A Writer's Diary
A Writer's Diary | Virginia Woolf
19 posts | 8 read | 2 reading | 26 to read
An invaluable guide to the art and mind of Virginia Woolf, drawn by her husband from the personal record she kept over a period of twenty-seven years. Included are entries that refer to her own writing, others that are clearly writing exercises; accounts of people and scenes relevant to the raw material of her work; and comments on books she was reading. Edited and with a Preface by Leonard Woolf; Indices.

“I will not be ‘famous‘, ‘great‘. I will go on adventuring, changing, opening my mind and my eyes, refusing to be stamped and stereotyped. The thing is to free one's self: to let it find its dimensions, not be impeded.”

I‘m slowly reading Virginia Woolf‘s diary entries, studying them, and highlighting quotes. I‘ve been suffering from writer‘s burnout, so I‘m hoping that reading her words as a woman and writer will ease my struggle. The highlighted part makes me laugh. I can‘t read my printed work without blushing and wishing to redo it or wanting to hide.

Happy wedding anniversary to Virginia and Leonard Woolf! She wrote in her diary against the idea that marriage grows stale. Instead, Woolf writes: "The truth is more like this--say 4 days out of 7--becomes automatic; but on the 5th day a bead of sensation forms which is all the fuller and more sensitive because of the automatic customary unconscious days on either side. That is to say the year is marked by great moments of intensity." ❤️

kdwinchester Virginia is my FAVORITE!!! 😍 3y
GhostStories @kdwinchester mine too!! Along with Austen, Rhys, and George Eliot. But most of all Woolf. 3y

SOUND FAMILIAR? "This masterpiece [La Princesse de Clèves] has long been on my conscience. Me to talk of fiction and not to have read this classic! But reading classics is generally hard going."

AmyWrites Oooh, thank you for reminding me about this! I've wanted to read for ages and now I can put it in my TBR so I don't forget again! 3y
Lindy This was suggested for summer reading on the latest Guardian Books podcast. Sounds good! 3y

Pickpick

Rereading Mrs. Dalloway to play along with The Happy Reader book club; it's wonderful and, you know, a bit of a challenge. So I picked up A Writer's Diary to see what it might add (quite a bit) and guess what? It is NOT a challenge. It's addicting. It's literary-genius-flavored potato chips.

dairine Am I horrible that I REALLY didn't like Mrs. Dalloway? I'm awful, aren't I? 3y

OSChamberlain I read that exact same copy for my Brit lit class. Also had a hard time with it but liked it enough that I want to revisit it one of these days. 3y
SusanInTiburon @dairine Heavens no! It's Virginia Woolf! She wrote to please herself; she made no effort to please the likes of us! For me, parts of it are gorgeous and other parts are ... hard work. 3y
Mayread That reminds that someone absconded with my Bell. Does she get bitchy about Joyce & Eliot in this one, too? 3y
MrBook I have that copy. It's a beautiful cover. 3y
Gezemice That's great to know! I might need to get a copy of that! I did love Mrs Dalloway but it was definitely hard work in parts. I found you kind of need to get into a rythm to enjoy it but if you do it is fantastic! 3y
SusanInTiburon @Skiles She's scathing about Ulysses, mostly because she finds it, and Joyce, lower-class. T.S. Eliot appears frequently as a member of her circle, but her opinion of his work is muted. 3y
Mayread @Susanintiburon Haha. Love it. Well, I might as well pile another one on.. 3y
dairine @Susanintiburon I feel vindicated. It was beautiful in some places, when it wasn't a slog. 3y
