The Life to Come | Michelle De Kretser
24 posts | 20 read | 24 to read
I so much admire Michelle de Kretser's formidable technique - her characters feel alive, and she can create a sweeping narrative which encompasses years, and yet still retain the sharp, almost hallucinatory detail.' Hilary Mantel 'Michelle de Kretser knows how to construct a gripping story. She writes quickly and lightly of wonderful and terrible things...A master storyteller.' A.S. Byatt Set in Sydney, Paris and Sri Lanka, The Life to Come is a mesmerising novel about the stories we tell and don't tell ourselves as individuals, as societies and as nations. It feels at once firmly classic and exhilaratingly contemporary. Pippa is a writer who longs for success. Celeste tries to convince herself that her feelings for her married lover are reciprocated. Ash makes strategic use of his childhood in Sri Lanka but blots out the memory of a tragedy from that time. Driven by riveting stories and unforgettable characters, here is a dazzling meditation on intimacy, loneliness and our flawed perception of other people. Profoundly moving as well as wickedly funny, The Life to Come reveals how the shadows cast by both the past and the future can transform, distort and undo the present. This extraordinary novel by Miles Franklin-winning author Michelle de Kretser will strike to your soul. '...one of those rare writers whose work balances substance with style. Her writing is very witty, but it also goes deep, informed at every point by a benign and far-reaching intelligence.' Kerryn Goldsworthy, Sydney Morning Herald '...a dazzlingly accomplished author who commands all the strokes. Her repertoire stretches from a hallucinatory sense of place to a mastery of suspense, sophisticated verbal artistry and a formidable skill in navigating those twisty paths where history and psychology entwine.' I really enjoyed this book! Although I don‘t know how to review it! There isn‘t much of a plot. It is more a book about some characters that are loosely connected. Beautiful writing and wonderful descriptions of places and people. A friend recommended this author to me and I will definitely be reading more.

It has taken me a while to get through this book. My concentration and not finding time to sit and read. However managed to finish this cold, wet and windy day. This book reminded me very much of Elizabeth Strouds Olive books. Just with an Australian setting. Similar set up of chapters and writing that is a pleasure to read.

I gave it a try. I had to DNF. I think I needed more insider Australian information to get it in most places. 🤷

Sitting outside on this nice and breezy although kind of humid day! Have a new bookmark brought home by my hubbie and son who were in the Czech Republic for the last couple of weeks.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. The writing is exquisite and the characters and setting are so precisely observed. All things that would usually make me love a book. But I really didn‘t like the MC and there was not nearly enough narrative to hold the story together. It read more like disparate stories with only the loosest connections. Even so I give it a pick, but only just.

I‘ve had this on my TBR for quite a while and then it turned up on my audiobook app. I have to admit, though, that I‘m struggling to follow it. Too many characters to get my head around. It might have been better in hard copy as the writing is lovely.

Freespirit It's in my TBR pile too! 5y

I found this book terrific and a little unusual. Not much happens, but it is more a critique of modern society, revealing the absurdity and negativity of casual racism, social media, and the primacy of appearances with moments of laugh out loud humor. It weaves various characters in and out throughout. It left me with a lot of food for thought.

Ok, so I really wanted to like this. It recently won the Miles Franklin award. The author follows me on Instagram & ‘likes‘ my posts - so, conflict of interest? 😬
I did like it - phew. The prose is exceptionally good. However I felt the interlocking stories across multiple countries didn‘t ‘come together‘ as well as they could have. Still, a great exploration of the lives of disparate characters. Astute observations too.

“...Celeste had fled barbecued chops and an abomination called salad cream. She had fled the AMP building, the hot, flat streets, the catastrophic light.”

In describing where I live in Perth Western Australia, De Kretser got the “hot flat streets, the catastrophic light” right, but “salad cream”? Was this a thing in Perth 30 years ago? I moved here from Melbourne about that time. I‘ve never had salad cream and think of it as a British thing. 🤔

TrishB We certainly had it in Britain 30 years ago! But no idea where else! 6y
CarolynM No salad cream in Australia to the best of my knowledge - I only ever heard of it in British TV programs. In my family we had salad dressing made by mixing mustard powder and vinegar into condensed milk😂😂😂 6y
Rissreads Nope, never heard of it! 6y

Winner! Winner! Of the 2018 #MilesFranklinAward 🇦🇺📚👍. Have it on my #tbr bedside table. Need to bump it up the list. #ozfiction

CarolynM Oh dear. I read Questions of Travel and found it really frustrating - one of those books where I felt there was a much better novel trying to get out. I don't think I'm going to be in a hurry to read this one. 6y
Tashreads @CarolynM - I bailed on Questions of Travel, so I‘m not sure about this one either. 6y
quirkyreader Now only if a US publisher would print the winners. Most of the books I have by Australian authors were found in charity shops. 6y

JennyM I didn‘t like this one either I‘m sorry to say. I found it boring and couldn‘t wait to get it over with. And I was so looking forward to it after waiting ages for a library hold. Hopefully you enjoy it more that I did. Let us know your thoughts x 6y
MrsMalaprop That‘s annoying @quirkyreader There‘s always BookDep I guess? 6y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM @Tashreads @JennyM Oh, that‘s a shame. I‘ve not read Questions of Travel. Will certainly let you know my thoughts once I‘ve read this one. 😊 6y
CarolynM @quirkyreader Is there anything you particularly want? I'd be love to send you some Australian literature. In my opinion the Prime Minister's and Premiers' Awards often go to better books than the Miles Franklin or Stella. 6y
CarolynM @MrsMalaprop I look forward to seeing your review of this one. 6y
quirkyreader @CarolynM Thank you for the offer. As soon as I peg down which book I am looking for I will let you know. 6y

I‘m about 15 pages in, and LITERALLY every paragraph I‘ve read so far has been joyfully, ridiculously quotable. The writing has mesmerized me, swept me off my feet.

Mehso-so

This started off so well, then it just fizzled out for me. I can see why this was shortlisted for the Stella prize, but I just found it a bit boring. Maybe a case of wrong time, but it was just mhew for me. 😕

#aussiesrule2018

CarolynM I felt a bit like that about her book that won the Miles Franklin, Questions of Travel. There was some good stuff in there, but it never really came together for me. I felt like there was a better book in there struggling to get out! 6y
JennyM @CarolynM that‘s exactly how I feel. It got a bit too introspective for me. 6y

Thanks to @Catapult @CatapultStory for mailing me this beautiful new hardcover of Michelle De Kretser‘s latest book! It‘s up for the Stella Prize this year. I can‘t wait to read it after loving her novella Springtime a couple years ago. It‘s out in the US on March 13. ☀️
