Bettencourt Affair: The World's Richest Woman and the Scandal That Rocked Paris
Bettencourt Affair: The World's Richest Woman and the Scandal That Rocked Paris | Tom Sancton
15 posts | 13 read | 80 to read
Was the world's wealthiest woman--Liliane Bettencourt--heir to an estimated thirty-six-billion-dollar L'Oreal fortune, the victim of a con man? Or were her own family the real villains? This riveting narrative tells the real-life, shocking story behind the cause celebre that has captivated both France and the world. Liliane Bettencourt is the world's richest woman and the eleventh wealthiest person on the planet, as of 2016. But at ninety-four, she's embroiled in an incredible controversy that has dominated the headlines and ensnared a former president of France in the controversy. Why? Thanks to an artist and photographer named Francois-Marie Banier, who was given hundreds of millions of dollars by Liliane. Liliane's daughter, Francoise, considers Banier a con man and filed a lawsuit against him, but Banier has a far different story to tell. It's all become Europe's biggest scandal in years, uncovering a shadowy corporate history, buried World War II secrets, illicit political payoffs, and much more. Written by Tom Sancton, a Vanity Fair contributor and former Time correspondent currently living in France, The Bettencourt Affair is part courtroom drama; part upstairs-downstairs tale; part business narrative of a glamorous global company with past Nazi connections; and part character-driven story of a complex, fascinating family and the intruder who nearly tore it apart.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Story of the world‘s wealthiest woman and the man she gave hundreds of millions of Euros to, maybe willingly, maybe by being taken advantage of. Lots of interesting bits, but also lots of details that could be hard to follow.

This was a really interesting book about Liliane Bettencourt- the heiress to the L‘Oréal fortune and the man she gave millions to.

This book covers the founding of L‘Oréal and the early life of Liliane and then her marriage and the birth of her daughter. It‘s main focus is the friendship between her and Benier, and artist she gave a fortune to. Her daughter ended up filing suit against him for taking advantage of her mother.

Lauren_reading It‘s interesting what everyone will do for money and it‘s hard to trust that anyone had Liliane‘s best interests at heart. 3y

5⭐️ Biography/True Crime/History tale about Lillian Bettencourt and the scandal known as "The Bettencourt Affair." Lillian's daughter sees her inheritance being gifted away and sues for guardianship. The fallout involves a famous photographer, L'Oreal, crooked financiers, shady staff, lots of property, a private island, greedy lawyers, and even former French president Sarkozy. Betrayal, intrigue and fortune abound. Recommended! #nonfiction

I've been off Litsy for a couple of weeks because the husband and I vacationed in Oregon. Here's some of the loot!

Cathythoughts Nice loot 👍🏻❤️ 6y
Tomigirl44 I was in Oregon briefly in July; isn‘t Powell‘s amazing?! I didn‘t stay long but loved it - can‘t wait to go back. I was also in Cannon Beach for an hour or so (yarn store & taffy shop) but didn‘t know they had a bookstore. Did you happen to stop at the bookstore in Seaside? It‘s lovely. Looks like you had a good time 😊 6y
night_shift I haven't been out to the Cannon Beach bookstore yet. I've heard it's nice. How was it? 6y

cathysaid @Tomigirl44 The owner of the inn where we were staying recommended the bookstore in Seaside as well but we didn't make it there. She also said several authors live in Manzanita. 6y
cathysaid @UnidragonFrag I was very impressed by their collection of books. Carefully curated and owned by true book lovers. 6y
cathysaid @Pamwurtzler Isn't it? I loved that all business has to be independently owned. Great brewery there, too! 6y

Penny_LiteraryHoarders It was!!! I read this one. Couldn't BELIEVE the money tossed about. I still have sworn off L'Oreal Maybelline and Lancome products after reading. The Body Shop is owned by them too. 😭 6y
Zelma Sounds like a perfect audiobook for traveling. 👍 6y

This book is about the Bettencourt Family, who one L'Oreal, Lancome and other entites. It is based on jealousy, greed, vengeance, and retribution. A story about money and the abuse of it. The founder of L'OREAL is Eugene Schuller, who during WII, a masses a huge fortune by helping the Nazis. His only child, Liliane Schuller Bettencourt, the world's richest woman, is who the book is about. A very interesting read.

Wow what happens when people have more money than they could ever know what to do with it. Pretty cautious now about using L'Oreal, Lancôme, Maybelline and The Body Shop products (which pains me - I love The Body Shop) given L'Oreal's founder (Liliane's father) and Liliane's husband's ties to Nazis but really because in all those pages I never once read anything about L'Oreal being a charitable company. Spent it all on them & buying politicians

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Themselves, the guy that Liliane was in love with - the guy at the centre of this scandal and buying political favours and buying off employees from exposing scandals. 7y

25 pages in and I'm hooked. Did you know the founder of L'Oreal was a Nazi collaborator? Between the years 1940-1944 L'Oreal quadrupled it's sales. He also owned a paint factory that supplied the German military. L'Oreal owns Lancome, The Body Shop, Maybelline and of course L'Oreal. This kept me awake last night. 😳Lilianne's (L'Oreal heiress) husband was also a Nazi sympathizer.

TrishB There are many big companies that collaborated with the nazis that are still going now. Do a search on the net you will be horrified. 7y

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

It's easy to be fascinated by a scandal when it doesn't involve anyone or anything you particularly care about, and this is one of those things for me. The best part of this were the insights into the French people's relationship with and perceptions of immensely wealthy people, and how that affects their politics.
