Another Roadside Attraction
Another Roadside Attraction | Tom Robbins
12 posts | 37 read | 13 to read
What if the Second Coming didnt quite come off as advertised? What if the Corpse on display in that funky roadside zoo is really who they say it iswhat does that portend for the future f western civilization? And what if a young clairvoyant named Amanda reestablishes the flea circus as popular entertainment and fertility worship as the principal religious form of our high-tech age? Another Roadside Attraction answers those questions and a lot more. It tell us, for example, what the sixties were truly all about, not by reporting on the psychedelic decade but by recreating it, from the inside out. In the process, this stunningly original seriocomic thriller is fully capable of simultaneously eating a literary hot dog and eroding the borders of the mind. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

This book. Well. I usually never DNF anything but this book really was not for me at all. I read 70ish pages and it felt soooo long already. There is no real story, just random weird snippets. Don‘t get me wrong- I LOVE weird random snippets. But this felt so pointless, boring and pretentious. So, I‘ve decided to give up. I have another Robbins book at home and hope that that one will be better.

TheBookgeekFrau This was not his best book at. All. Jitterbug Perfume was my favorite 7mo
ju.ca.no @TheBookgeekFrau good to know! I also have a copy of 7mo
TheBookgeekFrau @ju.ca.no I liked Still Life with Woodpecker. Highly bizarre and entertaining; but then again, all of his books are bizarre 😂 7mo

dabbe I bailed on it, too, for the exact same reasons! #hailtothebail! 🤩🤩🤩 7mo
ju.ca.no @dabbe it was a really hars decision for me- I really almost never bail😅 but it just didn‘t feel worth investing anymore time😅😅 7mo
ju.ca.no @TheBookgeekFrau I hope I like this one more! 7mo
dabbe @ju.ca.no I bail a heck of a lot more than I used to. Time is valuable, and there are too many 5-star books out there still waiting to be read. 🤗 7mo
ju.ca.no @dabbe true!! 7mo

"And then the rains came. They came down from the hills and up from the Sound. And it rained a sickness. And it rained an odor. And it rained a murder. And it rained dangers and pale eggs of the beast...Soaking. Spreading. Penetrating. And it rained an omen. And it rained a poison. And it rained a pigment. And it rained a seizure." #Rain #QuotsyMarch18

JewelsEnd So... It rained? Lol. Sorry--for some reason this triggered my smart ass-itis . 6y

#NoteworthyNovember #CultClassic #catchingup

If this book isn‘t a Cult Classic it should be. Brilliantly weird, very fun read. I have a couple more books by Tom Robbins on my shelf waiting to be read. One day!

I felt like Amanda yesterday because I saw a monarch butterfly and almost cried. It's odd and magical how books can sometimes seep into your lived experience and imagination.

Returning to this book, which I started while at Hilton Head Island almost a year ago and so wish I could continue reading at a beach right now. I can almost smell the salty air. *sigh emoji*

Was given this book by a friend who insisted I read Tom Robbins. He said he was embarrassed for me that I have not read any of his work yet.
