I'm not crazy. I don't see what the big deal is about what happened. But apparently someone does think it's a big deal because here I am. I bet it was my mother. She always overreacts. Fifteen-year-old Jeff wakes up on New Year's Day to find himself in the hospital. Make that the psychiatric ward. With the nutjobs. Clearly, this is all a huge mistake. Forget about the bandages on his wrists and the notes on his chart. Forget about his problems with his best friend, Allie, and her boyfriend, Burke. Jeff's perfectly fine, perfectly normal, not like the other kids in the hospital with him. Now they've got problems. But a funny thing happens as his forty-five-day sentence drags onthe crazies start to seem less crazy. Compelling, witty, and refreshingly real, Suicide Notes is a darkly humorous novel from award-winning author Michael Thomas Ford that examines that fuzzy line between "normal" and the rest of us.

As a former suicidal 15 year old in a psych ward, this book gets so many of the emotions involved right. It has the right mix of humor and pubescent sarcasm to keep you intrigued and engaged in the characters without it becoming overly gloomy and difficult. Definitely recommend

“I don‘t get it. Why is it you have to WARN people about who you are? Why can‘t it just be something that happens?”

This book is amazing. It‘s a well written novel about the ins and outs of knowing who you are, figuring out who you are, and the struggles you may have with it. The author put just enough of his own life in it that it‘s remarkably real. It‘s easy to lose the idea that it is fictional.

I think about this book too often. It‘s painful and comforting and so freaking raw and real. Love it so much

This book should be accessible to all teens to help them know they‘re not alone whatever their situation may be. Ford truly brought the characters and setting to life.

That‘s a wrap on #JoysofJune. I read 5 planned books plus 3 others. Great readathon! Thanks @Andrew65 !

This book was absolutely amazing and what I needed to read. It follows a 15 year old boy names Jeff and his 45 day treatment due to him attempting to commit suicide. It had some humor in it. It was more than about someone going to treatment because they need help. It was more about acceptance and accepting who you truly are.

So do any of you guys journal? I mean I don't really journal (I have a think with my handwriting and its hard for me to write and have it be messy difficult to read... any of you #LitsyLove notes recipients will know what I am talking about!) But I do have to say things outloud sometimes so that I can have them stop swimming in my head... Even if nobody really listens to them.

#TBRCrew

jessinikkip I dont journal but my wife occassionally gets what has to be 10000000 word messages from me ranting about one thing or another. My therapist says I should journal but IDK I just dont 4y
jb72 I do a couple of things. I using scripting (vision journaling), I also have been using what my friend calls autonomous writing. Plus I have my witchy journal where I do art witching. 4y
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip I think that's the same way I am. I have to tell my husband why I am upset, and just complain about something then its out of my head and I am usually better (its usually work related things) But you know how that goes... 4y
See All 12 Comments
ElizaMarie @jb72 ooo a witchy journal!? Sounds great! 4y
Revenge4bess I have tried to keep a traditional journal; never could. So, I now “journal” on Notes(IPhone) 4y
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie no journal, but I used to write poetry when I was in H.S. to get all my emotions out. 4y
ElizaMarie @SavvyLibrarian I think I would be better at a “blog“ or something that I can type because I tend to ramble ... Maybe I should look into that? 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Awe.. I used to do that too but it was god-awful poetry! embarrassing if I were to find them! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m big on journaling and have a personal journal where generally everything goes, a book journal, and an art journal. I try to write in at least one every day. I used to type out my journal on the computer and know of people that do video journaling so they can just talk it out to a camera. There are also journaling/diary apps for your phone. ❤️ 4y
ElizaMarie @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm do you use any of the apps on the phone? I always admired people that journal. Like I felt it was such a “put together“ thing 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @ElizaMarie I‘m more of a “hard copy” person with my journaling. I don‘t personally use any of the apps. I may jot something down in my notes app if I don‘t have my personal journal with me. I carry it in my handbag, so it‘s always with me. And I don‘t know about being “put together” 😅 I certainly don‘t feel like I am. I started by setting an alarm every day for a time that I knew I‘d be free to write. Then I‘d do 15 minutes of “stream of ⬇️ 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm conscious” writing. Don‘t worry about it all making sense, or looking pretty, or spelling and grammar mistakes. I think a lot of people have the misconception that their journals should be publish-worthy tomes of wisdom when really the most important thing is to just WRITE YOUR THOUGHTS! It‘s definitely worth it to have your old self to look back on and help you remember who you were and who you want to be. I hope you give it a try! ❤️❤️ 4y

