Hard Times Require Furious Dancing
Hard Times Require Furious Dancing: New Poems | Alice Walker
13 posts | 7 read | 19 to read
Though we have encountered our share of grief and troubles on this earth, we can still hold the line of beauty, form, and beat. No small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one. from the preface "I was born to grow, / alongside my garden of plants, / poems / like / this one So writes Alice Walker in this new book of poems, poems composed over the course of one year in response to joy and sorrow both personal and global: the death of loved ones, war, the deliciousness of love, environmental devastation, the sorrow of rejection, greed, poverty, and the sweetness of home. The poems embrace our connections while celebrating the joy of individuality, the power we each share to express our truest, deepest selves. Beloved for her ability to speak her own truth in ways that speak for and about countless others, she demonstrates that we are stronger than our circumstances. As she confronts personal and collective challenges, her words dance, sing, and heal.

I'm going through some of the hardest times I have had, and many of these poems were exactly what I needed. I didn't love every poem, and normally don't prefer single word limes, but the ones I connected with shook me to my core. This was just what I needed right now. My favourite was I Will Not Deny. Illustrations were fantastic too.

DebinHawaii Hope things get better for you soon. Hugs. 💜 6y
elizabethlk @DebinHawaii Thanks. Things are rough now, and it's a rough road ahead, but I am hopeful for the future. 6y

This ‘poetry‘ is nothing but the most unbearably schlocky new age greeting card sentimentality – so utterly awful it makes Rupi Kaur seem profound! I haven‘t read any of Alice Walker‘s fiction; I hear it‘s great, or at least some of it is. She should stick to that genre.

britt_brooke 😆 Glad I‘m not the only one that didn‘t like Milk and Honey. 6y
Louise Oh, my! Now you've made me curious! 😂😂😂 Like you, I've heard such good things about her novels and have enjoyed interviews she has given. Hmmm. (edited) 6y
Shemac77 I absolutely adore your honesty. 6y

batsy I've yet to read her but from what I understand her work did go through several phases. Her early work is supposed to be good. I think around the 2000s she was influenced by some New Age practices and showed dodgy support for the work of a conspiracy theorist whose name I can't remember... Something about how the human mind is controlled from space 😬 6y
emilyhaldi Definitely going to start using “schlocky” more frequently 6y
quietlycuriouskate "makes Rupi Kaur seem profound"... Ye gods! 6y

Yup, that's about as profound and poetic as this collection gets. (facepalm)

melissajayne I thought of a U2 song when I saw the post. 6y
shawnmooney @melissajayne I am sure her fiction is better but these are some of the worst poems I've ever read (not including my own)! 😂😂 6y
Marchpane @melissajayne or Bob Marley! 6y

Found this ebook of poetry on Scribd - 181 pages but the first poem puts one word on each line - bodes well for my actually getting all the way thru!

elizabethlk I actually checked this one out of the library just a few days ago! 6y

Flashback to my #firsteverlitsypost five months ago when I met Alice Walker and she said, "You're welcome very much," while looking into my eyes. I'm still trembling. #signedsundays #booktober #poetry
