Chasing Shakespeares
Chasing Shakespeares: A Novel | Sarah Smith
14 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
From an author the San Francisco Chronicle hails as "daring and splendid" comes an exhilarating novel of passion and ideas that cuts to the heart of one of literature's most fascinating and enduring mysteries: the enigma of Shakespeare. Meet Joe Roper, tough-minded young graduate student, who has been lucky enough to land a job cataloging the famed Kellogg Collection of Elizabethan texts and curiosities. Joe's been passionate about Shakespeare since he read a duct-taped paperback at age nine and found the witches, warriors, murders, and ghosts as much fun as Stephen King, but his working-class roots make him a fish out of water in the academic world. He is seemingly as far from adventure as it's possible to be -- until the delicious Posy Gould enters, stage right. A glamorous rising star at Harvard, she insists that a letter Joe has found, signed by one W. Shakespeare of Stratford, is a career-making discovery for them both -- because the letter says Shakespeare didn't write the plays. To Joe's mind, the letter is a forgery. When Posy insists they test it, the two literary sleuths head for England to prove their clashing theories. But they find themselves in a world where the London Eye looks out over Shakespeare's city, Hollywood producers rub elbows with Elizabethan spies, and mystery shadows the heart of Westminster Abbey and the lanes of rural England. And Joe and Posy find that, when you start chasing Shakespeares, what you find is not only who he was, but who you are, and how far you're willing to go.... A first-rate mystery from one of the masters of the genre, Chasing Shakespeares is also a literary shell game, a love story, and a profound meditation on identity and ownership. Sarah Smith has created a novel that rivals A. S. Byatt's Possession in its rich and fast-moving blend of literary history and page-turning suspense.

😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #LitsyHumor

CarolynM 😂 The Comedy of Errors, Also Much Ado About Nothing even Hamlet. In fact, is there a Shakespearean play (other than the histories) that this doesn't apply to? 5y
TsundokuAleax My favorite is how in Complete Works they just blend the comedies into one play because the tragedies are more fun. 5y

I went to the National Portrait Gallery today and easily saw every British author I studied over the last four years of uni. Pretty surreal and mind boggling! 📚😁

CocoReads Hey one of those is in my neck of the woods! Shakespeare at Notre Dame. I‘ve not been but if I remember, I‘ll have to wander down and check it out. 6y
TsundokuAleax So the theatre I work at is actually part of this association and the current President is my boss and one of the founders. 6y
TsundokuAleax Forgot to clarify, she and her husband founded the theatre not the association. 6y
GripLitGrl Very cool! Summer fun🙌 6y

A friend of mine took some students to Europe over spring break. We met for dinner last night and she brought me back treasures. Bookmarks from Dublin, Paris, Stratford-upon-Avon, the Globe, and a magnet from London! Love them and can‘t wait to use them!

merelybookish Fun! What a great friend! 6y
CocoReads @merelybookish she really is! I totally wasn‘t expecting treasures! 6y

Comment Below With Your Play Suggestion and/or group lead wishes. 🎭👑🎭

Jess_Read_This I‘m happy to read just about any of the plays. I‘ve been wanting to read The Taming of The Shrew though. 6y
TheBookHippie Orthello is on my #Litsyclassics 🙌🏻🤣📖 I'll read anything though! 6y
Jess_Read_This @TheBookHippie I like the idea of Othello too! (And bonus if it helps with the classics!) 6y

