, with half of secure attachment and a tiny bit of avoidant attachment. Great going till now, only half the book remains.

Honestly speaking, for a teenager the books I've been reading are a bit too much, but at the same time extremely helpful for what's about to come in life.

Does anyone have any tips for me, as I'm heading towards my first proper relationship?

Reggie If I could give my younger self any advice it would be to work on being your best self. Go to the gym, stay away from sugar, learn alot about alot but not to dominate a conversation but to be able to contribute and be interesting. Finish your university degree. Have you ever heard of Dan Savage. He is a gay sex columnist but he gives a lot of relationship advice that is universal. He has a book. I‘d say read it. 12mo
Infinite_Adnan @Reggie Thank you kind sir for your advice; I'll surely look into his book soon. 12mo

I was very dubious of this book, but after hearing a friend prescribes it in her therapy practice, it was worth a chance! I learned my secure relationship has healed a lot of my anxious attachment. I really appreciated that this book doesn‘t shame anxious attachment! If you‘re stuck in an unhappy pattern with relationships, this is a basic, heteronormative, and monoganormative guide but also a quick, clear, helpful, healing, worthwhile read.

The book seems somewhat insightful and useful at first but then becomes too repetitive.

Definitely a pop psychology feel to this but some good nuggets nonetheless. Short quizzes included where you can assess your attachment style and your partner‘s. The “secure” style comprises 50% of the population and there‘s hardly any advice for that style. Like we‘re universal donors in attachment issues in romantic relationships without our own issues and needs. Would like to see if there‘s a better book out there on this topic.

JamieArc My partner and I got a lot out of the tagged book. Practical stuff backed by science. 2y
JamieArc I apparently read this one too and rated it 4 stars, but that was a long time ago so I don‘t trust myself on that 😆 2y

I was hoping for a more nuanced and broad-based introduction to attachment styles, but, as it says on the tin, this is solely about romantic relationships. The tests and examples have very narrow application. And I was bugged that people with secure attachments were assumed to be relationship gods.

I don‘t normally read too many personality books, let alone things more directly associated with relationships, but I jumped into this one on recommendation, and I really did enjoy the read.
If you are looking for a more personality-type read, I would recommend The Complete Enneagram by Beatrice Chestnut, but as far as a potentially helpful relationship read, this one was exceptionally done well.

This is a self-help guide to understanding adult attachment styles and can prove quite useful in improving relationships. The book includes a short but relevant test to determine if one manifests the anxious, avoidant or secure attachment type and further explains how these work and translate into behaviours which can further be adapted towards compatibility even between apparently conflicting styles.

I really needed this book last year when I was being messed around by my ex who had melancholy depression and narcissistic personality disorder. Highly recommend if you keep meeting idiots like I do.

That moment when a book on relationships quotes a philosopher.

It really affirms my therapeutic approach of integrating philosophy into my work with clients. 💚

So this was "rec" by a podcast I was listening too, and it was hailed as like a different look at the same kind of concept of the Love Languages. Or maybe it's more that the two are different sides of the same coin? Anyhoo. I'm slowly chipping away at it. No real truth bombs have been dropped yet but its an interesting concept.

So in reading, i've learned quite a bit about myself not just romantically but in a general perspective.

There were a lot of great points throughout and it was easy to understand and that's what i enjoyed about this the most - the ease in which i read and understood the material

So I'm listening to this podcast and just really loving and enjoying Danielle's honesty and warmth and she's talking about the tagged book and I realized that I have that book and it's just sitting in my #MountTBR shelf and her talking about it has made me rethink the reading of that book. Seriously rethinking it.

DivaDiane Rethinking it, meaning you‘ll read it right away or meaning you won‘t read it at all? 6y
mariaku21 @DivaDiane haha as read it right after my current reads which I now see I didn't list them here but on goodreads 6y
MayginReads Is this the podcast you were recommending? Sadly it's not in the app that I use, so I'll have to figure out Spotify. 6y
mariaku21 it is but I know that I can send it as a web link so it can open in any browser @MayginReads 6y

Attached gave me so much clarity, with an avoidant attachment style I didn't understand why I often felt how I did in relationships. It's easier to communicate my feelings now and avoid ruining a good thing because of a lack of self-understanding.
