Joseph Anton
Joseph Anton | Salman Rushdie
From the author of The Satanic Verses and Midnights Children, which was awarded the Best of the Booker Prize in 1993, comes an unflinchingly honest and fiercely funny account of a life turned upside-down. On Valentines Day, 1989, Salman Rushdie received a telephone call from a BBC journalist that would change his life forever: Ayatollah Khomeini, a leading Muslim scholar, had issued him with a death sentence. This is his own account of how he was forced to live in hiding for over a decade; at once intimate and explosive, this is the personal tale behind the international story. How does a man live with the constant threat of murder? How does he continue to work when deprived of his freedom? How does he sustain friendships, or fall in and out of love? How does he fight back? For over a decade, Salman Rushdie dwelt in a world of secrecy and disguise, a world of security guards and armoured cars, of aliases and code names. In Joseph Anton, Rushdie tells the remarkable story of one of the crucial battles, in our time, for freedom of speech. Shortlisted for the James Tait Black Biography Prize

Started reading this book to get a jump on August‘s #AuthorAMonth and stumbled upon this line. For Pete‘s sake. I can‘t get away from #Clarissa even when I try. 😖

Amiable @Lcsmcat Exactly! I‘ll admit it was a bit of a smug thrill —an “I know what that means! See how smart and well-read I am!” sort of feeling. 😀 9mo

In fiction the symbolism of such a scene would have felt ponderously overweight. But real life sometimes rammed its point home just to make sure you got it.

(Continued)...from it. Strong ideas welcomed dissent. "He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill," wrote Edmund Burke. "Our antagonist is our helper." Only the weak and the authoritarian turned away from their opponents and called them names and sometimes wished to do them harm.

Suet624 I wonder how Rushdie is doing. I think of him often. 2y
keithmalek @Suet624 Supposedly, he's recovering nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing him interviewed again. He let his guard down after awhile, and it will be interesting to see how he responds to this incident. 2y
Suet624 Agreed. 2y
keithmalek @Suet624 He'll probably hire a bodyguard or two, but it won't be how it was years ago, when he had such a need for security that he was practically afforded Secret Service protection. 2y
Suet624 Can you imagine living with the need for constant security? Unreal. 2y

If one spent five years of one's life struggling with a large and complex project, trying to wrestle it to the ground, trying to bring it under control, and give it all the shapely beauty his talent allowed--and if, when it came out, it was received in this ugly, distorted way, then maybe the effort wasn't worth it. If this is what he got for his best effort, then he should perhaps try doing something else.

I just started re-reading Rushdie's autobiography, Joseph Anton, which is one of my all-time favorite books. I've been wanting to read it again since last month's unfortunate stabbing.

Rushdie's stabbing angers me beyond words. His autobiography, "Joseph Anton" is one of my all-time favorite books. At one point, he started to let his guard down. He shouldn't have.

vivastory @Leftcoastzen BY FAR the strangest reading I have ever attended in my life was for the tagged book, the comments made during the Q& A portion. Just wild. I hope he pulls through. I knew that the fatwa was forever, but JFC. Unexpected. I seem to have read/heard about someone else associated with the book, I believe a translator, was attacked recently 2y

“Month of Rushdies“ is a day-by-day acct of the events surrounding the fatwa in Eliot Weinberger's Outside Stories. It stood out to me when I read it yrs ago & in light of yesterday's tragedy I might have to revisit. If interested you can read it here:

#OnThisDay in 1989, Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling on Muslims to execute Salman Rushdie over publication of his novel, The Satanic Verses. A committed leftist, who saw his role as author "as including the function of antagonist to the state" Rushdie was no stranger to controversy, but he never expected the level of backlash he received for this one. The tagged is Rushdie's memoir of this time. #HistoryGetsLIT
