Ship It | Britta Lundin
CLAIRE is a sixteen-year-old fangirl obsessed with the show Demon Heart. FOREST is an actor on Demon Heart who dreams of bigger roles. When the two meet at a local Comic-Con panel, it's a dream come true for Claire. Until the Q&A, that is, when Forest laughs off Claire's assertion that his character is gay. Claire is devastated. After all, every last word of her super-popular fanfic revolves around the romance between Forest's character and his male frenemy. She can't believe her hero turned out to be a closed-minded jerk. Forest is mostly confused that anyone would think his character is gay. Because he's not. Definitely not. Unfortunately for Demon Heart, when the video of the disastrous Q&A goes viral, the producers have a PR nightmare on their hands. In order to help bolster their image within the LGBTQ+ communityas well as with their fansthey hire Claire to join the cast for the rest of their publicity tour. What ensues is a series of colorful Comic-Con clashes between the fans and the show that lead Forest to question his assumptions about sexuality and help Claire come out of her shell. But how far will Claire go to make her ship canon? To what lengths will Forest go to stop her and protect his career? And will Claire ever get the guts to make a move on Tess, the very cute, extremely cool fanartist she keeps running into? Ship It is a funny, tender, and honest look at all the feels that come with being a fan.

This book was so much fun! I was/am such a huge fanboy. The struggle of a character to genuinely find a comfortable group they can be themselves with is good literature in 2020 or 1920.

I‘ll put the ones I found particularly upsetting/annoying in the comments!

I have this little stack of books related to comic con that I really want to dive into. Unfortunately I have 6 half started books that I either have to finish or bail on because I‘ve been dragging my feet like crazy on them. I also desperately need to clean and reorganize my library. 😫 Wish me luck!

Oh, I loved this thoughtful look at fandom, the bad of it and the very good. I (like so, so many) don't see myself in pop culture spaces, and (like so, so many) I push back on that constantly and it's fun to remake the and it's frustrating to have to do it. This book feels like that.

khooliha The phone lock code thing was not important at all, but hey, you don't make your lock code someone's name unless they really matter to you. Take it from me, someone who has done that very thing! 5y
khooliha Anyway, my Pride is continuing apace with blasting obnoxious queer pop out of my obnoxious yellow car and grinning about the queer book I just finished. 5y

Morning storms have left me with no one at my summer drop-in program this afternoon..Going to enjoy the chance to re-read this while the slow period lasts, next week will probably be crazy! I think I read this last year, I remember this as a fun read with likable main characters. Better enjoy the slow period while it lasts- I‘m sure it will be busy when school is out next week!

I wasn't sire if there was gonna be queerness on both sides of the dual POV, but I needn't have wondered, what with Forrest setting his phone lock code as Rico's name. I hope someone brings it up eventually!

Finished this on my cold weather-induced day off. I loved it!! Such a great setting. I thought the author nailed the fandom/fanfiction/fan convention portion of this perfectly. Additionally, I thought it had a great be-comfortable-with-yourself aspect/message that really resonated with how unsure I felt about myself in high school.

Claire gained some perspective and Forest lightened up which made the end of this book very enjoyable. I appreciated the message, and the humor, so this book is a pick for me despite how annoyed I was in the middle. Also, Rico is the best character ever and I wish I knew a dozen people just like him.

Has anyone else read this? I'm only a couple chapters in and I'm really enjoying the humor. But my brain keeps trying to make Smokey and Heart fit into Supernatural- despite their show not being Supernatural- and it's making my head spin. Is it just me?

Just finished this the other day! And how great is it, that i finally got around to it during pride month! This book is part of the lgbtq+ community. I feel in ways a lot like Claire.
It is about a girl named Claire, that writes fanfic about a show and it's two characters. Excited about them going to appear in a con. She bravely asks a question. Many want to know. But doesn't get a good answer.. And also questions herself

bullbunny It will have you laughing for sure 6y

So great! Super adorable girl/girl teen romance (with an on-the-page pansexual identified character!). I really liked how Lundin resisted the urge to make her characters 'good.' Not only does this book deal beautifully with fandom, shipping, fan fic, and geek culture (the good, bad, and ugly), it's also a thoughtful exploration of a questioning teen. You have to suspend your disbelief a bit with some plot points, but this didn't bother me at all.

GondorGirl This was already on the watch list, but your review makes it a must read! 6y

Ugh, I have such mixed feelings about this book. I love books about fandom and conventions, and the romance was pretty adorable. However, the way the fan-creator conflict was ramped up really left a bad taste in my mouth, with excessive bad behaviour really just glossed over in the end. I had suspension-of-disbelief issues along the way.

I really have a soft spot for the books where the fangirl meets the object of her fangirl admiration. Brings me back to my middle-school self! This book was great-- super cute and there was a lot of growth on the parts of both POV characters.
