Red Rosa
Red Rosa: A Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg | Kate Evans
25 posts | 15 read | 32 to read
A graphic novel of the dramatic life and death of German revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. To Marxs biographer Franz Mehring, no one came as close to the towering intellect of Marx himself. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art. Always opposed to the First World War, when others on the German left were swept up on a tide of nationalism, she was imprisoned and murdered in 1919 fighting for a revolution she knew to be doomed. Red Rosa gives Luxemburg her due as a radical and human being. In this beautifully drawn work of graphic biography, writer and artist Kate Evans has opened up her subjects intellectual world to a new audience, grounding Luxemburgs ideas in the realities of an inspirational and deeply affecting life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

“I want to affect people like a clap of thunder.” In this highly researched & visually appealing graphic biography, we get to know the remarkable Rosa Luxemburg. A Polish Jew with a crippled leg, she was a dynamo who received her PhD in 1897 in Zurich. She devoted her brilliant mind to social activism on behalf of workers. Her revolutionary theory addressed unemployment, lethal working conditions, starvation wages, evictions & more. #comics format

Singout Stacked! I don‘t read a lot of print, but this would be great for #Booked2021 3y
Lindy @Singout I have additional information about this graphic novel: it‘s text-heavy and about half of the text is hand lettered rather than printed in a machine font. The art is really well done and contributes to bringing an amazing historical woman to life. 3y

Clara: I know all mothers fret, but I do wish Kostya would do something with his life.
Rosa: Give him time. I‘m sure he‘ll find his feet. He‘s doing better than our glorious Party leaders. Far better to be a dreamer than to aim to shoot down the dreams of others.

Cathythoughts What .... the poor are too tough , they don‘t feel ??!! Upsetting ,( or is a facetiously said ) 🤷🏼‍♀️I don‘t know 3y
batsy I loved this graphic novel! Look at Rosa's little angry face. 3y
Lindy @Cathythoughts It‘s not said facetiously. It‘s said in total ignorance. 3y
Lindy @batsy Yes, she was a firecracker from childhood onward. 😁 3y

This is what a graphic biography ought to be! There‘s substance, story, and suspense. The art work is first rate. Best of all are the many direct quotes from Rosa Luxemberg herself. Kate Evans uses Luxemberg‘s own words to great effect. I feel like I really got to know the heart and soul of this remarkable woman. She‘s a fully realized person and hero in this little book!!

charl08 Great review - and I agree. Powerful stuff. 4y

This is the "graphic biography" of a person of deep political conviction and passion, living through one of the most turbulent periods in history, and treats its subject with respect, depth and gravity. So it was with some surprise that I found Evans deftly weaving humour and romance into her story. Rosa emerges as a fully rounded person, her faults and inconsistencies shown alongside her humanity and fortitude. ??

Bookwomble Evans packs in a lot of information, both into the main work and into the notes, which to me is a great strength of the book: I read this because I *want* to know! The depiction of Rosa's assassination, and the brutal curtailing of her life and work, moved me to tears. Unequivocally 5🌟 5y
batsy Beautiful review! Glad that you loved it 🌹 5y
Bookwomble @batsy 😊 I think the somewhat defensive tone of my review was influenced by another that I read on another site, which said the reviewer was expecting something lighter 🤷🏻‍♂️ and that they are glad when Rosa was murdered as it meant they had nearly finished! 😡 i know it happened 100 years ago, but Rosa was a real person who died in awful circumstances, and I really wanted to champion the author and Rosa. That aside, it's still 5 🌟😊💗 5y
batsy Oh, I didn't read your review as a defensive one! You put into words how I felt about it. But I totally get your reaction to that other review. Those comments are quite perplexing. Sometimes readers need to be more generous, and have more empathy. Rosa's life was so fraught with danger because she lived her struggle and I can't imagine picking up a book about her wanting something "lighter". (Sorry, now I sound defensive ?) 5y
Bookwomble @batsy I guess neither of us needs to apologise for defending Rosa 💗 5y

So, having congratulated myself at the weekend for downsizing my book collection (a bit!), I'm back on true form as these are today's purchases.
Red Rosa is a biography in sequential art form, which looks fascinating, while the Sayings of Confucius is a beautifully illustrated limited edition published in 1946 on handmade paper. It's in fantastic condition, and I could barely believe it was only £10.

arlenefinnigan I LOVED Red Rosa! 5y
Bookwomble @arlenefinnigan I'll read it soon 😊 5y
batsy Yes, I loved Red Rosa too! Hope you like it. The Confucius book looks so pretty. 5y
Bookwomble @batsy Two good recommendations! I'm looking forward to reading it. The Confucius book is lovely 😊 5y

Rosa Luxemburg was definitely a #rebelgirl who pushed past sexism, physical infirmity, antisemitism, and the prevailing ideology of the day to dream of a better way to exist in this world. Great graphic retelling of her life; highly recommended!

I asked my conservative evangelical mom to buy me this graphic biography for my birthday so I can read it for #ReadHarder superhero comic starring a woman. (I think socialist revolutionary counts as superhero!) She obliged me but accidentally shipped it to herself so I was totally delighted to learn my mom now has socialist literature hidden under her bed. We had a good-natured laugh about it. Does your family buy you books they disagree with?

arlenefinnigan I LOVE that book! My libertarian husband's first Christmas present for me was Fidel Castro's autobiography. Very interesting read but I'm not a fan of Castro. 6y
alisiakae Yes, but I don‘t know if my mom always realizes it, she doesn‘t usually read the book descriptions for the books I put on my wishlist. 😂 6y
alisahar @arlenefinnigan I ended up getting it anyway - can‘t wait to read it! 6y

Drawn and Quarterly is a small bookstore and publisher that focuses on graphic novels. I found this little wonder there. Rosa Luxemburg had quite a life.
