Till We Have Faces
Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold | C. S. Lewis
I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer . . . Why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces? Haunted by the myth of Cupid and Psyche throughout his life, C.S. Lewis wrote this, his last, extraordinary novel, to retell their story through the gaze of Psyches sister, Orual. Disfigured and embittered, Orual loves her younger sister to a fault and suffers deeply when she is sent away to Cupid, the God of the Mountain. Psyche is forbidden to look upon the gods face, but is persuaded by her sister to do so; she is banished for her betrayal. Orual is left alone to grow in power but never in love, to wonder at the silence of the gods. Only at the end of her life, in visions of her lost beloved sister, will she hear an answer. "Till We Have Faces succeeds in presenting with imaginative directness what its author has described elsewhere as the divine, magical, terrifying and ecstatic reality in which we all live . . . [It] deepens for adults that sense of wonder and strange truth which delights children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and other legends of Narnia." New York Times "The most significant and triumphant work that Lewis has . . . produced." New York Herald Tribune

I enjoyed it, but I think I had greater expectations. I still love CS Lewis and was surprised that this didn't hit me harder.

Good read, though.

A few reviews said this book was difficult to read and dense but worth the read. The only part of this that I agree with is that it‘s worth the read. This is the Cupid and Psyche story told from the point of view of one of Psyche‘s sisters. It dragged in a few places, but only a few. I found it to be very readable and loved the twist on the myth.

My husband and I went to the beach today, and I was involved with three stories. 😊 Wolves of the Calla is our road trip book; Till We Have Faces was my beach read; and Sullivan‘s Island replaces Desperation as my walking book (until January 19 anyway). It was such a lovely day today! #audiowalk

This was a little different than most Lewis fiction, being a re-telling of the Cupid and Psyche myth. It speaks of the struggles with the understanding of God's ways.

My thankfulness today: 1️⃣ my CrossFit Gym is posting daily Home Wods for home workout👏🏻 2️⃣ starting today, WISD ( district I work for) will be supplying free breakfasts & lunches every day for the children of the community in until kids go back to school. This has been my worry since on shutdown- the many children within my school who do not know where their next meal is coming from / do not have consistent meals. PRAISES 🎉#KeepLitsyPositive

So I was all set to write a post about how excited I was to read this for the #makemereadit readathon and how I couldn't believe I had never read this before, considering how many times I've read the Chronicles of Narnia. But two pages in, I realized this sounded awfully familiar. Apparently I have read this one before, although I remember essentially nothing about it. It's probably been 15 years at least. Guess it's time for a reread!

I love Fantasy, so I'm going to be doing two posts for #agameoffavorites today! First up, the man who was my introduction to the genre by opening the wardrobe doors to a magical land: C.S. Lewis.

A number of sources stated that his favourite of his own works was the tagged book, so hello TBR! But finding his favourite book was difficult, but one scholar suggests that Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene just may have been it (link in comments)

KristinaRay I almost picked him too. Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe was the first fantasy novel I read when I was a kid. It was an incredibly magical experience! 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook Wow, I haven't thought about Till we have faces in years and yet it was a strange but wonderful book! 6y
smilingshelves Till We Have Faces is one I'll be reading for the Make Me Read It readathon, and now I'm even more excited to read it! 6y

There are so many fabulous #irishauthors, especially of classics. My favorite author of all time is C. S. Lewis, and Till We Have Faces is my very favorite book! #marchintoreading

Desha Have you ever seen Till We Have Faces in the theater? One of our local theaters in San Diego (The Lamb's Players) did a rendition of it a few years back...it was very well done! ☺❤ 7y
Celeste57 @Desha I didn't even know that was a thing. 😳 I'll have to look it up! Thank you!! 😄 7y
Desha Yes it seems to be done a few different places! Currently Lambs Players is doing Shadowlands...about Lewis and his wife Joy ☺ I didn't know it was playing...now I want to go see that too! ❤❤ 7y

CarleyKleinPeters Lewis is the very best! Till we have faces was such a wonderful book. So hard to pick a favorite though. Out of the silent planet is exquisite as well. 6y
Celeste57 @CarleyKlein Would you believe that I've never read Lewis's Space Trilogy? I own it, and I've started it multiple times, but I never make it more than a few chapters into the first book before I get distracted. I need to remedy this! 6y
CarleyKleinPeters @Celeste57 true, I‘ve had that hideous strength for a long time and can‘t seem to get through it. But the first two are wonderful. Loved those. 6y

amandacatherine This is one of my favorite books and I find myself returning to it over and over. This retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche has so much to say about what love is and how hard it is to come by true self-knowledge. Possibly Lewis's best work of fiction. 8y

In my opinion, this is C.S. Lewis's best work. I felt that, even though this book focuses on retelling of a pagan myth and mentions nothing of Christianity, it really deepened my faith. This book is definitely for fans of mythology (Greek or otherwise).
