The Manson Women and Me
The Manson Women and Me: Monsters, Morality, and Murder | Nikki Meredith
13 posts | 10 read | 17 to read
In the summer of 1969, Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel carried out horrific acts of butchery on the orders of the charismatic cult leader Charles Manson. At their murder trial the following year, lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi described the two so-called Manson Women as human monsters. But to anyone who knew them growing up, they were bright, promising girls, seemingly incapable of such an unfathomable crime. Award-winning journalist Nikki Meredith began visiting Van Houten and Krenwinkel in prison to discover how they had changed during their incarceration. The more Meredith got to know them, the more she was lured into a deeper dilemma: What compels normal people to do unspeakable things? The authors relationship with her subjects provides a chilling lens through which we gain insight into a particular kind of woman capable of a particular kind of brutality. Through their stories, Nikki Meredith takes readers on a dark journey into the very heart of evil.

Watch the movie Charlie Says… so much insight https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1759744/

Tagged book is 🤯

mollyrotondo Charlie Says is a really excellent movie. Saw it at a local film festival and the director came to speak afterward. Really well done. 8mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo It is quite possibly the best thing made about the events. Also so sad, stayed with me a long time. 8mo

In 1996, journalist and social worker, Nikki Meredith began writing letters to Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel in prison. It took time to build trust. For over 20 years she continued to communicate with them both

This good, interesting, but a bit long. A good psychological study of the psychology of mind control and being evil.

Just starting this tonight......a look into how being one of the Manson cult has influenced their lives during the crimes and after the incarceration of Leslie Van Houten and Pat Kremwinkle.

Reviewsbylola Omg I need to read this! Leslie Van Houten has the same birthday as me and of all the girls, it‘s difficult to understand how she ended up being involved in the Manson family. 4y

Finished last night but not before I went to text my brother a fun fact about the Manson family but accidentally sent it to my neighbor who I only text about walking her dog...I am the MASTER of awkwardness. I'm going to have to move now I think.

How could a book about the Manson women not be interesting? This was fascinating but I was disappointed in the author inserting herself into the narrative (even when it didn‘t make any sense). Wish the storytelling was more linear and not as disjointed, so I could have just read the straight forward facts. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pickpick

An interesting look at Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel - two of the women in the Manson family. The author details her visits with the women in prison. I wish Meredith left out the stories regarding her own background and family because they didn‘t exactly fit in. This book reads more like a memoir than true crime. #Netgalley

This is my first #NetGalley book and I would say that it was a moderate success. It is clear that a lot of time and research went into this book, but in my opinion the author tried too hard to relate the Manson Women‘s experiences to her own life, which distracted from the research and purpose. So while I enjoyed parts of the book, it definitely could have been better.

Reviewsbylola Ooooh this sounds promising. I would love to hear more from Krenwinkel and Van Houten, so I will be reading this. 6y
Reviewsbylola @Meredith3 I bet you would want to read this too. 6y