Such a true statement. Everyone deals with their lives in their own way. We can't compare our trauma/pain/happiness to others. It is all about you and how you process/feel things! #TBRCrew

AkashaVampie So true!!! I might have to check this book out. What is it about? 4y
jb72 So true. My friend and I have talked about this subject. She has had a very tragic year and I try not to complain because of her pain. 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Its about a kid (15ish) that wakes up in a psychiatric hospital after having attempted suicide. He is a bit defiant, refusing to really cooperate or share his story initially. He is “sentenced“ to 45 days and so every chapter is a day, you learn a bit more about him, why he is there and also the other patients. 4y
See All 6 Comments
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie wow... that hits close to home. I was 15 when I was in the psych ward. I only spent a week but it was tough. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I get not wanting to complain because she has had such trauma, but ... it doesn't lessen anything you have going on.. I was in a car accident once, it freaked me out.. and my cousin told me “at least you didn't die“.. and yeah great I didn't die! But that doesn't mean I was freaked out and scared and all those things. And it really shut down my communication with her (to the point we basically grew apart) because I felt I couldn't express me 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Thank you for sharing that with me. This so far is a quick read and I am enjoying it so far. I will let you know when I finish it. 4y

jb72 Every kid graduating high school should be given a copy of the constitution and bill of rights. When I worked at the sheriff‘s office, I heard it so many time. (As well as “I pay your salary.” Why thank you for allowing me to live below the poverty line!) 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 The amount of times a patient has fired me!!! I mean... I don't know why they think they pay my salary as well. But yeah! I hear it constantly! 4y
AsYouWish The student I work with during the school year threatens to fire me at least twice a week. However that quickly changes when something needs to be done and help is needed. After four years of it, I just shake my head and wait it out. 4y
ElizaMarie @AsYouWish Same! Like when they yell at me to “leave me alone you stupid bitch“ then like not even 10 min later they ar euphorias asking for crackers or something. 4y
jessinikkip Had similar experiences in retail/customer service. I always loved the folks that always had an attitude and cussed and fussed and then thought we would miss them if they stopped coming in. 4y

Adding this one from my #TBRCrew book list as part of the goal for #JubilantJuly --- actually I might start it super early -- like today. :) .. I did break it up into 7 day increments though. I think its a quick read. It looks like it will be so.. yeah.

jessinikkip Would love to hear your thoughts when you're done. I hear its good but suicide can hit hard with me, so IDK if it takes a more lighthearted approach or really detailed 4y
ElizaMarie @jessinikkip I will let you know. It looks like a super quick read ... Just when I was putting my tabs to plan out the week. But.. Yeah I will definitely let you know what I think. 4y

This book was unbelievable🤯 it was amazing! This is my first non-fantasy book and I‘m SOOOO GLAD that I read it!! Jeff (main character) was one of the most amazing characters ever! I imagined him as one of my close friends and it made it even better. This book was really enlightening and had so much emotion with it I never put it down and I loved the book! RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE.
And remember we all have struggles in life be there for all

Dr._Who_number10 And so many laughs were had with this book, the sarcasm, the way he tries to not laugh when him and his sister have an amazing bond. And the little bits and pieces shared. Had me hooked from the start. 6y

This book is outstanding. It follows Jeff, a 15 year old struggling with some coming of age type things, who tried to commit suicide. It‘s funny, it‘ll break your heart, and it‘ll make you want to hug someone all at the same time.

I included the above picture because if you or anyone you know are struggling, there‘s always someone with time to listen.

You should definitely read this book, and then share it with someone. ❤️

Remember "It's Kind of a Funny Story"? Well, think that, but better. And funnier. And pretty much just as filled with crazy characters. And Jeff, the narrator, is hilarious and sarcastic. Such a good read. 5/5 stars

If I were to write a book, I wish it was like Suicide Notes. It's a great and fast read (for me). Once I started, I didn't stop. Though I sort of predicted the ending, it was still a fun read. It's good for people who seek to see the other side of "normal".