batsy I'm truly OK with anything! It's just been fun discovering or rediscovering plays :) 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m going to tag @Gezemice here, she was thinking about joining us. 6y
Izai.Amorim Thanks. At the moment I can‘t commit to any buddy read, sorry. But I‘ll try to follow the discussions. 👍👍 6y
Erin7 Both of those are high on my tbr. If I had to choose between the two though I would be up for 6y
cocomass I love love love Taming of the Shrew. Since we‘re doing a comedy now, I wouldn‘t mind doing Othello first then looping back to TotS next. 6y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for the tag! Yes, Othello is on my list to read this month. I am getting ready to read The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore, which is based in the Merchant of Venice and Othello. I have read The Merchant of Venice a month ago, amd loved it. Othello is next. I have seen it and know the story, but have not yet read it. 6y
readinginthedark @Izai.Amorim We‘ve missed you on the discussions! Glad to know you‘re following along, though. 6y
readinginthedark Sounds like...Othello, then Taming of the Shrew...and then maybe a history, since we haven‘t read any of those yet? So funny, I‘ve been thinking about Othello a lot lately, and then so has everyone else apparently! 6y
GingerAntics For history plays, I really like the Richards. I‘ve never read Othello, but I‘ve always meant to. I have a special attachment to MacBeth because it was the first Shakespeare I ever read (and I really love the idea of the curse lol). 6y
GingerAntics LOOK, I got through a whole post of Shakespeare plays without mentioning a Danish Prince. (...now which one of these bloody emojis is supposed to be proud of myself...) 6y
Lcsmcat I‘m happy to read any of them (and I think they all count as classics @TheBookHippie ) but I haven‘t read as many of the histories as the tragedies and comedies, so that might be fun. 6y
JennAndrew I‘d be very happy with Othello next. I haven‘t read that one, so I‘m keen! Also happy to follow with Taming of the Shrew. It‘s a good excuse to watch my favourite teen movie, not that anyone ever needs an excuse to watch 10 Things I Hate About You! 😄 6y
JennAndrew I‘m also a big MacBeth fan- I love the witches. I‘m getting a big Shakespeare tattoo this year & we‘re starting in July (my tattooist lives far away so we‘re meeting at a convention in the middle) with Yorick‘s skull & the witches, so it‘ll be good inspiration/ excitement building! 6y
TheBookHippie Macbeth is my favorite :) @readinginthedark oh yes and it's on Netflix right now !! 😂🙌🏻💗 6y
readinginthedark @TheBookHippie 😆Oh, that makes sense! 6y
Jess_Read_This @Izai.Amorim I agree with @readinginthedark We have missed you but are so happy you are following along too. Always happy to have you join in when you can. I tagged you bc I didn‘t want to leave anyone out and never mean for anyone to feel pressured. ☺️ 6y
Jess_Read_This @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank for tagging @Gezemice 💐We are so happy to have you join us! 6y
Jess_Read_This @cocomass I think that sounds like a good suggestion! 6y
Jess_Read_This @JennAndrew I am so with you... I love any excuse to watch Ten Things I Hate About You as well. One of most favorite movies. I am down for Othello and Macbeth as well. There are too many great options! I can‘t wait to see your tattoo! I love the ideas you‘ve mentioned for it. (edited) 6y
TheBookHippie @Lcsmcat I meant on my classic challenge for #litsyclassics yes all are classics :) 6y
Izai.Amorim @Jess_Read_This Thank you! Very kind! 6y
InLibrisVeritas I am on board with Othello and with TotS after that 6y
merelybookish Also happy to read whatever! Also, I would be happy to host, maybe not this round but the next one? 6y
Jess_Read_This @merelybookish Oh cool!! I‘m so glad you are interested in hosting! I think it is looking like Othello next then Taming of the Shrew. Does TotS work well for you? I‘m tagging @readinginthedark so she knows you are interested too. ☺️ It‘s been so much fun for me! 6y
readinginthedark @merelybookish @Jess_Read_This 👍🏻We‘ll probably do a history third, if you want something more dramatic than TotS. 😊Happy to have you on board! We also message some on Goodreads to flesh things out, so you‘re welcome to do that or email me at readinginthedark1988@outlook.com 6y
BookishBelle I like the idea of Othello next and then TotS. A history after that would be nice. I‘ve never read any of them. 😮 6y
BookishBelle @JennAndrew @Jess_Read_This I love 10 Things I Hate About You too! Such a great movie! 6y
