Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation | Bill Nye
"Evolution is one of the most powerful and important ideas ever developed in the history of science. Every question it raises leads to new answers, new discoveries, and new smarter questions. The science of evolution is as expansive as nature itself. It is also the most meaningful creation story that humans have ever found."Bill Nye Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives. In Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, he explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth. With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature worksand to change the world. It might also help you get a date on a Saturday night.

The tone and pacing of this book was enjoyable. Anyone curious about evolution or biology will likely enjoy this one (especially fans of Bill‘s earlier work). #science #nonfiction

I'm admittedly disappointed in the end of Bill's chapter on ethnicity. He seems to be arguing that racism is especially rediculous because ethnicity isn't race. He concludes with "there's no such thing as racism,” without comment on socially constructed racism. I don‘t think it‘s what he was going for, but this dusts off the experiences of people facing racism, seeming to dismiss them. #science #racism #sociology #biology

In this chapter, Bill's talking about people's experience with science education. He describes people as having learned science "in a joyless way." The way he describes this concept makes the motivation behind Bill Nye The Science Guy very clear! #passion #dowhatyoulove #science #scienceeducation #education

I really appreciate how Bill Nye finds a way to make concepts more accessible to those of us who aren‘t as savvy with the technical terms or science behind them. This is was definitely an easier read than his first book, but there were still parts that dragged or I would need to re-read to fully grasp. Hands down though - it‘s important to stay informed and this helps.

@GingerAntics Thank goodness it was italicized because I was about to give up hope 😂 End of chapter 15!

GingerAntics Oh, okay. Sorry, must have already been to the first words of 16 when I looked. I wondered if I should leave the e off. I had it that way first, but wasn‘t sure. Good work, detective!!! 4y
MotionChickness @GingerAntics Lol not your fault, no worries! My library had it on Libby so that would‘ve been my next go to... I didn‘t look at the page but it was like third to last in the chapter... So put that into audio and it‘s basically chapter 16. It was a good exercise on speed reading! I had fun! 4y

I love this book. Approachable, relatable, and funny - Bill Nye, saving the world, in book form.
Especially for Americans who have very little to no knowledge of evolution that has not been filtered through the Judaeo-Christian world view, this book is a wonderful introduction to the topic of Evolution.
(cont‘d in comments).

GingerAntics It was written in 2014, so obviously our knowledge of evolution has evolved in leaps and bounds since then, but you have to start somewhere, so why not start here with every 90s Kid‘s favourite scientist? Love that he had a teacher named Mrs. McGonagall. Love that he studied under Carl Sagan. Bill Nye obviously loves science and is passionate about accurate science education for all. 4y
GingerAntics Yes, Bill Nye is not a “scientist,” but his engineering degree is science heavy (this should not be news to people, seriously), and he has obviously done his homework and regularly talks to scientists to make sure his information is correct. He is a de facto scientist, or better put, he is a scientist in the same way that anyone before the 20th century was a scientist. He studied under Carl Sagan people, he‘s no idiot or scientific simpleton. 4y

MotionChickness You FLEW through this! I still have about 2 hours! Glad you enjoyed it!! Great review ☺️👍🏻 4y
MotionChickness Also... I was beyond jealous that he had a McGonagall for a teacher!! 4y
GingerAntics @Stephuhhnieee Right? When he first said her name I had to rewind to make sure I was hearing correctly. I was so excited. I couldn‘t figure out how to post “OH MY GOD BILL NYE WAS TAUGHT BY MCGONAGALL!!!” 🤣😂🤣 The fact I flew threw the way I did, the fact I refused to do anything else was part of how I knew The Cruel Prince was just not happening for me. So, on to greener pastures, new things to learn, and better books. 4y
MotionChickness @GingerAntics Yessss!! Lol. And I saw that post! That was one of the books I was going to buy tomorrow 😭 I might just get it from the library, first 👀 4y
ravenlee I have a Facebook friend who keeps blasting Bill Nye for not being a scientist, and all I can think is, “he‘s more of a scientist than you are, and yet you know better than he does?” But she thinks evolution in humans can‘t be true because monkeys still exist...trying to remember why we‘re friends in the first place... 4y
GingerAntics @ravenlee 🤦🏼‍♀️ As Bill says in this book, survival of the fittest is a bit misleading, it‘s more survival of the good enough. That‘s why we still have her, she‘s just good enough to keep reproducing. 4y
ravenlee I like that, survival of the good enough. Luckily she hasn‘t reproduced (Trump supporter, so we‘re very lucky). 4y
GingerAntics @ravenlee 😳 dodged a bullet there. It makes sense, if there was some divine creator, why do people need glasses? Why do our joints wear out? Wouldn‘t a divine creator have made our eyes and our bodies to function properly for our life spans? 4y

GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl I don‘t think so. Never heard of that. Bill did mention super powers, but I‘ve only heard of people acquiring super powers through radioactive insects. Most times you have to be born with them. Sorry, nothing new on that front yet. (edited) 4y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics poop! I would use them benevolently I swear! 4y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl of course 😇 4y
julesG Well, guess if you catch the flu your super powers are sweating, snotting, coughing. @Weaponxgirl 4y
Weaponxgirl @julesG hmm, not quite what I was hoping for 4y
GingerAntics @julesG those aren‘t super powers. Those are evolutionary tactics to kill off and expel the virus. Nothing super about it. 4y
julesG I know. I've taught enough virus related stuff for a decade. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG 🤣😂🤣 really? Hopefully you don‘t have to teach about the puking. 4y
julesG @GingerAntics No, it was more about how viruses are used in molecular biotechnology. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG that is so far above my head I just barely know what that means. 4y
julesG Exactly what I thought on some days. 😂😂😂 4y
GingerAntics @julesG wait, but it was your job? How did this work out? 4y
julesG I was only teaching English to science students, specifically molecular biotechnologists. Means, I had to teach them the language, but didn't have to understand the intricacies of how it all works. I understood most of it, but not having studied this subject a few of the things sounded outlandish. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG oh wow. That‘s a trip. I kind of feel that way with some professor‘s instructions at work. “I can tell you what all the words mean, but I can‘t tell you what that sentence means to save my life.” 4y

MotionChickness It is like sitting in biology class again... But with a better teacher! 4y
GingerAntics @Stephuhhnieee my bio teacher was legally blind (and somehow the boys soccer coach) and didn‘t teach much. This is WAY better. Side Note: no wonder I floundered so badly when I suddenly found myself majoring in biology in college. I never had a chance. This book is great. I love it. I‘ve always loved Bill Nye though. 4y
MotionChickness @GingerAntics That is an impressive resume on their behalf 😳 My teacher was the typical science teacher.... GingerAntics @Stephuhhnieee oh I could listen to Bill Nye teach me just about anything. I had a teacher like that for physics. It was great. I loved him. My bio teacher, he just didn‘t teach anything. I didn‘t even realise that nothing had been taught until I got a different teacher in the second semester and had to play catch up. I did enjoy my second teacher. She was good. The first one was horrible. 4y
GingerAntics @Stephuhhnieee it probably didn‘t help that my district literally took a box cutter or razor blade and removed whole sections of the book because they might be offensive or weren‘t Christian. 🙄 Biology wasn‘t taken very seriously by my district. 4y

(Disclaimer: listened to the audiobook). While I was not a fan of the Science Guy's tv show, I enjoyed his reading of his book. The man is "undeniably" a brilliant scientist. He helped me realize something I've always felt inside: while the Bible tells us God created the universe, Science tells us how He did it. Not a book for everyone, and it had its dry technical moments, but overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to his other offerings.

Loved this! I grew up with Bill Nye and I didn't realize how much I had missed it! I can't wait for the show on Friday! He harps against creationism a bit too long though. Thoughts on this qualifying for ReadHarder 2017 tech? He talks a lot about technology. It is my #Litsyatoz letter u. If you like science or Bill, check this out! Fair warning- I don't know if I would have liked it as much if I had read it instead of listening to it.
