Most blacks automatically put on a mask around whites, a veil that hid the “dead-weight of social degradation” that scholar W.E.B. Du Bois gave voice to so eloquently in The Souls of Black Folk. The mask offered protection against the constant reminders of being at once American, and the American dilemma. It obscured the anger that blacks knew could have life-changing—even life-ending—consequences if displayed openly.

4⭐️

The Space Race and NASA are two things every American grows up learning about or has lived to experience it. Even though it‘s so well know, due to political tensions with racial equality, the stories of many important women were left behind in history without getting the recognition they deserve. The book tells the important store of the white and black female computers who worked at NACA (NASA) and the extremely vital roles they played.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I know this is a picture of the DVD but I can‘t get my picture of the book to load so this will have to do 🤪 I am very glad I finally got around to reading this book. It really opened my mind a little more while rewatching the movie because I know even more factual information about the social unrest going on at the same time this super patriotic moment in history was occurring. It was a little boring in spots though ⬇️

“The distance between the NACA‘s discovery of new aerodynamic concepts and their application to pressing engineering problems was so short, and the pace of the research and development so constant, that an entry-level position at the laboratory was the best engineering graduate school program in the world.“

One book down for this vacation and so many to go. Listened to this one and some of it felt a little tedious. But overall a really great story.

At some points I'm racing through these pages and others I'm rereading and confused. I feel like the structure of this book is a bit muddled.

Cinfhen I bailed on the book 🙈but loved the movie 7y
Aswenson @Cinfhen I might have bailed if this weren't a book club pick! It's getting better... but I have to "assign" myself small page increments. Fun, right? ? 7y
Laura317 I had a difficult time with the book as well. I also bailed. I agree with @Cinfhen that the movie was great. 7y

Aswenson @Laura317 The movie will be my reward for finishing. :) *cracks knuckles* (edited) 7y
Cinfhen Sometimes bookclub can be a buzzkill @Aswenson good for you for not bailing 🙌🏻 7y
Suet624 I listened to it. That made it easier to get through some of the less interesting passages. 7y
