Gods in Alabama
Gods in Alabama | Joshilyn Jackson
For 10 years Arlene has kept her promises, and God has kept His end of the bargain. Until now. When an old schoolmate from Possett turns up at Arlene's door in Chicago asking questions about Jim Beverly, former quarterback and god of Possett High, Arlene's break with her former hometown is forced to an end. At the same time, Burr, her long-time boyfriend, has raised an ultimatum: introduce him to her family or consider him gone. Arlene loves him dearly but knows her lily white (not to mention deeply racist)Southern Baptist family will not understand her relationship with an African American boyfriend. Reluctantly, Arlene bows to the pressure, and she and Burr embark on the long-avoided road trip back home. As Arlene digs through guilt and deception, her patched-together alibi begins to unravel, and she discovers how far she will go for love and a chance at redemption.

I read this because Almost Sisters was pressed into my hands by a friend last summer, and I loved it, so I've been wanting to try more from this author. This one was great as well! I'll definitely pick more of hers up!

The ending did NOT disappoint! I really liked the audiobook version. I didn‘t grow up in a small town, but I have relatives who did and this seems to really nail that small town vibe regarding teenage popularity and those who think they can do whatever they want.

“There are gods in Alabama - Jack Daniels, high school quarterbacks, trucks, big tits, and also Jesus.”

What an opening line! Over halfway through listening to this book and thoroughly enjoying it. Sure hope the ending doesn‘t disappoint!

"There are gods in Alabama. I know, cause I killed one of them" If that line doesn't hook you in, Jackson's pure Southern charm will. For anyone born and raised below the Mason Dixon Line, you are sure to find a member or two of your family in this book. A murder mystery wraps itself around this family like kudzu and the truth must be found in the midst of the vines.

It‘s a wonderful terrible book. A bit on the drugstore variety of books. Just well written enough to keep you reading, but felt very cliche.

Southern novel where Arlene finally goes back home to face her past with a family that has all its flaws. Set in Alabama, this story shows how Arlene grew up with her cousin who together shared teenage secrets. She takes her African American boyfriend south even though she is ashamed of how they may accept him. Honest Southern novel, goes back and forth from past to present.

Seeing today‘s card, I immediately thought of this book and the jumping in a car/chariot as part of a deal with the gods to move onward and upward.

Back to some Southern literature. I wish I had this on audio, though—she‘s a great storyteller in voice and word.

Just finished this three hours ahead of my book club meeting. The book surprised me from the start. It was not the story I was expecting when I picked it up. And what an ending, finding out Aunt Flo killed him. I have met Joshilyn before at a conference and have been meaning to pick up something by her for ages. I will definitely read anything else by her, because this was a great read.

LiteraryinLawrence My favorite by her is The Almost Sisters! 6y

I am re-reading all of Joshilyn Jackson‘s books in order of publication. This is the first. I love her writing style that can be simultaneously warped and insightful, and her unique take on the effects of historically Southern issues on contemporary life.

I loved The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson so I was excited to go back to one of her earlier books. The overall themes between the two stories were way too similar. I also didn‘t like any of the characters. This was a dud for me.

Finished this audio up today. I really enjoyed this one, first time with this author. Also enjoyed the narration, I think it added to the story. 3.5-4 ⭐️

This reminds me of what someone told my daughter before she left for Ole Miss - “Those Southern boys want the same thing as any other boy, they just sound sweeter when they‘re asking you for it!”
She knows what he‘s saying is naughty but his voice must make her just melt.

🌟🌟🌟/5 I decided to read this after reading The Almost Sisters. This book was so-so; a good story but depth of characters weren't there as much as it was in The Almost Sisters. Still....an entertaining read.

If you get anywhere near Foley, Alabama don't miss this enchanting little Copper Kettle Tea Bar. So many teas, delicious scones, lunch, desserts, and charming hosts. It has been transformed into a French cafe just for February. #booksandtea #bookandtea #tea #teaandbooks A perfect place to chat and read while waiting for my praline almond scone right out of the oven. There are goddesses in Alabama 😉 My first Joshilyn Jackson; but, not my last.
