Their Finest Hour And A Half
Their Finest Hour And A Half | Lissa Evans
In 1940, every draft of every film script had to be approved by the Ministry of Information. Cast and crew were waiting to be called up at any moment, travel was restricted and filming was interrupted by regular bombing raids. And so it is that we find a disparate group of characters whose paths would never have crossed in peacetime: Ambrose Hilliard, a washed up old ham from the golden era of silent movies; Catrin Cole, formerly an advertising copywriter drafted in to 'write women' for the Ministry of Information; Edith Beadmore, a wardrobe assistant at Madame Tussauds; and Arthur Frith, peacetime catering manager turned wartime Special Military Advisor. This distinct group find themselves thrown together in the wilds of Norfolk to 'do their bit' on the latest propaganda film - a heart-warming tale of derring do, of two sisters who set out in a leaking old wooden boat to rescue the brave men trapped at Dunkirk. All completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nation's morale is at stake? Newly crowned actor, script-writer, costumier and military attach must swallow their mutual distaste, ill-will and mistrust and unite for the common good, for King and country, and - in one case - for better or worse...

Have I hassled you to read a Lissa Evans book yet?! This is her first, and it‘s more complex than the other two. There are more characters and storylines, and darker darks, so to speak, although still very funny. I loved it (needless to say). There‘s a Singing In The Rain type quality to the film production story, if you need another reason to give it a try.

Because I enjoyed Crooked Heart and Old Baggage (and WW2 home front stories in general,) I ordered this one. Quite good so far, although not as humorous as her others, but the Blitz doesn‘t tend to be if you‘re telling it true.

Suet624 I‘m reading Crooked Heart right now. I know someone on Litsy recommended it, but I can‘t remember who it was! I‘m enjoying it. 6mo
Aimeesue @Suet624 Their finest hour was her first book, and not as good as Crooked Heart or Old Baggage, IMO. This one was her first, and it seems like she hadn't found her voice yet. Still a good read, though! 6mo
Suet624 Thanks for letting me know. 6mo

PurpleyPumpkin @RebelReader So far, so good. The setting is WWII which I tend to enjoy. 😊 2y
RebelReader @PurpleyPumpkin Crooked Heart is set during WWII too which is one of my favorite time periods to read. I loved the characters so much. 😃I will need to check out Finest Hour too. 2y

Spent a good portion of the day trying to catch my dinner. Didn't catch any fish, but we did save a dragon fly, so that was something. Also didn't get to read much, but I've got the rest of the day for that, so. 😃

• I've just been informed that Their Finest is being released for streaming on NowTV which means it will be on DVD soon and I can watch it again and again! This is one of my favourite films ever and ultimately favourite books too. Have you seen this? Or read it? Very late #monthlywrapup for June 2017: it's summer in the West Country so...

4 books finished. 3 fiction, 1 non-fiction. 3 by women, 1 by a man. Good #litsyAtoZ work, but no #readharder2017 ticks.

I found it really hard to get into this book. I have been distracted over the past couple of weeks, my Grandma died, and ever since I have found that I just don't have the attention span for ebooks. I think that the fact that the chapters in this one are over 100 pgs didn't help. The subject matter was interesting!

Zelma I'm sorry about your grandma. I find when I'm stressed or overwhelmed with emotion, I can't concentrate on long books so I rely on graphic novels and comics. 2y
ReadingMeagan @Zelma Thank you 😊 I will have to try out graphic novels and comics. 2y

Added this book to my TBR today... I'd seen the movie trailer (which looks so charming btw) but had no idea it was a book, until I heard about it on my favorite movie podcast..... Now I have to wait to see the movie until I've read the book! 😆

LeeRHarry I saw the movie last weekend and enjoyed it 😊 Bill Nighy was great although when isn't he? 😊 (edited) 3y
KarenUK @LeeRHarry I love him! You're right! He's always wonderful... my favorite is 'Pride'... so lovely! 😍 (edited) 3y
LeeRHarry @KarenUK oh I loved that! My grandpa was a coal miner in South Wales and I bawled my way through that movie 😭 Btw Gemma Arterton does a good Welsh accent which made me happy 😆 3y
KarenUK @LeeRHarry I may have to break my rule and see the movie first... the cast is just so good! 3y

Last night I got to see Bill Nighy live in interview, discussing his new movie, which is an adaptation of this book. Funny and just like he is on screen (he also stole the movie!).

CrowCAH I loved him as Davy Jones in POTC DMC and AWE! 3y

Finished this one up last night. It wasn't what I expected--more poignant and less madcap, but was fun and entertaining. Would recommend, even though Elliott didn't seem enthused. #DogsofLitsy

Lissa Evans, author of Crooked Heart, returns with Their Finest—a smart and funny tale set in WWII London, and soon to be a major motion picture.
