A captivating story about dark truths and heinous crimes as well as unexpected friendships, with detailed black-and-white illustrations throughout. Perfect for fans of mystery and detective stories. Sally Jones is not only a loyal friend, shes an extraordinary individual. In overalls or in a maharajas turban, this unique gorilla moves among humans without speaking but understanding everything. She and the Chief are devoted comrades who operate a cargo boat. A job they are offered pays big bucks, but the deal ends badly, and the Chief is falsely convicted of murder. For Sally Jones this is the start of a harrowing quest for survival and to clear the Chief's name. Powerful forces are working against her, and they will do anything to protect their secrets. From the Hardcover edition.

Grateful to a sizeable distraction. This felt like that kind of adventure story written 100 years ago...though I could have done with a little more anachronistic sensitivity (fatphobia 😬). I honestly didn't think I had the patience for this kind of sprawling tale but it was quite absorbing. Appreciate the question around animal rights/welfare showing up throughout. That's about as much sense as I'm going to make while feeling this icky. 🤧🤒

Wonderful. Wistful, absurdist isn't the right word. Listed as children's and probably accessible to confident younger readers, but at no point did this feel like a children's story despite the fact that a literate gorilla is the protagonist. Even better is that a literate gorilla isn't a normal thing in the story's world but is matter of factly accepted because there's no other option. Just read it and love it. Because you will.

Middle school mystery. It goes on a bit too long but is otherwise a fascinating historical mystery with a gorilla as the narrator!

Utterly charming adventure for children and adults. Sally Jones is a gorilla, and engineer on a steamer. Her captain and friend is falsely convicted of murder, so she sets out to clear his name. She travels from Lisbon to India and back. I loved this. Really fun. Sally Jones is a great character. Beautifully illustrated book too. And that cover 😍

Trip to Hatchards. Love this shop. I thought I was quite restrained.

emilyhaldi I was just reading an article about London bookstores last night and this was mentioned as a must-see! Do you agree?? 6y
Oryx @emilyhaldi yes, it's really old, and lovely. They have a great selection and loads of signed copies. It's one of my favourites. 6y
julesG I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Why ever didn't I take pictures in/of the store? 6y

I completely fell in love with this book! It is a middle grade novel, but is a great read for adults as well. The story and mystery is narrated by the main character, a gorilla named Sally Jones. She spins an incredible and wild yarn on her typewriter about how her best friend and employer is falsely imprisoned for murder and the adventures and friendships she makes as she slowly works towards seeing him free. I hope there is a sequel.

I'm too tired to read anything heavy, so I've dipped into this middle grade novel tonight. It's a beautiful package with gorgeous endpapers and lovely illustrations throughout. The writing level is quite high for middle grade and so far I am enjoying the voice very much.

JaclynW This cover is so unique! It sounds like the story is too. 6y

This looks like a lot of fun. A gorilla must save her human BFF from a false murder charge. I'm anticipating an enjoyable adventure / mystery story and am loving the black-and-white illustrations. A middle grade book from Delacorte Press

Bette Our library just got it too. It looked bizarrely interesting. 😊💜 7y
