The Vatican Cameos: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure
The Vatican Cameos: A Sherlock Holmes Adventure | Richard T. Ryan
24 posts | 8 read | 18 to read
When the papal apartments are burgled in 1901, Sherlock Holmes is summoned to Rome by Pope Leo XII. After learning from the pontiff that several priceless cameos that could prove compromising to the church, and perhaps determine the future of the newly unified Italy, have been stolen, Holmes is asked to recover them. In a parallel story, Michelangelo, the toast of Rome in 1501 after the unveiling of his Pieta, is commissioned by Pope Alexander VI, the last of the Borgia pontiffs, with creating the cameos that will bedevil Holmes and the papacy four centuries later. For fans of Conan Doyles immortal detective, the game is always afoot. However, the great detective has never encountered an adversary quite like the one with whom he crosses swords in The Vatican Cameos..

A well done Sherlock Holmes mystery. I particularly liked the flavor of this one. It felt fresh in that it was not set in London but in Rome, followed two time lines and didn't involve a murder. While not unique, it was refreshing different. In this tale, Holmes is tasked with finding a group of cameos done by the famous artist Michelangelo that was stolen from the Vatican. These are works that could ruin the church of the public finds out...

TheSpineView ⭐about them. Time is of the essence and secrecy is a must. Holmes to rescue! 4 ⭐ 3y
Moray_Reads I love it when people do the cases that ACD mentions but never wrote, so fun 3y

Another wonderful Sherlock Holmes pastiche by @Richryan52 ! I enjoyed this immensely. I love the dual timeline (1901 & 1501), the clever plot & suspenseful writing. It's a well-researched and engaging read!

Rating: 4.5🌟

I just read this Sherlock novel, thanks to @Richryan52 ! It is set in alternating timelines, 1501 & 1901. Sherlock & John are summoned by the pope to recover some stolen cameos, which were supposed to be a secret, carved by Michelangelo on papal commission—hence the 2nd story line. A 3rd narrative line threw me a bit, but this was a great story and obviously well-researched. I recommend to Sherlock Holmes fans and lovers of historical fiction.

Ryan does an excellent job creating an intriguing historical fiction. The plot was believable and the suspense kept building.
Having only watched Sherlock Holmes, I can't comment on how true to the original Ryan was in this endeavor, but I kept seeing Bendict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in my mind as I was reading this.
If you're a fan of Sherlock or enjoy the historical fiction genre, this is a worthwhile read.

In a bit of shameless self-promotion and a pun I get to use but once a year: just remember there‘s no place like Holmes for the holidays (Amazon was discounting the hardcover version of this book)

4/5 I found this an enjoyable Holmes tale. I liked the format between 1901 with the Pope & Holmes and the 1501 historical background with Michelangelo. The historical intrigue was fascinating and felt real.

The Vatican Cameos finds Sherlock Holmes working in behalf of the pope. The odd chapters are set in1901 Rome while the even chapters take place in 1501 Rime and are told from the point of view of the artist Michelangelo. Since I wrote it, I am biased. I would appreciate any and all feedback
