#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView Also, thanks for the tag.
1. I enjoyed games with my kids, my closet is full! My youngest still will play Clue on occasion. My favorite ever was The Mad Magazine game, I played with my cousins and we had to bawk like a chicken and do other silly things.
2. Tagged my favorite game movie, which is also a book. The latest with Jack Black and the Rock are hilarious!

TheSpineView Jumanji is a fabulous choice. Totally forgot about that one. 4mo

My first step in recovering from Needful Things was reading Jumanji, this month‘s Book to Movie event at our local book store. It‘s still great all these years later. And not so far away from what King does with his stories if you really think about it…

I was desperately looking for a book written in 1981 for the pop sugar challenge and stumbled upon this and so glad I gave it a go. I had no idea the movie came from a children‘s a book.

This book, that is also a great movie, is about a group of friends who decide to play what they think is just an ordinary board game. However, they soon find out that the board game is far from ordinary as every move they make, something interesting, exciting and dangerous happens. They must reach the end of the game for everything to stop and return to their normal lives. This is a great read and watch. It is very fun and entertaining for kids!

Jumanji is a Caldecott award-winning picture book by Chris Van Allsburg that has spawned many major motion pictures. This book is about a brother and sister duo named Peter and Judy who are playing a game called Jumanji. But what they don‘t know is that this is a magical board game that is brought to life when people play. And once the game is started, it must be finished.

The genre of this book is MF.

Nkaufmann I think this book could be used for readers' theatre (RT) as the students will have a fun time acting out this famous story. They could play one of the animals such as a monkey or a snake, the parents, Peter, or Judy. Overall, this will be a very engaging activity for the students to participate in which will in turn lead to them getting a better understanding of the story. 4y
Nkaufmann The UDL principle 5.3 regarding building fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance and the EL principle 16 regarding integrating speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities, can both be met by this book. This activity will help the students become more fluent readers as they are speaking, listening, and reading. Teachers should support their students while they perform their part. 4y
nquintus Hi Naomi! I really like the idea of using an RT strategy with Jumanji. It would increse fluency and engagement! Nice post! 4y
DrSpalding Using the publisher website is a wise choice. I like that you like the strategy of readers theater and hope you will continuously use this in your future classroom. I would always have readers theater scripts going in my classroom. When students finished an assignment early, they could always practice their parts. Assigning their parts as a homework assignment was also part of my regular practice. 4y

Guys, the library that employs me has just closed until April 6th. This is unprecedented. I have been ill and in isolation for nine days! I'm going stir crazy, but nevertheless, I shall appreciate my freedom once I'm well. If you need a book whilst in lockdown, Raven Bookstore is offering $1 shipping within the US. Stay home, buy a book from an indie shop, and if you're the one playing Jumanji, for the love of glob, bury the game! 😆

Andrew65 I‘m focusing on my own books, ebooks and audiobooks during this time. Get well soon. 🤒 Where are you based? (edited) 4y
SiriuslyWeasley @Andrew65 I understand, but I'm always happy to enable a book purchase from an independent shop, haha. Thank you! I'm in central Ohio and we're just starting to see people testing positive for the virus. My symptoms align, but the doctor didn't have the test at my visit on Monday. 4y
Andrew65 @SiriuslyWeasley There are testing pods to go to across the U.K., even doing it in places whilst you wait in the car. We are now in self-isolation mode. I am principal of a school in Yorkshire, England, and no confirmed cases in our school district as of 9 am but 1 or two confirmed cases at least in neighbouring districts. If anyone has a new continuous cough or a high temperature across the U.K. they need to self-isolate for 7 days. 4y
SiriuslyWeasley @Andrew65 That is a brilliant response! I think the US would do well to follow suit. 4y
Andrew65 @SiriuslyWeasley U.K. government does seem to have a clear strategy which is based on scientific evidence and maths modelling. They inspire confidence and doing things differently to many other countries. I hope their decision making is right. 4y

