I wasn‘t sure if I‘d enjoy starting this book immediately after I finished North and South, but I am really loving it. The story began immediately after the first book ended, but it did not feel slow to start, like the first book did. The war has begun, but is not widespread yet. Most of the characters are anticipating their turn at fighting, which will come soon.

This book is over 1,000 pages!! I love a good #chunkster!!

EvieBee Wow! That‘s a chunkster indeed. 2y

You guys! I got book shamed today! This has never happened to me before and I‘m feeling really frustrated!

I made a post on my Facebook page yesterday, of the quote from my last post here on litsy and included a picture of the cover of the book. A friend of mine saw the confederate flag on the book cover and kind of lost it about how novels about the American civil war Romanticize the Old South and black slavery. I responded that it was a ⬇️

Jabberwocky Fictional book and I was reading it strictly for pleasure- and mentioned that as a person with a BA in lit with a minor in history that I am fully capable of spotting problematic bias in things that I read. She responded that I shouldn‘t waste my time on anything that remotely supports racial biases and that I was basically perpetuating KKK ideology! Am I completely crazy to feel like I was attacked? And to be hurt that she would think that of me? 6y
cobwebmoth I would feel hurt, too. And this is also why I refuse to use Facebook. *hugs* 6y
wanderinglynn I‘d be hurt. You are an intelligent reader who is more than capable of reading an allegedly biased book and coming to your own conclusion. And your experience right there is why I deleted my FB account. Seriously WTF?! If this person really was really a friend, she would (A) understand you better and (B) be respectful enough to talk to you in person (if she felt so strongly about it) instead of trying to shame you on social media. {hugs} 🌈💜 6y

CouronneDhiver The things people say in the name of “social justice” these days is ridiculous. Chin up. Don‘t let silly people get you down. 😊 6y
Betty Block her on FB. I blocked several for their ugly political talk 6y
Betty Also sounds like a denier. Example: "Holocaust didn't happen. There was no moon landing. Don't read about the Civil War." 6y
trazo Woah! That‘s intense. Sounds like she may be extreme with something that may feel uncomfortable for her and taking it out on you. Jealous of your knowledge by the way. Impressive! 6y
Aimeesue It a hot button topic for a lot of people lately, especially given the political climate. Charlottesville was only a year ago, and the Nazi brethren are planning a rally in DC on the anniversary. Racists seem to be crawling out of the woodwork. Given that, and the fighting over confederate statutes all across the south, I can understand why your friend might have reacted that way. If it were me, i might remind my friend that knowing where and ⬇️ (edited) 6y
Aimeesue Why the confederate flag gained so much meaning for people is important if you want to understand why they're still holding on to it so tightly. 6y
quietjenn I think your feelings are absolutely justified. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl Historical fiction is based on history for the most part and history is history.. you can‘t change it but should learn from it, you can‘t ignore it and pretend bad things didn‘t happen.. .. her opinion about what people should or shouldn‘t be reading smacks of censorship ... I‘m so glad she doesn‘t have final say on what books get published. She was judgemental and unkind to you, her friend. 😬😢 Hugs to you. (edited) 6y
Jabberwocky You guys have all been so kind. I appreciate the love and support so much. @cobwebmoth *hugs!* @wanderinglynn That‘s exactly what I thought!! It‘s unnecessary and rude! @CouronneDhiver I am usually super open minded and attempt to be the best ally I can be in those sorts of situation but 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Jabberwocky @Betty She definitely isn‘t a denier, but I‘m thinking blocking isn‘t a terrible idea. @trazo I think you are probably right. It‘s hard to meet that kind of situation with understand right away. I wish I had your compassion. @Aimeesue I understand her thought process, it just hurt that she responded as harshly to me as she did @quietjenn ♥️ @CoverToCoverGirl I didn‘t even think of it in a censorship way, but that‘s so true. 6y
emilyhaldi I second @CouronneDhiver 💯 Personally, I'm tired of people getting offended so easily and constantly being on the attack. I'm sure it was especially hurtful coming from a friend. 👎🏻👎🏻 6y
LeahBergen I second @emilyhaldi and @CouronneDhiver . I‘m so done with ill-informed people being offended by things that they know little about. If I‘m reading about the history of the Nazi party coming to power does that mean I‘m perpetuating Nazi ideology? Please. Hugs to you, my friend. 😘 6y

You guys I am head over heels in love with this quote! ??. (Picture is from my engagement shoot ?️‍?)

"Leathery incense swirled from shelves without so much as an inch of empty space. Jane felt herself to be in a cathedral. She continued to stand silently, like a petitioner. Then she tilted her head back and raised her gaze to the books, all the books, while a radiance broke over her face." #quotes #quotesaboutbooks

Bookish lunch breaks are all that get me through sometimes. My coworkers arent big on reading and commenting on the speed that I go through books seems to entertain them. Im finding this book to be quickly paced so far which is nice, as I vaguely recall finding it arduous the last time I read it. I am pretty sure I didnt finish it, and am hoping to make it all the way through and onto the final instalment (which I‘ve never read) this time around.

Alright, finally time to dig back into the Hazard‘s and the Main‘s. This will definitely be a chunky read, weighing in at 1100 pages! I love #historicalfiction because it takes me out of the here and now, which quite frankly is more depressing every time I check the news. I‘m looking forward to being swept up in the romance. Also Georgia‘s sick of posing for me. 😅 #dogsoflitsy

MCYmermaid Wow. I read a ton of Jakes at one time— decades ago. Very #TBT. 6y
Ddzmini Tell me about it but I‘m sure if you asked them they didn‘t like their times either 😨😰 6y
Jabberwocky @Ddzmini Oh I‘m sure. And I 100% would not like to live through the American civil war, it‘s just reassuring somehow to read about another time and place where I already know what the out come is. 6y
Ddzmini True true and you don‘t have to worry about any of the hard parts right I love history 😋 6y
