Read to finish the whole duology

Just started reading and so far it‘s good. The historical background fits the plot well. Plot involves black young girls that go to school to train to fight the dead also known as shamblers!

What happens when the Civil War is interrupted by a zombie uprising? This awesome book, that‘s what! A sickle-wielding , funny, smart, salty, badass teenage heroine taking on the undead and racial injustice. And Bahni Turpin Queen of audiobooks as the narrator. Yes please! This was terrific. Can‘t wait for book #2!

Loved this story about Jane McKeene, zombie-fighter extraordinaire. But the real monsters are inside the walls. Civil war ended as result of zombie uprising, there are still people called “Survivalists” working to restore pre-war ways. Children of color are forced to go to combat schools and protect cities/whites. I really loved this. Historical fiction with a thoroughly modern twist. I listened to the audio book and the narration was amazing!

Question - did anyone who read the tagged book find the writing style to be detracting (and in fact distracting)? I‘m on the fence. Picture of my first sous vide cooked dinner as an added bonus 😋 (I listen to Levar Burton while I cook so only marginally relevant tbh)

Every Weds, we pick a new author to be our #writercrush, from bookseller favorites to underrepresented authors you need to know about. This week, we're loving Justina Ireland, author of the YA epic Dread Nation. Set in post-Reconstruction America, Dread Nation focuses on the life of Jane McKeene, a young Black girl trained with other Black and Native people to kill zombies that have risen at the site of Civil War battlefields.

Who‘s read Dread Nation? I‘m getting SERIOUS Bella and Edward vibes in the first couple hundred pages. “Oh this beautiful boy must hate me because his face turns sour every time we meet!” Hmm.

This book is so much fun! So glad @MamaBear recommended it to me because I throughly enjoyed it. Shortly after the Civil War, zombies are taking over the country. Jane McKeen has only ever been taught to kill them, but she just wants to get home to her mama on Rose Hill. But life has other plans. This book deals with Reconstruction and backwards-thinking white folks and it‘s all too relevant to today. I loved the MC and the audiobook narrator.