I love the movie and enjoyed the book even more. Jumanji written & illustrated by: Chris Van Allsburg is a wonderful picture book that has adventure, daring & frightful experiences as well as some life lesson along the way. A book that will have you wanting more. I believe this book is best under MF, RF due to the nature of the book. UDL 4.1 regarding vary the nature for response & navigation along with EL 3 for encourage self talk.#UCFLAE3414F19

Tinks This Picture book was awarded the Caldecott medal and should be added to all elementary classroom libraries as well as be equally read any age group who enjoyed the aspect of the movie. It goes along with school curriculum standards and can be used for a think-aloud as comprehension and fluency teachings. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y

(author/illustrator: Chris Van Allsburg)
Two siblings find an abandoned boardgame one day. After starting, they quickly realize the game isn‘t normal when lions and monkeys and all sorts of jungle dangers begin appearing in their house. This MF makes it feel as if the reader is caught in the action alongside the two siblings as they rush through the dangers, trying to win the game so everything can return back to normal. Caldecott

kgarzon This PB would be great for SR since there are many opportunities to analyze the text in real-time with students. http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/jumanji.shtml
This guide details a writing assignment where students can observe the descriptive language and strong verbs that the author used, discerning how it makes the story more engaging vs “boring” verbs. They can incorporate strong verbs into their own writing.
4y
kgarzon UDL Principle 3.3 (Guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation) is demonstrated with how the teacher guides students in visualizing the strong verbs in action. EL strategy 12 (teach to two objectives, language and content) can be used due to the nature of SR: students and the teacher can revisit this same book multiple times to address a different lesson, alternating between focusing on the language or the content of the story. 4y
DrSpalding The second movie is coming out which will cause more children to be familiar with the book. Savvy teachers should be sharing his work and possibly performing an author study. I like the idea of shared reading and I love the idea of using more engaging verbs in their writing. 4y

Everyone knows the story of what happens when a brother and sister find the magical board game Jumanji. This MF read is about how the game brings to life all of the animals and jungle elements in the game. It is a 1982 Caldecott award winner that would be best suited as an RA, RR or even a RT #UCFLAE3414SU19. Even though this movie scared the heck out of me as a kid, it‘s become one of my favorites.

BeverlyMel You could also conduct an AS on the author so students can know more about his work. https://texasdeafed.org/uploads/files/online-resources/About_the_Author_.pdf. This is a link to an AS activity on Chris Van Allsburg, students can incorporate UDL 4.2 & EL 2 by using the internet to find out about the life & works of Allsburg. 5y
DrSpalding You need the verbiage for your universal design principles and English learner strategies. Beyond that excellent idea to employ an author study on this amazing author illustrator! 5y

This MF written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a good read for children that enjoy suspense and adventure. This book teaches children to always read the instructions and follow rules because not doing so can lead to consequences. In the story, the main characters are siblings who find a magical board and decide to play without reading the instructions which leads them to magically being a part of the game as the game comes to life.

fquadri This book won the Caldecott Medal and is good for PR.
EL strategy 46 can be incorporated with this book and UDL strategy 5.2 can be used so that children can get hands on with completing activities pertaining to the book. This website provides us with exciting lessons and activities that can be used with this book. https://www.teachervision.com/adventure/jumanji-teachers-guide

Estradan I honestly didn‘t know Jumanji was a book until this class. Including a hands on activity like having a game board out could be a cool way to introduce the book. 5y
DrSpalding Great activity! Many students, like some of your peers, do not know that the movies came from quality children‘s literature. This is something your students should know. You now have two VanAllsburg books in your posts. Creating an author study for a third or fourth grade class would be a wise choice as well. 5y

Caldecott and was written in 1981. This story takes place at the children's home. The story continues with the children going to the park and finding the game jumanji. Ince the children got back and started playing all of these things started to happen : a stampede, volcano, a lion, and much more. Judy finished the game by making it to the final place called jumanji.

This Caldecott winner by Chris Van Allsburg is a great F story for the classroom. Now a major motion picture, Peter and Judy think they're playing an ordinary board game until they are transported into a crazy fantasy world. I would use this in my classroom as a RA. UDL principle 2.4 and ESOL strategy 17 would help students with this story.