JaclynW I would love The Taming of the Shrew! My life hasn't cooperated with me reading As You Like It. I've read Act 1 and watched 35 minutes of one of the old movies....😕 I'm determined to read with this group!!! I REALLY want to finish more Shakespeare. Maybe I can be better with this next month. 🤞🤞🤞 6y
GingerAntics @JaclynW welcome to the group...we‘ve got you covered. Turned out this particular play made it hard to get through, too. 6y
GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This Okay so Othello next. Good. I checked out an audio version of the play yesterday. I‘ve never read TotS. I love 10 Things I Hate About You, but I‘ve always avoided the book because I fear it will alter my view of the movie (it‘s one of my favourite Heath Ledger movies). I‘m game for this. 6y
GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This As far as the history plays, since I‘m a British historian (to be), I‘ve always wanted to read all of them, and compare them to the actual history. I‘ve read one or two. I‘ve actually seen one, which was amazing. I definitely have some suggestions when the time comes for that. 6y
Jess_Read_This @GingerAntics Yep! Othello then TotS. I have the exact same fear about TotS altering my view of the movie. I love it so much. I think the third one will be a history- so suggest away! Especially since you are a British historian (to be).. how cool!! Are you specializing in a certain time period? Also, if you want to host one of the histories if you have a favorite, you totally can! Just let me or @readinginthedark know! 6y
Jess_Read_This @JaclynW It‘s definitely on deck after Othello. We figured spacing two comedies out. @GingerAntics was right, this one was a different one that I think didn‘t jive with a lot of us. Join in when you can! 💕 6y
readinginthedark @GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This Yeah, 10 Things I Hate about You takes a much more feminist-friendly approach to the original, so that will be interesting... And I‘d love to hear some suggestions for the histories! I‘ve only read Julius Caesar, if that counts. 6y
GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This The Early Modern period...I focus more on the 1700‘s, but Shakespeare is a personal obsession, so you can probably add in the Shakespeare years. lol I‘ll have to think about which one is my favourite and then let you know. That could be fun!!! 6y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark that totally counts!!! I‘m going to have to go refer to my master list, but off the top of my head I‘ve only read Julius Caesar (totally scared for life by the “ Friends, Romans, Countrymen” oratory) and Richard II. Technically MacBeth counts as both a history and a tragedy, so I guess I‘ve read three. I‘ll check my master list after my run. 6y
merelybookish @Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark I'm game to do whatever. Timing is more important...so June/July/August- ish. If that means ToTS, fine by me. As for history plays...Richards are fun. :) 6y
JaclynW @GingerAntics Thank you! What in particular made As You Like It tough to get through? I'm curious! I was hoping to keep reading and finish, it just wouldn't be with this group's timeline (unfortunately). 6y
JaclynW @Jess_Read_This Sounds good! And thank you, thank you!! 😊😊😊 6y
GingerAntics @JaclynW a bunch of little things. It‘s definitely on the lower end of my ranking of Shakespeare plays. It‘s actually the first one I haven‘t really liked. It was just kind of weird. I don‘t want to give too much away. None of it was like I expected from a Shakespeare play, I guess. 6y
JaclynW @GingerAntics Hmmm. Good to know. Thanks! 6y
GingerAntics @JaclynW good luck 6y
GingerAntics Oh it‘s not a history play, but it sounds REALLY fun!!! Comedy of Errors. (Still working on a good place to start with the histories.) What I really needed though, @Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark when do we start Othello? No idea why, but I am very excited about this one. lol 6y
readinginthedark @GingerAntics Sorry, my bad—posting the schedule now! And I‘m extra excited about this one, too! Maybe because it seems soooooo intense! 🤔😁🤓 6y
GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This okay I‘ve done my research and it seems most scholars suggest reading the histories Richard II - Henry V, then Henry VI - Richard III. Apparently all the plays from Richard II - Henry V are all about everyone not getting over the first scene of RII. Since they know what they‘re talking about, I say we start there. Thoughts? 6y
Jess_Read_This @GingerAntics That totally works for me! I‘d be down to read them in this order 6y
GingerAntics @Jess_Read_This I totally think we need to stick some comedies in between, though. lol 6y
Jess_Read_This @GingerAntics lol! Most definitely. 6y
